This state park is absolutely gorgeous. Has great walking paths and hiking trails, interesting things to learn about the history, and the opportunity to go into the lighthouse. Love coming here!

The lighthouse and grounds are the star of the show here, but don't just stop at the visitor center. There are numerous trails for hiking, biking and skiing. The trails wind along the lake and provide you with breathtaking views.

My husband and I were taking the Lake Superior Scenic North Shore drive and one of our stops was the Split Rock Lighthouse. It’s a picturesque building, set on a high cliff above Lake Superior, and is an excellent place to visit and learn about shipping on the lake and the work of lighthouse keepers to make ship travel safer.

The lighthouse is open for tours, as is one of the keepers’ houses, the oil house, and the fog signal building. Interpretive plaques are plentiful, to guide the visitor as you go, and there are several docents on the site to answer questions and provide assistance as needed. Some will even give a short history of the buildings as you’re visiting them.

A good place to start is the Visitor Center; in addition to the ticket area, there’s also a gift shop, restrooms, and a small information area with more interpretive plaques.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Split Rock Lighthouse, and recommend it for any visitor to the area!

The lighthouse and grounds were a profound memory for over 20 years. They remain well maintained and the location can not be beat. Colors of fall and unexpected fog provided for a good visit.

The experience inside the grounds lacked, many areas we visited previously are no longer accessible. The glass door added to the lighthouse entry is not appropriate and a distraction for photography. The excessive signage, and the large number of photo displays, are a serious disappointment. So many fences and barricades. It’s a museum experience now not a lighthouse adventure.

The entrance building was a shocking surprise. While it offers a number of added features to the attraction it takes away from the feature. The gift shop is great for shopping and offers a vast selection of options which helps to fund the lighthouse grounds, obviously. Wish it had been set somewhere other then blocking the attraction.

My year long anticipation was dashed and memories permanently altered. Still my favorite lighthouse and lighthouse experience, just not this visit.

This is a well-preserved lighthouse on the north shore that has houses, Light and Fog horn building intact. The light still has its lens and is more or less operational (as a museum) . the docents give very nice information and a look at the lighthouse keeper’s life. The information center has a video and collects a fee, ($10/each ?). This allows entry to the houses and light, plus is a nice contribution.

For those of you who are more familiar of the historic site and not the state park, there is a state park here at Split Rock Lighthouse. It features a beach and some other nature trails. (I’ve never walked the trails here before, but I have been on the beach before).

The lighthouse is said to be the most photographed location in the state and is managed by the MN Historical Society. They list current hours daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
MN State Parks are open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and maintain the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The park is where you go to take photos from the shore line. Park office hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with some extended hours in the summer.

This campground is fantastic! The cart-in sites are easy to get to and also secluded so you don't hear other campers. We were in C11 right next to the water and also close enough to restrooms for the kids. Loved hearing the waves along the shore from our site. Split Rock Lighthouse and the grounds are all great places to visit and you can go up into the lighthouse. We could see the lighthouse along the path from our site but the trail was closed off due to a bridge being out so we were unable to hike there. Would be walkable if it was open. Lots of hiking options. Great camping experience!!

Well maintained lighthouse and grounds. Enjoyed the theatre with a short movie about the history of Lake Superior and the need for this lighthouse.
