It's a nice campground. We love that there is a bike trail connected to it so you can ride into town. The sites are ok size. You can hear the traffic on the road though.

Harassed countless times from park employees. Singled out for children riding bikes in the streets while every single kid in the park is doing the same thing. Camp site unsafe and extremely small. We have a pop up camper and it’s almost impossible to park 10 feet from the permanent fire pit. Right next to a service drive site so half of the site is a drive way which the employees drive threw all day and continued to tell us to move our vehicle over when there is no spot to park at all. I honestly never right reviews or complain about much but had to write something

Last time we stayed here we really enjoyed our site and proximity to bike trail. This time not so good. Seems there is no one who checks for the limit of people/cars per site. There were large groups of people who did not seem to respect the boundaries of the sites. People and children walking right through your site. All this makes for an unenjoyable vacation. Rules need to be enforced and people need to follow campground etiquette

Great location if you’re visiting TC. On a main road but somehow it works. Plus there’s an overpass bridge to walk over to the lake and HOT showers. Wooded setting.

Convenient location to town but really loud -commercial plane airport and truck noise from rd. Staff is terrible..out of ice for 2 weeks, trash on the sites upon arrival and closed down the entire bathroom pavilion by my site (picked bc it was close to bathrooms) for the week with no explanation..although, let’s face it, they are lazy and would require them to clean it during the week at low season 🙄. Would not camp here again.

Go for the overall location as a home base in the Traverse City area and the access to the beach across the street, those are the biggest benefits. It has been upgraded which is nice, and the crew does a good job of maintaining the park. But....if you're looking for a nice, quiet peaceful camping experience it would do you well to look elsewhere. Like many state parks, the sites are quite close together, and this park is almost always at capacity. The road out front of the park is very, very busy and getting in and out is quite risky at most times of the day. Traffic is either gridlocked in the late afternoon, or like the Indy 500.

My rating is overwhelmingly based on the location and the beach. It is a few minutes away from downtown Traverse City and the Old Mission Peninsula, with the Leelanau Peninsula and Sleeping Bear Dunes not far away. The TART ITraverse Area Recreation Trail) allows you to bike to downtown Traverse City or jog or walk on a paved trail. The campground is also pleasantly treed and modestly priced. Noise is a problem, with a busy highway adjacent and an airport 2-3 miles away. There is one vehicular entrance and exit to the park, and turning west as you exit is a challenge as the road you are entering is extremely busy, with traffic moving fast, and no traffic control to help you out.

This urban area has a railroad track running the length of the park in the back. A nearby airport will bring planes overhead once in a while. There are over 400 spots here so there are cars and campers everywhere. We are happy to be here because there is much to do in the area but this is not a park I enjoy hanging out in. It has tremendous shade everywhere and wonderful showers. It was unbelievably quiet for how many people were here. Firewood is six bucks a bundle the Electric hookup was about 20 feet from the camper. We were in spot number 40 which is perfect size for a pop-up camper.

Traverse City State Park is a gem but needs some work. Pro’s - walkway to beach, sites are nice, and staff was friendly. Con’s - no laundry, no sewage or water hookups so you have to run on your own RV tanks, and roadways in campground are too narrow. The bathhouses need cleaned several times a day not just once. They smelled.

Park is great if you like listening to cars and airplanes taking off ALL day even in the back rows. Lots of really uneven lots.
Great bathrooms though, but will never stay again. The traffic sounds were completely annoying.

The state park backs up to the TART trail. So you can do miles of snow shoeing. Just google TART Traverse Area Recreational Trail for maps. Amazing location.

They do fireworks twice. Once on the 4th and once at the end of the Cherry Festival. So it's nice to see the fireworks right downtown, but then it's a good alternative to watch them the 2nd time from the bay across the street from the park. You won't see them as well, but it's a nice environment and other homes and businesses will also be doing fireworks.
