I understand the mine tours were cancelled in 2024 because of flooding. We did this in 2022 and found it extremely fun and educational. You take an old style elevator down...down.. down to 2341 feet below the surface 689 below sea level. Then you take a mining train-like with seats. And walk and see and learn what miners dealt with, and you can learn a bit of geology, hydrology, and the thought that went into mining. There is also self guided tour of equipment/buildings, you can see some of the open mine, learn about the safety and community that was unique to this mine.

Was a great tour! Even though we just took the surface tour it was extremely informative and our tour guide Karl was amazing. Personable, knowledgeable and interactive! Did a remarkable job remembering everybody’s names too.

The Lake Vermillion Soudan Underground Mine State Park far exceeded our expectations. The underground part was a no-go after a relentless rain flooded the mine. Went on the above ground tour and were amazed at how our guide brought mining to life. Beautiful setting.

While we were not able to view the mine due to flooding, the outside is well worth the time all by itself. There are staff who tell you about the equipment and how it was used, most were minors in other areas and well versed in the information. Very cool stop.

Although our underground mine tour had been cancelled due to flooding (no tours in 2024), our above-ground tour more than compensated. Pete, a guide for 25 years, a former miner himself (albeit at a different mine), and the son, grandson, and son-in-law of miners, gave an amazing tour. I have no idea how long the tour was supposed to last, but ours lasted 2-1/2 hours! There were just four of us - my hubby and I plus another couple.
Pete held our attention with a mesmerizing delivery tinged with humor. He pulled information from his first-hand and life experiences that provided such a complete picture of the history and operation of the mine and the life of a miner.
If you go, you’ll enjoy a real treat if you’re lucky enough to have Pete as your guide. You’ll learn so much and have fun doing so.

We had done the underground tour a couple of times in the past. While traveling this September with 3 other couples who had not done the tour, we decided stop at the Soudan mine and do it again with them.
When we arrived at the mine, we were told that the underground mine tour was suspended indefinitely because the tunnels were flooded by the large amount of rain they received a few months earlier. Then the staff told us there was an above ground tour available- and it was free, so we decided to take it.
We then met our above ground tour guide- Kelsy. Our initial disappointment almost immediately turned into absolute enjoyment! Kelsy was full of knowledge that she presented to us in a very professional and interesting manner She gave us so many amazing facts and stories about the mines and the miner. We got a full understanding of what the life of a miner really was. She has a full knowledge of the mine itself, and the workings of a mine. We were totally enthralled by her narratives. It peaked our interest and we found ourselves asking so many in-depth questions about things we had never heard about before. She answered all of our questions with complete facts, accurate information, all with excitement and a little humor. She amazed us with her wealth of knowledge! It is obvious she loves her job and is one of the best tour guides we hav ever had.
By the end of the tour, (which by the way, lasted much longer that scheduled because she was so interesting which prompted us to ask more questions but she never hurried us up and patiently answered) we felt like she was a longtime friend.
Obviously you can tell that we cannot say enough about Kelsy and the time she spent with us.
We would give Kelsy 10 stars PLUS!
If you happen to read this Kelsy, all of your 8 new best friends, who met you September 4, 2024, say thank you! It was probably the highlight of our trip!

We had such a fun time here. It’s w wild ride in a squished elevator to 2341 feet below the earth, but what an amazing experience it is once you are down there! To staff are wonderful educators about what life was like actually working in the mines - which would not have been great! You ride in a mine cart and get to explore an area and learn what it would have been like before things like electricity! Amazing feats of engineering and tenacity by the workers there for sure. A wonderful place to visit.

I stopped at Soudan mine to look around. The Visitor Center had great information. I was invited to join the tour that had started on the hour. There were 3 ofnus and our tour leader, Karel. So much information and presented in a good way. I was able to see the cables that brought up the workers. Also saw where the ore was smashed... it must have been amazingly loud.
I hope to return next year to see the film and hopefully go down in mine when work.is completed.
Thank you Karel for a very informative tour. Oh we also walked to end of parking lot and saw the deep mine.

Vermilion Ridge State Park is OUTSTANDING! It is most definitely a MUST SEE state park!
It is beautiful and peaceful. The trails are great for biking or walking. Our dogs loved the trails! The lake is gorgeous. The campsite sizes are FANTASTIC!
We are all looking forward to going back next year!!!
The surface mine tour was great. We look forward to going on the tour when they reopen the mines! We enjoyed an ice cream cone after the mine tour at the One Stop.
Ely is about 30 minutes away with tons to do also.

Great campground and location. Quiet and secluded, each site has electric and Wi-Fi. Cleanest restrooms on state park system

I'll be camping at Lake Vermillion State Park this August with my two (smart and curious!) grandsons, age 11 & 13. We will definitely be taking the mine tour but I'm wondering about also adding the science tour. Does it make sense to take both
tours in one day?
tours in one day?

Hello Coteau48 -- Thank you for your question about the mine tours. You can definitely do both tours in one day if you want. The science tour is only at 10 am, so you will want to do some planning. You will get to the surface around 11:15 after the science tour, so depending on when you arrive in August, you can go on the 11:30 or 12 mine tour. If you would rather get lunch first before going back underground, we offer mine tours until 4 pm each. Enjoy your trip.

We purchased mine tour reservations, will we need to pay the park entrance fee as well? Thanks!

Hello MamaBearJ -- Thanks for your interest in the Soudan Underground Mine. If you only plan to visit the mine and you park in the mine parking lot, then you do not need a vehicle permit. If you want to go to other parts of the park, such as the campground or the day use area, then you will want to get either a daily or yearly park permit. Enjoy your stay.

Hello Hunter,
We do not have an age requirement for the regular mine tour. We do require that all participants going underground wear a hard hat which we provide. We have had infants as young as a few months and individuals over the age of 90 that have gone on tours. The tours are family friendly. There is no charge for participants under 5, but you do need to request a ticket when purchasing your other tickets.

Hello Erin, it really depends on your level of discomfort. Are you okay with going in a full elevator? If you are, then this tour should be fine.
When people have issues on the tour it is the cage ride that causes them concerns. We do have a cage on the surface that visitors can get in so they can see what the trip underground would be like. As others have mentioned we do try to keep the cage rides limited to 11 people (depends on the size and age of the people). If someone thinks they might have issues, we encourage them to stand by the doors, as it allows you to look out the window and focus on that rather then the lack of space. Once people are underground people do not seem to have issues. You know yourself best, so the ultimate decision would be yours. Feel free to call the park if you want to discuss this further.

It was a special high oxygen content iron ore that was mined here. Once furnace technology changed in the 1950's this eventually made the mine obsolete. You could then do open pit mining for cheaper lower oxygen content ore and simply inject oxygen at the blast furnace.
