Easy walks from the main parking area for nice views of the Mississippi River area. Lots of picnic spots.

Great Hiking on the Bluffside Trail
2021年5月 • 独自旅游
Great hiking on the Bluffside Trail with beautiful views of the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin further south. There is a upper and lower bluff trail and hiking both in a clockwise fashion involves descending and later ascending steep wooden and rock stairs. The upper trail offer spectacular views from high above the river but the lower trail provides access to the banks of the Mississippi at one point.

Nice but could easily be better

Camper cabin was clean. Needed some maintenance. Door was falling off hinges. Had to use state certified firewood but the wood was always locked up and unavailable. Was a 1/2 mile hike to a so so beach.

Superb Views of the Mississippi River
The Frontenac State Park is situated a leisurely hour drive mostly along the Mississippi River from the Twin Cities. The park has a nice picnic area with benches and a fantastic view of a winding Mississippi River. There were a few trails which would have lead to the river but we were too tired to check out the trails on the day we visited the park. But sitting on the picnic benches overlooking the giant river was indeed a relaxing way to spend an evening. The view is simply fantastic, with lot of lush green trees adorning either banks of the river. There are some camping sites available here as well. This park is also famous as a spot for bird watching, including bald eagles. There is a $7 charge for a day pass but it is totally worth it to spend a few hours at the Frontenac State Park!

Not for us
We were excited to check out this park. We pulled into the parking lot expecting to be able to easily find the trail we were looking for like we have at similar places. We were wrong. I read through these reviews and thought we'd be able to drive up and find what we had come for, but that just wasn't the case. The signs we saw didn't match what the site said and the map didn't help at all. We were so frustrated we ended up turning around and leaving.

Short tour

Went to the parking lot and checked out the short trail with the lookouts along the bluffs. Was busy Labor Day weekend but was able to stay apart for the most part. Beautiful park would like to explore more next time with older kids. Steep steps and sharp drop offs.

Great views of the Mississippi River
This was our first state park in our quest to visit the Minnesota State Parks. The drive down from the Twin Cities was nice. I have always enjoyed the Lake Pepin area. The view from the picnic area was gorgeous. There was a wedding happening when we were there. We attempted to do one of the bluff trails but our four year old was a little eager and we were a little wary of her doing the trail we didn't complete the loop. It can get kind of steep at times. Next time we'll try the interpretive trail which is pretty short. This park will be very beautiful in the fall.

Pretty drive
2020年8月 • 家庭
First time camping in over 10 years, and first time with our young children. We got lucky and caught a cancellation over the upcoming weekend. We got a cart in site (5). It was a very pretty drive down from the cities. The park is nice with different elevations with lots of marked trails. The parking for cart in was about a half mile walk to the camp spots. The carts they provide are study and clean. The trail in is a mix of level grass and gravel with an incline. Our tent camping spot had a box to store items, a picnic table and fire pit. We had a tree that offered shade but not a hammock area. Near us, but not too near, was a vault toilet (more roomy port-o-potty that looks like a shack, no running water). You could hear other campers. From our tent, we could see another tent higher on the hill (not a cart in tent area). We tried walking our 3 and 4 year old down trail F to get to Lake Pepin. It got too challenging for them and we had to loop back to our tent area on N-H-I. Still the route was a nice mix of stairs, thin and wide paths. You could see limestone walls. They said no swimming in their park for unsafe swimming conditions.

Skip the backpacking sites and go for cart-in!
Skip the backpacking sites and go straight for the cart-in sites! The backpacking sites are both right on a busy trail and directly across from a busier highway and an active railroad that must have a crossing/station right near Frontenac because they sound their horns coming and going. To make matters worse, the only thing separating the railroad/highway from the backpacking sites is a lake, so the sound really carries. That said, the park itself is beautiful and the hiking is great!! The cart-in sites looked awesome and private and quiet so if you're looking to carry in, just book one of those. Also, if you do want to book a backpacking site, they leave bundles of firewood at the sites, which we didn't know and only learned after hauling some in. So, a solid A for the park in general, but give the backpacking sites a hard pass.

Awesome Views and Hiking Trails
2020年5月 • 家庭
First time to Frontenac and absolutely loved it. The hiking trails are fantastic and marked well. They offer some nice changes in elevation allowing for access to Lake Pepin and the steep bluffs above. Also some cool trails and camping sites on the non lake facing side of the park. Very cool rock formation with Native American historical reference. This is a must for people in the area that like a good hike. Bluff loop maybe 3 miles at most.
