Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century CE (year 1250) Sun temple at Konark about 35 kilometres (22 mi) northeast from Puri city on the coastline in Puri district, Odisha, India.[1][2] The temple is attributed to king Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty about 1250 CE.

Dedicated to the Hindu Sun God Surya, what remains of the temple complex has the appearance of a 100-foot (30 m) high chariot with immense wheels and horses, all carved from stone. Once over 200 feet (61 m) high,[1][5] much of the temple is now in ruins, in particular the large shikara tower over the sanctuary; at one time this rose much higher than the mandapa that remains. The structures and elements that have survived are famed for their intricate artwork, iconography, and themes, including erotic kama and mithuna scenes. Also called the Surya Devalaya, it is a classic illustration of the Odisha style of Architecture or Kalinga architecture.
The current temple is attributed to Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, r. 1238–1264 CE– . It is one of the few Hindu temples whose planning and construction records written in Sanskrit in the Odia script have been preserved in the form of palm leaf manuscripts that were discovered in a village in the 1960s and subsequently translated.[62] The temple was sponsored by the king, and its construction was overseen by Siva Samantaraya Mahapatra. It was built near an old Surya temple. The sculpture in the older temple's sanctum was re-consecrated and incorporated into the newer larger temple. This chronology of temple site's evolution is supported by many copper plate inscriptions of the era in which the Konark temple is referred to as the "great cottage".[40]

According to James Harle, the temple as built in the 13th century consisted of two main structures, the dance mandapa and the great temple (deul). The smaller mandapa is the structure that survives; the great deul collapsed sometime in the late 16th century or after. According to Harle, the original temple "must originally have stood to a height of some 225 feet (69 m)", but only parts of its walls and decorative mouldings remain.

Excellent museum put up by IOC there. Along with a small theatre that shows the entire history of Konark. The taxi driver who took us from Puri and back was too good and very knowledgeable and pleasing. Strongly Recommend the visit

Konark Sun temple has great history with mesmerized architecture. This temple is constructed by Eastern Ganga dynasty King Narasimhadeva-1 in the year 1250 AD. Konark houses a massive temple dedicated to the Sun God. Today this temple is maintained and governed by Archeological Survey of India. This temple is located 3 km away from Konark beach, 30 km away from Puri and 60 km away from Bhubaneshwar. This temple is located in the Northeast location to the Puri Jagannath temple.

The name derived from the combination of Sanskrit words Kona which means corner and Arka which means God Sun. so when combines it becomes Sun of Corner. The Sun temple of Konark, the Puri Jagannath temple and the Bhubaneswar Ling raja temple forms triangle in which this temple is one corner that's how it represents the secret beyond this name as it becomes one of the triangle corner which dedicated to the Sun God. This is also called as Odisha's Golden triangle

Chief Architect of this temple is Bishu Mahapatra, This temple is constructed by 1200 artisans within a period of 12 years which is spread across 26 acres. The Konark sun temple is built in the form of a mammoth chariot of that Surya rode. it is said that Surya rode across the sky on his chariot pulled by seven horses. The platform of Konark temple is engraved with 24 wheels of the chariot represents a chariot of the Sun God. 24 curved wheels, each about 3 meters diameter represent the time cycle of today's clock. Konark temple is widely known not only for its architectural greatness but also for the sophistication and abundance of sculptural work.

Interesting Facts about this temple:

1. The Konark is the third link of Odisha's Golden triangle. which was initially built on the sea bank but now the sea has receded and the temple is little away from the beach.
2. Entrance guarded by two huge lions, each killing elephants and beneath the elephant is a man. The lions represent pride, Lions represent wealth and both of the consumes man.
3. Heavy magnet was placed at the temple top and idol was said to have been floating in air due to the arrangement of magnets. The magnet at the top was destroyed by Portuguese novel people as it is disturbing their compasses and they were not able to find their route path.
4. Konark temple platform engraved with twelve pairs of wheels drawn by seven horses evoking its movement across the heavens. the number 24 represents the 24 fortnights in a year and also the 24 hours of the day also 7 horses four on the left and three on the right represents the 7 days of the week and also they represent the 7 components of white light that we know as the VIBGYOR.
5. Konark sun temple has been declared a cultural world heritage site by UNESCO in 1984.

An UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sun temple is dedicated to God Surya. When we visited the temple, there was long queue for entry ticket. We hired a local guide for an hour tour at Rs. 350, who bought the tickets for us. Lots of history associated with this temple, which is nice to learn. The temple has an expansive and clean premise. The temple complex has the appearance of a 100-foot high chariot with immense wheels and horses, all carved from stone. Most part of the temple is now in ruins condition. It is good to see that Archaeological Survey of India is trying hard to maintain and restored the damaged portion of the temple. Entry to temple is closed since long and presently even access to temple stairs is closed to avoid further damage of the temple. The structures and elements that have survived are famous for their intricate artwork, iconography and themes. A must visit to learn the history and witnessing the ancient artwork.

The scale and the beauty of the temple is astounding. The scaffolding ruins it in some places. Get a good guide, ours was not great and so we lost interest in the narration and just went around by ourselves. The temple looks even more beautiful in the evening once the lights come on. Would have loved to see the light and sound show, but it was not running in the last week of Dec.

A must see - This was the tourism highlight of our Odisha trip. We spent three hours and all worth it. The temple is amazing and the carvings are awesome. Our Guide Jayadev was very good - and spoke both hindi and english so all members of our party could understand the details - would strongly recommend him.

A must see place when in Odisha. Lots of history behind the temple, so please take a guide who will explain about the temple and the carvings. The guide would give you a tour for about 2 hours, suggest negotiate and take it for a longer time in case you wish to know more about this temple.
There is also a museum near the ticketing counter, worth seeing it for more explanations about the carvings.
Since it a ruin, no limits on taking photographs. The local photographers could be of help to suggest and take pictures from strategic places, you could hire them (but fix the price in advance, else.......).

Situated on the northeastern corner of Puri, Konark Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the prime tourist attractions of Odisha. Built in the form of a giant rath or chariot of the Sun God, it depicts the chariot being pulled by a set of seven horses, four on the left side and three on the right. It has three deities dedicated to the Sun God on three different sides of the temple which catch the direct rays of sun in the morning, afternoon and evening. There is also a dedicated archaeological museum inside the temple complex. The temple transforms into a stage during The Konark Dance Festival, which is held every year usually in February and attracts a lot of foreign and Indian tourists — dedicated to devotees of the Sun God. Konark Sun Temple is one of the last standing structures before the fifteenth century in the country. The sun rays reach the Nata Mandir from the coast and reflect through the diamond at the centre of the idol. The idol is believed to float mid-air due to arrangements of the magnets at the top of the temple but they were later removed due to the disturbance caused to coastal voyages. An engineering and artistic masterpiece, The Sun Temple has been standing stoically for the last two thousand years. Despite much of the temple in ruin, it still reflects the artistic genius of architects and sculptures of the time.

It is in very bad shape now. I visited this place second time after 7 years. They open the museum. Temple is in very bad shape. There is ticket for museum and temple separately. You need to bargain with Guide for best rates. Beware of person who are selling things.
