It wasn't for me

I didn't really enjoy this small museum, I didn't care for the current exhibit. However, the gift shop was the best part of the whole thing, it was wonderful and had lots of nice things.

Interesting museum

Small museum but unique. Its a small private collection that showed a lot of Soviet art. We really enjoyed it. Only half of the exhibits were open when we went so we were charged half price. We will have to go back when it back up. There was parking across the street that is shared with the church. There are lots of stairs but there is an elevator as well. It only took about an hour to go through the open exhibits.

Surprised by how much we enjoyed this museum!

We visited on a Monday after visiting town for a Vikings game and were surprised by this gem of a Museum! It was the only one open on a Monday so we thought we would give it a shot. We learned a lot about Soviet history and there was a very interesting exhibit about the Soviet approved non-religious winter celebrations.

Small Museum with Great Range of Art

I teach Russian, so a stop at this museum was a must when we visited St. Paul. It has a great collection of Russian art for the size of the museum. The art itself spanned a wide range from anti-war cartoons done very recently to a collection of old tools and soviet era posters. I loved the collection of nesting dolls and appreciate that they allow practical things (the spinning equipment, the samovars) to fall under the category of art - as many times, folk art is overlooked. It's a great overview of Russian art of multiple styles and eras, well worth the time.

A wonderful small museum in a very interesting building

Based on a private collection, this museum mostly shows late-Soviet and post-Soviet art, with some historical pieces. Currently they also have an exhibit of Ukrainian and Russian cartoons about the Russian invasion. The cartoons were both funny poignant.

A Less Discovered Minneapolis Treasure

Recently,I returned to Minneapolis and I spent three hours enjoying the Museum of Russian Art.I saw fine paintings from the permanent collection by these 20th Century Russian Painters;Mikhailo Khmelko("Motherland Greets A Hero"),Stanislaus Kreiz("On Native Shores"),Akhmed Kitaev("Among The Birch Trees"),Dmitri Kantorov("Falling Icarus"),and Valery Yershov("Gorbachev").I enjoyed the paintings of these Russian painters realizing their creativity was somewhat suppressed.
I saw impressive Contemporary Russian Art temporarily on display by Lenoid Sukov("Lenin and Giacometti"),Natalia Nesterova("Pastries"),and Ludmila Belova("Pastorale"),among others.
There also was a fine exhibit of photography depicting Americans living and working in Siberia.
in short,the Museum of Russian Art is a less discovered treasure in the Twin Cities.

A small unique museum

The museum is small, but very unique, the art here is very different from all the art museums I have been to. We spent about 2 hours here.
We bought chocolate and chocolate wine candy from the gift store, they were just expired. I talked to the girl worked the counter, she couldn't find any of these with a different expiration date, so we just bought those.

Very unique!

It's worth visiting this museum for the building alone! Their exhibits mostly come from private collections and change regularly, so it's worth coming back every couple months. The gift shop is also really worth looking at!

Unexpected Art

One of the highlights of this museum is the building itself. An old church has been renovated to house a lovely, but small, collection of Russian art. Although most of the art is neither famous nor highly distinguished, make sure you visit the basement with monumental canvases that are breathtaking.

Small and limited focus museum

TMORA says it has 7,000 items in its collection, but only about 200 are on display in this small museum located in a repurposed church (which seemed appropriate for a collection heavy on the art of the viciously atheist Soviet Union). The small size does allow visitors to take their time, as the displayed collection can be viewed fully in an hour or two, and as the display is regularly rotated with a focus on new acquisitions, there would be reason to return. But this is not a comprehensive art museum. All of the art from the permanent collection was from the Soviet era, the most interesting of which focused on Socialist Realism. A collection of hand-made dolls was also impressive. But a temporary exhibit on a Russian artist who emigrated to America and became famous for his advertising art seemed rather tangential to the theme of the Museum.
