I will bring binoculars for birds next time. Enjoyed hiking around the lake on the Lake Thoreau Loop Trail. Had to detour around mud or water several times. Hours: 8-5, Open for USM activities on weekdays. Open to public on weekends. Confusing to find - from W 4th St. take Lake Thoreau Rd and turn Right on "Thoreau" (see photo). This street is not shown on Google Maps. Turn right at white sign. Down a quarter of a mile.

Lake Thoreau may be my favorite outdoor element in the Pinebelt. Dr. Mike Davis is creating stellar programming to introduce people to the great outdoors and all of the things the Pinebelt ecology has to offer. From nighttime bug walks to reptile and amphibian encounters to native plant sales, Lake Thoreau is passionate about conservation and education around Mississippi's natural environment. Check out their summer camps and weekend activities and get out there and enjoy nature!

Lake Thoreau as a teenager was privately owned and I had permission to fish there. It was willed to the USM Biology Department to be run as a training facility for youth to learn about Longleaf Pine Ecosystems. They offer camps for children teaching them about herpetology, entomology, botanical, and other aspects of our local ecosystem.
