We had the chance to drive up to Heritage House and walk the grounds during our recent visit to Rochester. Unfortunately, the house itself was not open for public view. I understand that it is quite remarkable inside and serves as an excellent party venue.

A nice short walk from the Mayo Clinic this historic property is worth a tour if they are open and a walk by if it isn't open.

We came to Rochester just to see this house. It was the 150th year of this home of Timothy and Eliza Jane Whiting - and it was well worth the journey. The house is well kept and filled with period antiques and furnishings. The docents are well trained and full of wonderful information about the house, the family and the items contained within the rooms. My great-great-grandparents would be tickled that their home was still well-loved.

Nice tour of a Victorian style home. The guide was excellent. She was 80 years old and knew her stuff. Answered my questions and brought in a lot of information.

This house originally belonged to an upper middle class family in Rochester and the home (barely) survived the big tornado that ultimately resulted in the formation of the Mayo clinic. The house has now been restored with all kinds of donated items true to the Victorian era, some of which were original with the family, but most donated from other sources. They even have a replica of the Lincoln bed in the White House and the entry piece from the office of the Mayo brothers.
The tour takes about 20-30 minutes and I was immediately greeted by the knowledgeable docent who took me on a personal tour of the entire house, explaining all the features of each room, the period clothing on display, furniture, wallpaper, carpets, embellishments, while elaborating on the uses for each to the residents. I must say I now have a general understanding of the Victorian style that I lacked previously.
They are only open on selected days of the week for a few hours, but if you'd like something interesting and inexpensive, I recommend you go.

Heritage House is located directly behind the Methodist Hospital....behind the old Warrell building....first Methodist Hospital, directly behind the emergency entrance at the Methodist. The Heritage is located in Central Park....takes you on a journey back in time in the Old House....vintage props and all. The Park is the start of parades in town, and the center for many concerts held by all ages...especailly young people...all free.

I love seeing communities preserve their history, and this little house gives you a glimpse right into the lives of a typical Victorian family. The docents were so very sweet and knowledgeable, I could have stayed much longer just chatting, but there were other people needing tours. I got a laugh out of how many things in the kitchen were actually familiar to me - I grew up in the country with old-fashioned parents, and my mom (84) still uses some of those utensils. If you like history, make time for a side trip to this lovely little downtown park and well-restored home.

We recently toured the Heritage House in Rochester MN, and enjoyed every minute. The rich collection of 19th century artifacts are attractively and thoughtfully arranged providing a detailed view of life 100 - 150 years ago. The docents really know the details about the collection, from the corn-on-the-cob shaped cornbread baking pans, to the fainting couches, from the lace loom to the design of the furniture, and tie their knowledge to the history of Rochester. Fascinating! If in Rochester, a must-see!
