I won't return. This studio is in the middle of nowhere. I asked to use the restroom and was told NO. The lady told me that their plumbing is 60 years old. They should at least offer a well maintained porta potty.

I had long enjoyed the botanical prints of Gwen Frostic so was excited to finally have a chance to visit the home and studio. What a disappointment! Walking in, you are hit with a musty mildew smell. And then you look around you. Dirty windows. Dust. The place is slowly deteriorating. It needs some TLC now! Otherwise Gwen's legacy will be gone soon.

This must have been an amazing place at one time. You can see it was. But it is falling into disrepair. One end of it was blocked off and you could see at least one beam broken.
We went into her once fascinating office and you couldn’t even see out the window at the pond she loved so much. The overgrowth blocked everything . The walkways outside were over grown and the railings broken.The whole place smells of mold and mildew. It is so intense I had to leave the office.
Actually the whole place smells of same. I am shocked that in a place that has so much fine paper and so many books and depends on this for income has not one dehumidifier or air purifier. It is actually criminal to allow an artists work to molder away with neglect.
I bought a book of poems and was treated as though it was a hassle to take care of me. Then when I got it home it reeked so much of mildew I am airing it out page by page in the sun with hopes of being able to actually read it without sneezing.
Shame on the owners/board or whomever is responsible for this Michigan treasure because they clearly are letting it decay away. I left this state of affairs with a feeling of sadness and impending loss.

This was the home and studio of the( late) artist, Gwen Frostic. The business has recently been sold and the 11 acre site declared a National Historic one. This, following many years of the place slowly decaying. Visibly. Terribly.
We've visited Gwen's for over 40 years, especially enjoying times when she was working and we cold watch her. This time, we came away feeling very saddened at what we found. The disrepair is evident. None of the presses were running (it was a weekday). But, of course, her work is still lovely because her linotype blocks are still used.
The biggest surprise was the three women behind the counter (there used to be one, and only one). Once they stopped talking to one another about Netflix movies or TV show plots or their social activities and we had their attention, they were incredibly rude. I guess we interrupted their party.
What a shame. An absolute shame. Gwen Frostic was, and is, a Michigan treasure. We didn't find a treasure but lumps of coal.
The business has a website and orders can be placed if its Gwen's work you want. It isn't necessary to actually go there any longer.

Our Michigan friends told us about this artist, Gwen Frostic who has since passed away. This studio is also where she lived. The parking lot was practically empty. The house is very earthy made of stone, wood with a roof that has grass growing on it. A lifelong resident of Michigan, Frostic is known for her naturalist, Linocut block print artwork, created using original Heidelberg Platten presses. We were lucky enough to see the presses in action. The studio is filled with her prints, all very charming with plants, animals, and woodland scenes. The community does a good job of keeping the studio intact especially since many folks these days send emails and texts instead of notecards. It does seem like the color on the cards could be more vibrant. We bought some notecard sets that will definitely be used.

This is a must stop whenever you are traveling to northern Michigan. The shop is easy to get to from US 31 and one can spend several hours. I recommend either visiting or shopping on line as this wonderful historic site is now for sale and if not purchased could possibly close. The shop is full of beautiful gifts made by the Late Gwen Frostic, an icon in Michigan. We will lose a precious part of northern Michigan if not preserved. By purchasing gifts, even on line, it may help to save this must- see site.

First time visiting, this place has a ton of history. Due to COVID-19 a lot of the shop and home side were closed. Wish I had the opportunity to see this place in full operation. Parents have raved about stopping by since they were younger but this recent visit was a little sad to see this gem in such rough shape. Walking up to the entrance it looked more like an abandoned building than a masterpiece that was well taken care of. There was a overwhelming mildew smell once we entered the building with a mask on. I’m still glad I finally got to check this place out and see the history that this place holds. I would go check it out before it’s too late if your headed in that direction.

I really like Gwen Frostic's art. I am pleased that her work continues for others to enjoy. Because of COVID, some areas of the studio are closed and that is understandable. Beautiful nature prints on cards.

This off-the-beaten-path artists hideaway makes paper prints of nature art. What they do to continue Gwen's legacy is excellent, but the diversity is limited. I know they did more at one point because someone I know has a coffee mug of a print of hers, but I didn't see anything like that this time. If you want cool old-fashioned greeting cards or pictures, there is nowhere better.

This place has always been such a gem and a unique, must stop. Now it has become a musty stop - not kept up, junk piled on top of the old presses, employees gabbing on their cell phones. Obviously poor, if any, management. Very sad. Needs an infusion of new energy.
