I've driven by Hinckley for years and I finally had time to stop by and visit this small, yet thorough museum.
Growing up in Minnesota I'd read about the devastating 1894 inferno that killed more than 400 people. That toll would have been much higher if it weren't for the heroic actions of two train crews.
The word "hero" is used loosely these days. The museum tells a compelling story about how these train crew literally drove though a firestorm saving hundreds of people at great personal risk and barely making it out alive.
There is a 15 minute video that provides an excellent overview of what happened and there are relics from the fire such as a partially-burned bible. There are also newspaper front pages published a day or so afterward. Upstairs in the former depot is the apartment of the former manager.
It's worth an hour of your time.

I read the book "Under a Flaming Sky" and wanted to see where the fire happened and learn more. There is a 20 minute movie and a lot of displays that helped to make the information from the book become more "real". The staff was friendly and happy. Reading about the fire prior to visiting the museum was beneficial. 5 bucks to get it and I spent about 1.5 hours there. I was there in September, so not much traffic in Hinckley. There was plenty of free parking and it was easy to find.

Very interesting piece of Minnesota history. Very informative and we'll put together. Went with my family and we all learned about what made the town what it is.

A stop at the Hinckley Fire Museum is well worth your time. A film and knowledgable guide gives visitors the story of devastation in 1894 as a fire swept through 200,000 acres, killing over 400 officially. Many more died but were not counted with the overwhelming number of deaths. The museum has many artifacts. The upper level is open to view the huge living quarters where the station master lived.

Very friendly and informative volunteer staff. Interesting video and several books about the fire. We would probably stop there again.

This town is only 1400 population & the major draw is the casino west of town. A significant event in Minnesota history is covered completely & in great detail at this downtown museum. Many artifacts, heat short video, many 1st person stories & a very large diorama of the 1893 town... right down to the backyard outhouses & clothes lines. A very nice gift shop too. Outside exhibit of steam engine & reconstruction housing. A must see if in this area. I'm coming back in August to spend more time here.

The fire museum is a must if you are in the area, it tells the story of the fire and the stories of some of the people. There is a short film that gives a great overview along with the rebuilt station with a ladies waiting room and the Beamer.
If you are able, the climb up the stairs(no elevator) to see the sample living area is absolutely amazing!
Lots to see and the displays are very well done. Would definitely recommend a stop. We were on site about 2 hrs but you can definitely spend more time.

Geat MN history! Every Minnesotan should visit this museum!! The staff were very friendly and the pictures and artifacts from the fire really made history come alive. We must never forget this tragic tale of MN logging history-our children need to know the story, lest we forget those brave souls who were lost and those whose bravery helped many escape.

We had a person that was very knowledgeable about the history of the Hinckley fire. She showed us two videos of what had happened on September 1st 1894. It was very informative a must see if you are in Hinckley Mn.

The first thing we did is stop at the Fire Museum...I have been here before but the other 3 in our party had not. They made some wonderful improvements and we ended up spending about 1 1/2 hours there. The gentleman working was VERY informative and answered our questions...he also put the movie on for us at our convenience since we were the only ones there at that time.
