I've driven past this place for the nearly 13 years that I've lived in Waterford, but only stopped in during their Holiday sale in December. It's truly a hidden gem that every resident should visit at least once. There are some very interesting historical facts about Waterford that you learn all while supporting the historical society with any purchases you make in the shops.

Sure, during certain days or weekends they have volunteers who open the little shops and give you info.
Yes, there is a small lake/pond there.
Yep there is a small little park for the kiddos.
But the gem is that this is a super cool place for photos! We've done family photos there twice and it looks like completely different places both times based on the season and what you stand by: the train, the old gas station, the log building, the weathered side of a building with an ice cream ad painted on, or a bench by lake. Enjoy!

This free (donations accepted) trip is perfect for all ages. It is open May-September on Wednesdays from 10:30-2:00. There may be volunteers who dress up and give information about how life used to be and answer questions. I am not sure if they are still doing this. Please call to confirm. There are old fashioned games and chores for kids to try. They really enjoyed playing "Graces" where each player has 2 sticks they use to make a hoop fly to the other player's sticks. They also liked trying out using a washboard and clothespins, stuffing a mattress... On the grounds are 15 old fashioned buildings with self guided tour information set up as they would have been in the early 1900's, including: log cabin, general store, barber shop, hardware store, print shop, carriage house, family outhouse, gas station, bakery, doctor's office, dentist office, millinery, and a train depot with a caboose that is great for pictures. A stream runs alongside it with a gazebo. I've seen people fish in the stream. There is a bench to sit and just enjoy the view. We've brought blankets and picnicked there. Please note that there is not food available for purchase. By the gazebo there is a very large sandbox, a small playhouse, and a wooden children's train for play. This village is a much cheaper alternative to Greenfield Village and may be better for those people who cannot walk as far or whose endurance is shorter. I would plan on about 1 1/2 hours to tour and whatever time you need for a fun picnic lunch.

The park introduces the visitor to a village square made up of modern built buildings that represent turn of the 19th century properties from the local area. When open, the buildings provide for the visitor with some additional information about what went on in each building along with a bit of history of the building and its original location. The rest of the park provides the visitor with a short walking trail over a pond and next to a river.

We did a graduation party here a few years ago - a nice pavilion (needs more electrical outlets), clean restrooms, nice areas for people to walks around, the younger kids played on the caboose (would be great if they added a playground). They also have a small village that opens on Wednesdays with actors and such. And there's the big encampment in late June every year.

The Waterford Historic Village is a pleasant (and free) display of artifacts and reproductions representing life in Waterford Michigan during the early 1900’s. Located on the grounds of Fish Hatchery Park and presented by volunteers from the Waterford Historical Society, the village presents a low-key opportunity for a pleasant exploration of life in the early twentieth century.
Displays include a collection of fifteen buildings that were either moved to the site from other locations or are newer representations of older buildings. Also on the grounds are a 1957 Grand Trunk Railroad caboose, and a reproduction of a steam era railroad water tower.
Highlights include an exact reproduction of a local railroad depot, a log cabin, a one-room schoolhouse, and displays of tools from various occupations. On display are items from a millinery shop, barber shop, doctors and dentists offices, and a country store. There is a “hands-on” area where younger children can experience games and toys from the past.
Since the Waterford Historic Village is an all-volunteer community effort, the operating hours are limited. Currently the museum is open March through mid-December on Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm, so you might want to call first. On other days, visitors are welcome to walk around the buildings and peak in the windows. The surrounding park is a pleasant place to relax when the weather is nice.

The buildings are staffed by volunteers and are usually only open on Wednesdays. You can wander around the outside of the buildings and peek through the windows any time.
