It was a beautiful day to be at the lighthouse. We took the 1 hour gruided tour and had Robert as our guide. He was very interesting and answered all our questions and we could talk about the construction of the property and how hard it was to get those matreials up the cliff. We learned all the history from the ship sinkings that lead to the lighthouse being built to its construction and early lighthouse families. We felt so much closer to the origins and the sustaining years. Also the lens display was beautiful.

The reviews of this place to NOT DO IT JUSTICE! This is a must see if you are in the area from the outside grounds, visitor center, tour movie and touring the buildings and lighthouse. Buy the full package, you will not regret it.

Beautiful. Loved the sights. The lighthouse was really cool, definitely pay to go all the way in and tour. I also got some cool souvenirs from the gift shop inside the lighthouse. There are trails all around for walking. My teen son, who's a runner, even found it perfect and picturesque for a quick run! Got a lot of great pictures but none as good as what my eyes could see. Just beautiful! Great experience.

I go to splitrock every year on a solo bike trip. I always stay at the same solo backpacking site. This year I booked my site a month in advance and made the horrible mistake of showing up on the wrong day! It's a great site and I feel so terrible, but someone showed up that evening who had reserved it for the correct day and just let me stay. I hope you see this and know how sorry I am! BP site is the best one and I stole that from you, and I am so sorry.

To illustrate how amazing Minnesota's North Shore is, this was my fifth favorite State Park during my short visit between Duluth and Grand Portage. It's beauty and views of the shoreline make it an amazing attraction and something you should definitely see on your visit.
However, it did not have the hiking or natural features other state parks did in the area. There is one good hike from the lighthouse and museum going west down the bluff. It has a long boardwalk with what feels like a thousand stairs, but it also has great viewing platforms to the see the lighthouse.
The park can be a little confusing as well. There is a pay station when you first enter the park, but it is more for people who are camping. In an abundance of caution, I bought the state park pass because I knew I would be visiting at least 6. With that said, no one really checked for my pass or payment at any of the parks. Still it was modest price, and for the six parks I saw, I was happy to pay the state for the public places that were provided.
However, to really see the lighthouse and lakeshore, that things that brought you here, you have to purchase a lighthouse ticket, separate from the park, either for the lighthouse or grounds. I was pressed for time and only bought the grounds as I saw all I needed with that ticket. Still if you really like lighthouses and want to go inside, it is a good purchase. I was able to hike to the shore and get great views of the cliff and lighthouse with just a grounds ticket. Either way you will get admission to a nice museum just before the lighthouse on the bluff.
Again, this is a great park with beautiful views of the lake and lakeshore as well as the iconic lighthouse. However, it has some confusion with tickets and passes, and I think there are better parks and attractions along the North Shore if you time is limited to less than 3-4 days. Still the view of the lighthouse is great and well worth the ground's admission ticket.

A truly stunning iconic lighthouse. The campground is good. We were only able to book a site for one night but staying overnight makes it easier to see the lighthouse in good lighting especially early morning and sundown. The only thing I didn’t like was the trail between campground and lighthouse is a bike trail and the ubiquitous electric bikes whiz by. Noisy and obnoxious. I wish the trail could be only for pedestrians and perhaps non electric bikes. Electric bikes really don’t belong with pedestrians and non electric bikes. They are noisy, obnoxious, and dangerous for the rest of us.

We liked this state park! Lots to walk around and see. Can go into a light keeper’s house and the light house, also a history museum and well stocked gift shop. Great views of the lake!

This is a must see stop along the Lake Superior Circle Tour. The view from the light was spectacular! All of the buildings were open, and you could clime to the top of the light. Be sure to walk down to the beach, that’s the best photo op of the light, and a very easy walk. The campground there was great too!

The state park itself is awesome - really beautiful biking and bike trails, and adjacent to the amazing lighthouse. But the campground isn’t a great option for families. There is no dump or fill station, and if you arrive a bit late there’s no one there at the campground to sell you the park pass or firewood. There also seemed to be no playground for children and the road is hilly so not great for little ones to be biking. A beautiful spot for a different kind of camper than a family with young children.

Hiked the Day Hill Trail including Bobs stairway near the campground...this is a must-do, just so you can tell people you accomplished all the steps! Also hiked the Little Two Harbors trail for some awesome pictures of the lighthouse, incredible exploration of pebble beach (seeing the foundation of the old village was interesting), and walked as far as the old pump house at the lighthouse. Did not pay for the lighthouse grounds, so we stopped there.
Make sure to stop at the check in station as you enter the park for any information or advice from the staff. The worker on the day we were there offered up her favorite spots for photos and hikes. Also loved the lego soap items for sale in the station!

If we went in early September will it be too cold to be in the water or sleep in a tent?
撰写日期:2020年8月23日
According to the average weather data online, you may want something a little warmer than tent camping in September: Daily high temperatures of 59°F, rarely falling below 48°F or exceeding 80°F. Daily low temperatures of 42°F, rarely falling below 32°F or exceeding 62°F.

if we're just using hwy 61 to go farther north, do we still have to pay a fee to drive since it goes through the state park?
撰写日期:2019年10月25日
The two people that wrote before me said it all. If you're looking for a GREAT place to stay for a few days while you're up there, Gooseberry Lodge and motel is EXCELLENT!!! Also, we have found that the Rustic Inn, right across highway 61 from the cabins/motel, has better pies than Betty's Pies. It 's a good place to eat too.

No. All camping is primitive at Split Rock Lighthouse SP. All sites are either cart-in or backpack sites. This means no vehicles at campsites. You have to park in a lot and walk from 150 feet to 1/2 mile to the campsites. Tettegouche SP has similar camping but also camper sites with electricity. If you want a campsite with electricity on the North Shore there are several SPs that do have electrical plug-ins.

We are planning to visit Split Rock Lighthouse, but also wondering where a good place would be to view it from Hwy. 61.
撰写日期:2017年9月7日
to me the best place to view it is from the beach area by the picnic grounds in the park south of the lighthouse and along the walking trail. that is where the majority of the pictures are taken. you still need to have the state park sticker on your vehicle. that is $7 for the vehicle for a day. so if you have 4 people in your vehicle, that is $1.75 per person. then you could skip the tour. or buy the sticker that is good for a year at all the state parks for $35. but there is a scenic overlook on 61 south of the park that you can see it from.

I know they charge admission to tour the lighthouse, but can you go here and hike trails and see the outside of the lighthouse without the fee? Is it worth going if you don't want to pay for a whole family to get in the lighthouse?
撰写日期:2016年9月18日
You would need a State Park permit to go hiking in the park. Daily permits are $5 per vehicle.

I know this is an old question, but none of the replies here answer it correctly. The lighthouse lighting ceremony is only done once per year. If it is lit any other time it would be a very special announced occasion. The annual lighting is on November 10, to commemorate the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald on that date in 1975, all 29 lives on that freighter were lost. When they do the lightning ceremony, they sound the warning horns 29 times and they also read the names of those that lost their lives on the fateful night. It is a somber occasion but also very thrilling to be there for it. I have been to the lighting ceremony 5 times. It is a beautiful commemoration. Hundreds of people gather here for it, but the crowd is always manageable.
