The Landing a true gem in Minnesota! We go several times a year, and each time we feel enriched by the experience. Many Minnesotans may remember The Landing as “Murphy’s Landing” and probably even went there for a field trip in elementary school. It is now owned by the Three Rivers Park District, thus the name change. While tours are no longer regularly offered, the grounds are free to wander all year, and many paid events, including tours, are offered via the website. Folkways of the Holidays during Christmastime is one of the most popular events. For non-event days, the buildings are all closed, but guests are invited to take a self-guided tour and read the informational placards outside many of the buildings. In addition each month different objects (such as an apple in September) are hidden in the buildings, and guests are encouraged to peer through the windows to find them while also getting a glimpse of the furnishings inside.

Visitors will start in the “Eagle Creek Village” representing a 19th century town. There are so many unique and historic buildings in this part alone including a church, town hall, general store, and many different family homes. On a quiet afternoon you can sit in the gazebo, look around and really feel like you’ve been transported back in time-it’s one of my favorite things! The village is also the most guest-friendly area with modern bathrooms in a temperature-controlled building (made to look like a barn.) Here you will also get beautiful views of the Minnesota River.

If all you do is walk around the Eagle Creek Village, it’s worth your visit, but there is also so much more to explore. A short walk down a dirt road will lead you past the ruins of the old Murphy’s Inn and to the 1889 Farm. Here you will see a farmhouse, barn, and sheep and cows graze the pastures from May-November. The schoolhouse is also located near this farm.

Next up is the 1857 homestead. This has a house and many outpost buildings as well as pigs. It’s a great way to see a self-sustaining farm, and appreciate all the work early immigrants to Minnesota put into building a life here.

The last stop is the 1845 Fur Trade Post. It’s a great example of early architecture in the area and Minnesota’s history with the fur trade. Near The Landing is Memorial Park where there are Native American burial mounds. While the heritage park highlights immigration and European settlements, it’s important to remember the area was used by Native Americans first.

Overall The Landing is a wealth of historical information and buildings. Unfortunately over the years we’ve noticed a decline in events offered, maintained buildings, and social media presence from this heritage park which leads me to believe it may be struggling with funding. Going to paid events or making a donation are some ways to help ensure The Landing continues into the future!

Some visitor tips: For little kids there is quite a bit of walking (1-2 miles) so you may want a stroller. An apiary for honey bees is on the outskirts of the village (close to the ruins.) While the bees aren’t aggressive, it’s something to note if someone in your group has a bee allergy.
Bring your camera there are lots of good photo opportunities here!

Average trip. We arrived at approximately 3 pm and made our way towards the entrance of the park. There were multiple old historical houses on display, with informational plaques located alongside some of them. The informational plaques detailed the history of the house and what it may have been used for. I was very disappointed that we could not enter and go inside any of the buildings. I felt like that took away from the excitement of this activity. We did peer into the windows of some of the buildings, but I would have loved to go inside to truly experience what it might have felt like to live there. Also, some of the buildings didn’t have any plaques in front of them, so it was hard to tell what the building might have been used for. There were also several animals out for display, such as pigs, chickens, and several beehives. There were clean restrooms available for use, along with a walkway with views of the water.

Tip: I recommend spending an hour here if you truly want to see everything.

It was very interesting to see real buildings from the past so well maintained. There were houses, school, church and different business. You can watch the inside but not able to go inside.

Really cool but would love to see it when it was alive with staff. We went in the middle of the week during the pandemic and had the place to ourselves. Got to see all the buildings and peer in the windows. Everything is well preserved and they are adding new buildings. Would love to go back and hear the stories.

The Landing is a great place to visit in December when the houses are open and decorated for the period and season. We started years ago by taking oldest grandson and as the younger ones got old enough (4 years old) they joined us. One year we said we weren’t going to go back that year and the kids protested saying they loved going there and they learned something new every year, which is what we hoped they would say.
People in period costumes are in each house and they explain what is is like to live on the German farm, for example, In 1910. You walk along a road and go into the 20 or so historic houses. I think we usually spent 3 -3 1/2 hours there, asked a lot of questions and take a horse drawn trolly ride back to the entrance.
This visit is always the first weekend In December and we continue to return.
Dress warm and for the outdoor walk. The houses are heated as they would’ve been during the period they represent... most are cool inside but not cold.

We had great family time! We had ages 4-61 together for the day. The costumed interpreters were well informed. They were cooking and showing holiday crafts to the guests. The best interpreters gave information about the house and traditions, but kept it limited so that the kids didn't get bored. The kids loved getting involved in helping to creating holiday crafts. One of the biggest hits were the school house and the outdooe sleds.

It's been a few years since we've been there but definitely worth the stop if you like to look into MN's past, especially more rural MN. My father actually attended a one room schoolhouse so it was good to see it and imagine what his early years of school were like. Not as well known as Old World Wisconsin but somewhat comparable.

We went to Murphy's Landing today for their Maple Sugar tour. They had a horse drawn Carriage ride to the maple sugar site. Afterwards, they had several houses open and people teaching us how life was in their time period. We took our four kids ranging from 6-12.......they ALL loved it! I highly recommend going. We will be back in the summer, but even before then.......worth your while!!!

Going to Murphy's Landing is link traveling back in time to where the settlers lived and work . Even the kids had things to work and do chores to help the family
