Our experience from scheduling the trip to saying goodbye to our guide and the dogs was an absolute delight. We were in the Lutsen area to ski, but a knee injury erased those plans for us, so we visited the International Wolf Center in Ely. In Ely, we visited the dogsled store, where we learned Paul from Wintergreen might be available for a dogsled tour. We called Paul, who it turns out is the same Paul who joined Will Steeger and others on a dogsled expedition to the North Pole in the 1980's. See the excellent book "North to the Pole" for more.
Our guide Sam was very patient, friendly, kind, knowledgeable, capable and a genuine professional. Sam lives for this occupation, and it shows. She encouraged a hands-on experience--from letting us get to know the dogs before the tour to helping with harnessing and getting the dogs hitched to the sled and the reverse of the entire process when we were done sledding. She was very professional and made sure both the dogs and the two of us were taken care of through the whole run. After the ride, we got to meet Paul, who is very personable and obviously encouraging of people interested in dogsledding.
I'm not licensed veterinarian, but I was impressed at the care and attention the sled dogs received. Sam, Paul, and everyone else at Wintergreen are passionate about their dogs and their clients and it shows. I'd recommend this to anyone and look forward to returning!

This was truly the trip of a lifetime! As newbies to dog sledding, Eric, our guide, was conscientious to our needs and provided the most memorable dog sledding experience ever! Would recommend it highly! We were able to rest when needed (4 of us are far from 'athletic'!), and the scenery is something that will be forever etched in my mind. We had such a beautiful day! The dogs were very well cared for, and certainly LOVED to run! Thank you so much, Paul! We'll be back! Thank you, also to Eric!

We had an amazing experience on our dogsled trip. The guides, the scenery, the trails, the equipment, and of course the dogs made for an amazing experience. Connor and Beau were great guides for our group.

I've always wanted to go dog sledding. Although, my idea was to go for a few hours and say I did it. For my 60th birthday my wife gave me a four day trip to Wintergreen with my son, and I am sure glad she did! From the minute we walked into the cozy lodge, just in time for one of several wonderful meals, to our farewell to our four legged and two legged friends it was a first rate experience. My concerns of being in a shared space with strangers and spending the days in below zero weather were soon put aside. The others who who shared the lodge were friendly and made the experience more enjoyable, and, with the help of our guides, we were very comfortable in the -17 degree weather.
The Wintergreen dogs are amazing! Being, Inuit dogs, they are hard working, beautiful and very gentle with humans. Every morning they greeted us with a group howl as soon as they heard us approach for the morning kennel chores. Helping the guides with kennel chores was a great way to get to know the dogs on your team as well as the many that are not. We had a wonderful canine team lead by McKenzie and Kale, followed by Pippy, Fraser, Chive and our favorite Gabe.
I can't say enough about our guides, Kai and LynnAnne, who made breakfast, lunch over a campfire, served dinner, went out of their way to make sure everyone was comfortable at all times and to instruct us on all aspects of dog sledding.
Paul Schurke, who owns and runs Wintergreen, I found to be humble and fascinating for someone who has been to the North and South Pole, and many other places by dogsled.
Both my son and I had an amazing time and made lifelong memories. Thank you Paul, Kai, LynnAnne and Gabe.

Awesome experience for the Entire Family. We spent Christmas with Wintergreen this year and it was a great Holiday. We had 3 sleds for a family of five and a 5 Star Guide (Brian), The Dogs (Mother Ship - Louisa, Kayuk, Joplin, Tin Can Mike, and Alice -- Lodge Sled - Hedrix, chive, Willow, Bernie & Lena -- Zip Ship - Sisu, Kale & Murdo) were incredible all with very distinct personalities. The kids adored the dogs, and worked hard each day to get the sleds set and ready to go and also unharnessed at the end of the day, this was not an expectation (Brian would have done it all) so I was very proud to see the kids want to work so hard while on vacation.
We did a 4 night excursion and were in the Evergreen Cabin over Christmas, on Christmas Day, we cut a tree and brought it back to the cabin by sled.
Our guide Brian (the big brother my son never had) did a great job with breakfast making sure we were well feed and ready for the day. He was also a pro with the campfire lunch, we never went hungry. Great Variety in the menu's, I have picky kids and they loved everything. Dinners were delivered from the main house, and delivered. Served family style by Brian, everything you could possibly want was taken care of.
The entire operation was run very professionally, the dogs were well cared for and the lodging was incredible, Paul and Susan were great hosts and Brian became part of the family for a few days. Thanks for a great experience and a Holiday that will always be remembered.

