Our whole family enjoyed stopping at this unique beach! Great for skipping rocks. Definitely recommend stopping here on a drive up the MN north shore.

Park in the lot further from the boat ramp

Judging by other comments, we took the wrong path from the boat ramp. It was a bit of a difficult trail and when we got to the first beach, we thought that was it and thought it was lame. Luckily my husband walked out onto the point for a photo and found the real beach.

It was neat and had great rocks for skipping. The water was too calm for any special sounds.

Pretty area

Headed in the wrong direction at first and were disappointed by the small area...then realized the big beach was to the left of the parking lot. Make sure you go to the left!! Main beach was long and beautiful. Great place for beautiful photos and relaxing.

A nice little stop off along the shore of Lake Superior

A nice and unique beach that is entirely made up of pink rocks. No sand. A beautiful woodsy walk from the parking lot adds to the mystery of the adventure. If you are lucky, you can have a picnic while sitting on a tree log that has washed ahore in a previous storm. Lovely vews. Great place to go that is a little off the beaten path. Bring the kids and make a day of it.

Enjoying the Beach at Iona's Beach Scientific and Natural Area

Good trip. We arrived at approximately 8 am and made our way towards the entrance of the beach. We first ended up in the first parking lot directly to the right, which included access to boats and other water crafts. After figuring out we were not in the right spot, we went to the parking lot directly to the left of the entrance and found the trail that led to the beach. The trail was nicely marked, and we had no trouble finding the beach after a short walk. There was an informational plaque located outside the entrance of the beach that went over how the beach was formed. The beach was on the smaller side, but clean and free from debris. We spent a couple minutes just wondering around and taking a couple pictures and then we left to go to our next excursion.

Tip: I recommend spending 15 minutes here if you truly want to see everything (longer if you want to go for a swim)

Despite the signage only showing southbound traffic where to turn it wasn't hard to find. There's a second stone beach next to the pink beach. The pink stones were very very warm so people were cooling down in the water then lieing down on the sun kissed stones. Trails through some woods lead to rock outcropping. Spent one hour relaxing but didn't walk entire beach. Wobbly.

Beauty and Sound.

Went there with minds made up to experience the visit. The walk across those gorgeous pink rocks felt somewhat intimidating, just be careful. The closer we got to the water, the tinkling sound was more pronounced. The beach was relatively devoid of people. A few others were there , but not too many. It is not meant to be quick Ok , I have seen it, let's go experience. Stop and listen.

Day trip destination - probably not.

We did a day trip and went to Iona's Beach. We had an out of town visitor so decided to bring her to see some of the sites on North Shore. It is a pretty area with lots of pink rocks but the rocks were not making any sounds while we were there. I don't know if it is worth a destination trip but if in the area it is certainly worth a look.

Low water, hard to access beach, no tinkling sound!

We were intrigued by the description so we stopped in on our way back to Duluth from Grand Marais. Be aware that the sign comes up fast, just before the left turn off the highway, when driving south. We missed it and had to circle back. There was ample time after seeing the sign when traveling north. There are 2 adjacent lots. We parked in the lot with a large sign pointing to the beach. There is a short, wide walking path leading to the inlet. We were surprised to find the entrance drop off to a steep and sandy slope with no traction for stepping down safely. I’ll stop here to advise you to choose the adjacent lot for the boat landing instead. There is a gravel path near the porta potties that will get you more safely on the beach, even though it turns into a small meandering path that you will question along the way! Great views of the lake and some rock ledges large enough to venture out onto. The other path is in need of maintenance. We are in decent shape and wouldn’t even attempt the main access to the beach when we got there. The slide down wouldn’t be as bad as the landing on the rocks below! Instead, we ventured through dense brush on a small dirt path along the edge of the ridge hoping to find a smaller incline. We could not imagine how the family of 4 got where they were on the pebbly beach below. The thought crossed our minds that we wouldn’t know how to get back up the incline but we wouldn’t be alone! Took our chances at a less steep opening and did a clumsy slide down without incident. Makes sense that the water would create a ringing or tinkling sound if the water level had been higher. The pebbles are fascinating but they were quiet during our visit! The reason we know about the alternate/better path was that we saw kids on bikes appear across the way and we took it back to the parking lot. Nice stop but disappointing in the end.

Pretty pink rocks, boat ramp and pier

We parked by the boat ramp and walked a short distance to a cove which was pretty. We did not walk far enough to see the longer beach past the cove, so it’s possible we may have missed the best part. From the cove we walked back to the boat ramp area and my husband fished (unsuccessfully) from the pier. Beside the boat ramp the beach has small pink rocks, but there is a home overlooking the area and a fence blocking off their private property.
