I wish I read the reviews before i booked with them. I was by the boat @ 7:50PM thinking that the boat leaves every 30 minutes. They were like nope nope we moved the ramp. When I questioned the time everyone was like o don’t know what going on I just work here. This line is a joke.

DO NOT USE! Schedule means nothing. “Parking Attendant gave you wrong information. Did you check online?”
Yes I did, and they are not following it even remotely. After almost 2 hours of runaround and misinformation, I am wasting my ticket and paying for another one on Sheplers.

WE WILL NEVER USE OR RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY! We had booked the Pirate Family Cruise a few months ago to experience during our family vacation to Mackinac Island; it was to be the highlight of our trip to Mackinac. Our family had purchased costumes, booked a photographer, and had pirate gifts to give to our 2 small grandchildren (2.5 and 4.5 years old) throughout the week in anticipation of the pirate ship cruise. The littles were very excited since we had talked up the Pirate cruise. We were notified by email 2 days before we departed for our trip that the Pirate Cruise had been cancelled and were encouraged to "exchange our tickets for Fastpass options"; no thanks. Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry was very difficult to reach. They did not return phone calls. When finally reached, they had no explanation why the Pirate cruise was cancelled. It was difficult to get a refund. Star Line definitely didn't follow through on their committ to provide a family friendly experience. Shepler's Ferry has always been tried and true for us! On a positive note, now all 7 of us are ready for Halloween this year!!

Ticketing process is brain dead. We had three families traveling together. Two of the groups were able to get ticket barcodes and skip the ticket booth. The third group, the website offered them "print from phone , print from computer, and will call". Because we were not around a printer, one of the group chose will call, not knowing that the phone option would allow the barcodes to be scanned.
So, all 14 of us had to stand around and wait for a roughly 100 person deep ticket line and miss two boats because your staff at the ticket check couldn't recognize the issue for 5 people in the group and resolve it by generating tickets on the spot. And there is no separate "will call window" at your office despite advertising a will call option that in theory would avoid a line.
It's 2024. There is zero excuse for having to deal with paper tickets as part of an online purchasing system, and zero excuse for the ticket check station to send people back to a 100 person deep line.
The ferry ride itself was fine. The process of getting on the ferry needs some attention.

The trip itself was fine, but the whole experience was somewhat disorganized. We bought our tickets online in advance to save what turned out to be a very small amount of money. Upon arrival, we dropped off our bags at the dock, then parked in the free overnight lot. We were assured that "someone" would call a shuttle to take us back to the dock. After waiting for about 10 minutes in the parking lot, we finally found the lot attendant, who did call the shuttle for us. When we arrived on Mackinac Island, we found that our luggage had not made it onto the ferry with us. We waited about an hour for the next ferry to show up, so we could finally get our bags, take them to our lodging, and get on with our plans for the day. The return trip two days later was more successful -- at least our bags made it onto the ship with us, but the ferry was almost 30 minutes late departing (we were aiming for a 9:45 a.m. departure). Again, there was some confusion about where to board the shuttle to the overnight parking lot. There's definitely room for improvement in the operations.

We have used Star Line numerous times, but on 26 June 2024 we experienced an issue. The boat ride was fine, but when returning to Mackinac City on a very lightly loaded boat, our checked bags did not make it back with us. Another boat came in – still no bags. Another boat came in, and it had one of the four bags our group of two couples had checked. Finally, three boats after the one we crossed on, the other three bags showed up - this only after I had complained and asked the baggage people at Mackinac City to call the island and get our bags onto a boat. Numerous other people waiting with us had the same issue. This cost us a delay of an hour and 40 minutes, and impacted our afternoon vacation plans. The manager I spoke with afterwards said she was sorry to hear that I would not be using Star Line again. (She did not apologize for the delayed bags…) How hard can it be? Bags waiting on the dock?? – Get them onto the boat!

We went to Mackinac Island via the Star Line/Mackinac Island Ferry Co. The ferry to Mackinac Island is a great part of the experience. It can be chilly on top, but we loved the views, especially on our trip to the island that went right under the Mackinac Bridge. In addition to getting to and from the island, you'll get great views of the Grand Hotel, Round Island Lighthouse, Mackinac Bridge and the harbor/marina. The trip is fun, but not too long.
They also provide a valet service if you are staying on the island; they'll bring your luggage to the hotel so you don't have to carry it around while waiting to check in.
We used the offsite parking, which was fine. There is a shuttle that you can use to get to and from the lot.

We have taken Star Line for several years and we have had multiple issues but we gave grace due to changes throughout the pandemic. They no longer have enclosed valet parking but we still gave them time to better their service after they bought out Arnold. This year we still did valet and paid the $50 per day fee. We texted over an hour ahead of our arrival back into Mackinaw City and our car still was not at the dock. It is time to try Sheplers Ferry Service.

This ferry was right next to my hotel the Days Inn by wyndham lakeview which was really nice. Not a long wait to get on the boat and the ride itself was quick. I was able to get nice pictures of the Mackinac Bridge.

Waited forever on the island for the boat, 45 minutes late. Then when arriving back on the mainland waited another 30 minutes for our luggage. Be smart, use the other ferry.

There are discounts if you buy online. Also depending on the hotel you stay at they may offer a discount. The MACpass happens to be the same price online AND at the ferry terminal.

We are planning an October Anniversary Trip, 19th to the 22st. and want to take the Star Line Ferry from St. Ignace. Just a couple of questions that I have not found a definitive answer for on their sight or the other questions and comments.
1) Being at the extreme tail end of the season, 19 - 21 Oct, I assume (yes I know what that means) that I do not have to purchase tickets early and the lines/crowds will not be bad. Am I wrong?
2) I do not mind paying for valet/parking for 3 nights, but is it "Covered" and "Secured" at St. Ignace?

That time of year can still be quite busy. A lot of people will stay in Mackinaw or St. Ignace when they go up north for the fall color tour. Purchasing in advance is always recommended. Neither of the ferry lines have covered parking, in either city. There is no valet parking. They do have staff there, but not sure about overnight. I recommend taking the ferry from Mackinaw City, as the Star Line dock is within walking distance from just about all of the hotels. If going to the island for just the day, it is much easier to leave your car at the hotel and walk to the dock in the morning and walk back from the dock in the evening. Plus, there is much more to do in Mackinaw City than there is in St. Ignace.
