My husband and I went here for a picnic and a walk. There are a lot of benches now so even when it's busy you can find a place to sit. And it was really busy! The adults were good about distancing but the families with kids were awful. It was very hard to get away from the children and the garden was overrun by the time we left. There are signs all over the area about social distancing but some people never have to be considerate of others!
All the same, the garden was gorgeous. I think we saw it at the Spring blooming peak. I remember very clearly when the garden was started, we were actually quite upset at the mess that was being made out of the area. Over the last few years it has been very well-tended, and there were gardeners on-site when we were there. The care shows. There were years when it looked pretty scruffy, but now it is well worth seeing.
There is a lot of lawn area near the rock garden for picnics too. We saw a lot of adults with pizza boxes out on the lawn having lunch, and that was fine.
Unfortunately there are now a lot of people who put up hammocks in the trees and that cuts off access to parts of the park and the plants. We saw a lot of camping out going on. I know we saw signs in the area that hammocks are not allowed but they were being ignored. It's too bad to because it really trashes up the area. I was able to get some photos before a lot of the people got there.
Go early in the day, earlier morning preferably.

This park within Minneapolis is moderately sized, but offers pleasant viewing. Take time to meander the trails and soak in some nice views of flowers, shrubs, trees, and rocks. The gardeners here do a nice job, and you will likely come away with a nice appreciation for what nature has to offer.

What a relaxing walk through a variety of flowers, rocks, pond, fountain spread out in this park to provide a peaceful environment to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Well I've lived here all my life and had never visited this garden. Boy wish I would have visited sooner. This place is incredible. Clean quiet good for the soul! Don't wait like I did. Easy to do serene interesting sculpture. Great place to relax and gather your thoughts or meditate

It was a bit underwhelming once I visited it. Rock garden seems uninspired. Lots of lush lawns but not much character or design to the space. We quickly went to Lake Harriet scenic by way and did the 3 mile walk around it instead.

I didn't know that this was here until I moved in near Lake Harriet a couple years ago but I recommend not missing the peace garden when you visit the rose garden or see the art car parade. What could be better than the combo day of bandshell, hammock reading, walking by the lake, the rose garden and then the peace garden in summer?
Maybe adding some tempura cheese curds but still. Minneapolis in the summer must be squeezed of every drop of beauty and this adorable Japanese garden is one to hit up at least once. It's not the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum but it is never very busy, it is calm and lovely and it is in your backyard.

This is the location that my daughter and her group choose to take the pictures before one of their formal high school dances.
It is a peaceful spot with some paved walking trails, a small bridge and a parking lot. There was only a porta potty for facilities.
The flowers and grounds were beautiful. Worth a quick stop.

This is always a great choice of public parkspace to spend some time. Although it may not be a huge space...it is a truly lovely one. This visit was a Wednesday morning in late July. The park was nowhere near crowded...quite peaceful...as the name implies. =] There were several volunteers cheerfully working away on some of the locations. The grounds are always extremely well-maintained and inviting. The best part is the actual flora and fauna. It is so refreshing to see such a variety of Japanese trees/shrubs/flowers. Some of the trees are gigantic...reaching high into the sky. While visiting...you do feel transported to a faraway place. A lovely and calming waterfall area is in the center...my little ones enjoyed tossing some small rocks into the pool. Another fantastic feature of this park is its location. Right across the street is the Lyndale Park [Lake Harriet] Rose Garden. Both parks are free and parking in the adjacent lot is a mere $.75/hour-unattended/Honor System. The parking area is small...but it seems doubtful that it is ever much of an issue. I believe I also saw public restrooms in the parking area. These gardens are part of the Lake Harriet public park area...which offers many family-friendly things to do. We'll always gladly return to this area!

This is one of the nice features on the north side of Lake Harriet. Keep in mind it's a rock garden (plants that tend to like cool weather), so much of it blooms in the spring. It's still nice in the summer, and you can cross the street to the rose garden if you want to see masses of blooming flowers, but sometime around April or May is often the best time for the rock garden (depends on when spring arrives, of course).
If you have time, the bird sanctuary is a very nice walk, and in the spring I've seen lots of birds from the seating area near the rock garden.
