The views are great on the section we hiked but there were no markings. We encountered several forks on the way to Miners Beach and ran into two other hikers that never found the beach. They at least told us which trails not to follow so we chose another. That one started getting a bit dense and did not appear to be well traveled so we headed back. We ended up driving to the beach. Other trails we hiked had nice trail markings but not this one! Knocked off three stars for making us wonder around in the forest. That'll teach 'em!

This portion of the trail was easy and mostly flat. Great views of Lake Superior and the surrounding parks and marinas.

... try the section along the Little Garlic River for a short hike. You can find it about 10-15 minutes up 550 toward Big Bay. Stop at Phil's 550 for some pop or beer on the way back.

This National Trail System goes through downtown Marquette and extends to the east and west into beautiful parts of the Upper Peninsula. Their website has detailed maps and information. There are trails to match all hiking skills. Contact the local chapter to see about small group hikes with leaders if that would suit you.

We hebben een gedeelte van de trail gelopen langs het grootste meer in de Dead River. De paden zijn giet toegankelijk. Lekker op en neer en veel leuke uitzichten. Goede schoenen zijn aan te bevelen.

We hiked section of this trail, from Grand Sable Visitor Center to Miners Castle. Between the visitor center and Benchmark, the trail crosses the road several times, and follows the road for about 0.5 mi. After that the trail winds through the forest, runs parallel to the lakeshore, and crosses several campgrounds. Also there are short trails criss-crossing NCT from parking lots dotted along the UP. In other words, it is never too far from the road, and you will run into day hikers almost constantly. Many campsites are very close to parking areas, making it almost a walk in campsite. For us it was too crowded and did not have much of true backcountry feel. We ran into a group of younger loud people camping at Au Sable with radios and bottles of whiskey. The upside of that is that you don't need to filter water because you can fill up at numerous points. I could see this being a very good playground for those who want to backpack and do backcountry camping. Numerous access points allow easy in, easy out if something goes wrong, or you simply decide it is not for you. Lowney Creek is quite a detour (3 mi) from the NCT trail but what a nice place to camp! The trail is mostly flat and not strenuous, also not all that bad in the rain. We covered that stretch in 3 days, Grand Sable visitor center -> Benchmark ->Lowney Creek ->Miners Castle. It was a lot of hiking, especially on the last day. It was raining cats and dogs, but that equaled to almost no other people, and the last leg had the nicest views.
