So very glad I visited the NMA
2021年11月
On our first visit today we thought the NMA was marvellous, predominantly as a place for remembrance, but also for the architecture, sculpture and landscape. We were surprised and moved to see so many very young people some of whom were obviously grieving for those lost in recent conflicts. The NMA was providing a place of beauty and meaning for people to be able to come to grieve and remember. The volunteers added tremendously to our visit by their readiness to help and to give us information. We started our day with the 10.50am visit to the Chapel and the Service of Remembrance which provided an excellent beginning. We then walked around some of the memorials and spent a lot of time at the Armed Services Memorial which we thought has been so cleverly designed, very modern, yet drawing on most probably Stonehenge, ancient Egypt and Classical Greece and Rome to create something incredibly poignant for today. We then had lunch in the Restaurant where we found the food to be ideal for what we wanted. We then had a browse round the shop which we thought was tasteful and sold items suitable for the setting. I bought a guidebook and some cards and chocolates. Time was then passing too quickly and we hadn't seen enough so we decided to book a ride in a buggy with a guide. As it was a short November day this was a brilliant way to see a lot more of the NMA in limited time. After this we felt we would have liked to be here longer so our aim is to visit again. Although the NMA is a place of remembrance we experienced it as somewhere very much "alive" and "of today". Overall we were incredibly impressed and I hope my write up does it some justice but such an emotionally moving place has to be experienced personally so do visit!

Took my mom with me to pay our respects this Armistice Day to members of our family, who as soldiers fell in the First and Second World Wars; lest we forget 🙏

Had always wanted to go and so glad we did. We booked a half day buggy tour and felt like we were royalty. Lovely breakfast before we started and incredible knowledgeable volunteer Sue who took us round. She knew so much about the memorials that we would have never known by just looking. Highly recommend paying to do this.

We visited the arboretum for several hours with family from 6-74 and there was enough to keep us all interested. Beautiful grounds and memorial sans a stick man tour for the kids. Worth the visit and staff were knowledgeable friendly and helpful.

Well worth a visit, for a quiet contemplative walk

Lovely peaceful place, a wonderful place to explore the many memorials to fallen heroes, and so many regiments. I think every part of the armed forces is represented here, together with civilian groups like police forces, the RNLI and others.

The trees are still young, and it will be good to come back again and again over the coming decades to see how the woodland matures.

The restaurant and shop are well served with friendly welcoming staff. And it is free (apart from a small car park charge) to visit.

Brilliant visit - not what l expected, there was so much to see there’s plenty left for another visit.

Visited the arboretum on 4 th Nov 2021. Found this really interesting and moving. So much to see. I had looked at the website in advance and booked a parking spot for £4 and an entrance time. Entrance is free but On arrival we booked a buggy tour at the front desk for £7 per person and l cannot recommend this enough. Our helpful guide Graham had volunteered for the last 9 years and really knew his stuff. He not only talked us through the battles and stories of the squad, boat or soldiers on the mission, he also knew the symbolism and design of the monument or memorial. He really brought the place to life for us, and on the way back we met the head of the Arboretum escorting Capt Tom Moores daughter Hannah around and they both stopped to talk to us which made our day! We would not have had this experience if we just bought a guide book. Thank you Graham. Due to COVID we had the buggy to ourselves and felt safe as there were Perspex screens between the seats.
This is not just a military installation but celebrates and commemorates everything from the ymca to the Boy Scouts! There is a lovely river to walk beside and the central memorial was very special. It has the names of the fallen inscribed and has a doorway to the afterlife specially designed to cast a ray of sunshine on to an alter at exactly 11am on the 11 day of the 11 th month. ( weather permitting). We stayed about 2 hours and had a hot meal and drink in the canteen. ( approx £7-£10 for a hot main course). Clean wash rooms and a great visit.

Exceptional

Our annual visit to the site to take a poppy cross to remember my father who was a prisoner of war in Japan. The whole experience is humbling and I was pleased to see that the Far East building has had a makeover. From reception to the restaurant and on site the staff are exceptional in their attitude to to the visitor, very helpful friendly and eager to help. You can’t find fault with anything. The restaurant provides an excellent array of different food and is of a very high standard at a reasonable price, the staff very knowledgable about food tolerance and allergies. There are some negative reviews but people must remember that because they are disabled and think they should have more consideration they should remember that it attracts more elderly visitors and disabled than most attractions and so they have limited facilities to accommodate all needs, all of the time; they need to remember that they are not the only ones disabled. It is a wonderful place where it gives people a chance to visit somewhere to acknowledge their loss. I think you will have a wonderful visit if you decide to go, take no notice of negative feedback.

Why the Arboretum
2021年7月
We booked a half day tour with our guide Peter who took us around in a golf buggy. Given the area the Arboretum covers, it is a very sensible way to travel.
Peter was informative and knowledgable and the half day flew by with us only managing to visit a third of the the area. (Thats why we would recommend this form of travel no matter how fit or how much you enjoy walking).
The Arboretum is a truly fitting reminder to all from around the world who have and continue to serve their country not only in the armed services but also in the auxiliary services too.
Many of the memorials themselves are works of art which enforces the skill of their makers so make sure that a camera it taken. Remember to ask you guide how and why the Arboretum was formed that is a story in itself. All the staff were friendly and helpful the parking is more than adequate and the refreshments in the restaurant where more than sufficient to sustain any visitor.
We have to return as we feel the need to see and learn more and hopefully will visit again in 2022. It was a really enjoyable and memorable day out.
A fine point is that is you do not want to opt for the golf buggy tour their is a train which takes visitors around and whilst we did not use this facility we did hear people who were getting off the train after using this facility saying how good is was so it is another option. If you like walking that is fine too. If you want to bring a flask and sandwiches there are plenty of areas of seating (shaded and open) where lunch good be enjoyed.
