The reserve is one of the few remaining raised mires (Peat Bogs) in Northern England, and although extensively damaged in earlier years by peat extraction, it is now being restored and provides a unique way to view a rare and endangered habitat.
The reserve lies 1½ north of Bouth and is accessed by a narrow road leaving the village. We visited the reserve as part of a 5½ circular walk starting in Bouth and walking anti clockwise towards the reserve then onwards towards Oxen Park. If looking to visit the reserve by car, we would recommend parking in Bouth and walking because there is no designated parking at the reserve itself.
Although the reserve is on private land, the trust that manages the site has a membership scheme (currently closed) allowing members access to a variety of paths. However the road leading to the reserve is for public access and there is a large lake with a hide for viewing wildlife adjacent to the road as you approach the reserve. The path leading from the interpretation centre (currently closed) is also a public footpath that takes you through Hulleter Moss and Rusland Moss. The walk is mainly on a narrow raised boardwalk unsuitable for small children but provides splendid views across the moss.
We visited in January and the reserve was very quiet but would imagine that walking on a boardwalk in the height of summer could prove quite difficult because the boardwalk for the most part is 2 foot wide with passing points quite spread out. The walk from the entrance to the site exiting in the far corner of Rusland Moss is just over a mile in distance.
