We started the Hiking Club with this park on March 17, 2022. It's a beautiful park. The bison were right by the park office. The trail is very open and the views are amazing. Saw pheasant, grouse, and geese.

Impressive state park. The huge quartz rocks inside the Bur Oak Forest and the huge quartz quarry were awesome sights. I highly welcome the Bur Oak hiking trail; where you can see both sights.

We did several things here that we can share.

We stayed at the campground with our camper. They are electric sites only. It runs along 20, but it isn't a super busy highway. To avoid any noise, you should stay on the far end of the loops. We stayed down toward the entrance and had what appeared to be a brand new showerhouse. The only bugs were some flies that visited at meal times. The sites aren't huge, but roomy enough for a screen tent and picnic table, ground mat and a grassy area. We stayed during the week and there were only a handful of other campers. It is a really nice campground. And we would definitely stay again.

There is an entrance fee to go into the park. You can pay it online by following the directions posted at entry points. Leave your confirmation number on the dash of your vehicle.

We used the map to plan out a hike and merged two together. Most of the routes are similar, over dirt paths through prairie with prickly pear cactus and Sioux Quartzite. Whichever paths you choose, be sure to see the quarry (it is beautiful and made of the pink rock), Eagle Rock, and the path of the rock that runs east to west at the south side of the upper cliffline trail. If you take the upper cliffline trail to the quarry, be aware that it is a very dangerous cliff for little people to come up to without an adult close and the rocks are very slippery when they are wet.

By the tipi/tent campsite there is a nature play area that consists of the Sioux Quartzite that is kids sized climbable. To access it, walk along the cement path that is to the left of the parking lot facing away from the swing set.

There is also a bicycle repair station with a rack and tools in the corner of the parking lot.

The buffalo can be viewed during hikes and from viewing areas, we only caught glimpses at a distance. We would have liked getting to do a tour, but they haven't been started back up again from COVID closures.

This state park is huge and has several different access points. It is located only a few miles from the city of Luverne. There is not much shade at this park and many of the trails are in the prairie so pack sunscreen! There were some very cool cliffs on the Upper Cliffline Trail. Some of the trails are pretty long so plan for plenty of time. I would return here again!

We unfortunately were here on a cloudy, drizzly day but we were able to see the Bison. They have two spots to view the bison that requires just a small walk. They have directions on where to find them which was really nice. It was a cool place to hike and explore with kids.

Came to park in March because the weather was beautiful for Minnesota. Did the loop hike up to the bison range on the Mound Trail. Bison were pretty far away but we had binoculars. You can see for miles. There is an incline. There are park maps at intersections so that was helpful. Had lunch then did the Mound Creek trail. There are NO trail maps anywhere on that trail. I just don't get it. Yes, I have the paper map. By the time we got over to the camp sites you have no direction and walk through the camp ground. The trail head is NOT marked so if you wanted to start there you would have no idea. Just get frustrated for "non-locals" who have never been to the park have any direction. Doing both trails was about 7 miles. It was a good hike. Ranger was there and there were other people on a nice day.

I visited on a cold winter day and no one was in the park. Had the bison all to myself. They are close so be very careful

Favorite part of Blue Mounds was hiking and watching the Buffalo. During 2019 I was at the park on four separate occasions. Walked the south end of the hiking trail in November and loved the view from Egale Rock at an elevation of 1740 feet.
In December with snow on the ground I returned and walked the rest of the trail.
One bit of advice while walking along the cliff do not walk towards the cliff while looking at your cell phone as there are no markers warning proximity to the cliff.
All in all had a great time.

Nice spot for geocache. Binoculars on bison viewing station don’t work. Beautiful scenery. Would like to visit again when everything is open.

The park is full of invasive weeds and it appears that nothing is done to stop them from spreading. The grassland needs to be burned and reseeded with native grasses and flowers which it currently lacks. I will never go back. I believe the state should either sell the park land or spend the money and maintain it. It cannot exist in its current state.