Despite my apprehension about sleeping outdoors in single digits on a frozen lake, I would strongly recommend Wintergreens beginners dog sled camping trip in the boundary waters. The scenery was spectacular, dogs are endearing, but prepare to work. You learn to cold weather skills, collecting firewood, digging holes in ice for water, and taking care of the dogs. Our guides Virginia and Brian were the best. They cooked good meals out on the trails, and back at the lodge/cabin the meals were amazing. This trip is good for family's with older children/adult children, groups of friends or even solo. My son and I met good and interesting people in our group. Everyone pitched in to accomplish a wonderful experience. I would also recommend to do the trip a little later in the season as not all the trails were open, and some of the trails in the woods were a bit rugged. I would strongly recommend Wintergreen and enjoy the winter. Ps dont worry about the cold, they suit you up appropriately.

This was one of the most fun vacations we've had in a long time. Mornings we were welcomed to come along and feed and water the dogs. Then after a delicious breakfast we set harnessed our dogs and set out for the most beautiful back country. We dogsledded anywhere from 15 to 20 miles a day. We'd stop for a lunch and for the dogs to rest. We chose the package where we stayed in the lodge in the evenings. The staff was the best! We were taught how to harness and lead our team of dogs. At first they stayed close on cross-country skis, but would give us plenty of space when we were doing well. We crossed frozen lakes and beautiful wooded areas. They have warm clothing for rent if you don't have your own. It was cold outside, but we never got cold. It was fun to have other couples to share with during breaks and in the evenings. The lodge was warm and comfortable. All meals were outstanding. An outstanding vacation.

I planned this trip for my two young children and I. From the very first email response from Paul to my initial inquiry, I knew it would be good. BUT, I didn't know HOW good! Paul, Susan, Jerritt, Mark and Ingrid are some of the most kind people I've ever met. They are welcoming, easygoing and adventurous. I was a bit nervous with how a dogsledding trip would work with one adult and two (somewhat finicky) kids. The Wintergreen staff was accommodating and went above and beyond to make sure we were having the trip of a lifetime. We were able to interact with the dogs as much as we wanted...felt very personable and like a "behind the scenes" benefit. We had such a great time, we decided to do another trip the very next day! It was perfect! Kids and I were well cared for, warm and spoiled by Wintergreen! Just wonderful! We will go every year:)

Dear Sue and Paul,
I visited you recently with the MN Zoo group. I wanted to give you both a
huge thank you for the absolutely amazing experience we had with you and
your sled dogs. My mom was the one in our group that chose not to go, but
even still, you were so accommodating by allowing her to ride with Paul to
the mid-point of our trip to take pictures. She also loved receiving a tour
of the lodge and talking to both of you about your lives. My brother and I
had a blast dog-sledding. We were sled 6, which meant at the end of our
trip, our guide took us off the trail a bit early and allowed us to help him
take our team of dogs off their lines, bring them back to their kennels, and
gave us time to pet them and thank them for their hard work. It was
amazing! I love how well you care for your dogs, that you allow them all to
retire on the property with you, and that you tack all their names on the
shed near the kennels. They are amazing animals and deserve to be loved and
appreciated for their dedication to you and those that come to visit. I am
so thankful for this experience and am so glad to have met you.

I'm a California girl, not accustomed to cold weather. The idea of camping for three nights on a frozen lake in MN was intimidating at best, but I ended up having the most fun I've ever had. The dogs are amazing, the guides incredible, and the whole experience unlike any other. It is just magical to be pulled by dogs! We were there for New Year's Eve on our last night and got to hear Paul Schurke, master storyteller, relate some of his adventures. I can't recommend Wintergreen Dog Sledding enough!
