We greatly appreciated the museum and the well informed staff. There are so many interesting artifacts in the museum, and after chatting with us, the man who worked there pointed out things that matched our interests. It is a bit of an eclectic collection, but I guarantee you will find something to catch your eye…be it a fossil, a letter from George Washington, a weapon or a flag. This museum is like a step back in time, no modern day multimedia displays.
They have senior rates, student rates, and military rates, but even full price is not high. We felt we got our money’s worth before we left the main building to drive through the park! The different buildings were interesting, and we liked climbing the lookout tower. We did glimpse the Mississippi River, but it’s far off in the distance now after it changed course so long ago.

This was a neat stop that wasn't expensive. $5 entry fee for military, which is purchased at the museum. The staff was friendly and provided a map for the self-driving/walking tour - depending on how adventurous you are. A few buildings, some old earthworks, a tower to take in the views, and a cemetery comprise the park.

Stopped by with a hope of learning a little history and get a chance to see the Mississippi close up. Very friendly and well informed gentleman in the small museum. The area of park near the river was closed due to high water so that was a disappointment. We drove through the park and stopped to eat our picnic lunch. I had read of the Civil War batt.e fought nearby do enjoyed being here. Museum had a replica of the ironclad chip of the time.

What a charming, off-the-beaten track park. My adult son and I visited on late winter morning. The museum is small, but informative. There is a small recreated village with several items like cannons and an ambulance from the time of the Civil war. Besides the historical aspects, there is a campground and picnic area. Don't expect to see the Mississippi River which has long since changed its course.

Beautiful park and just a ton of history. We went and visited for an afternoon and really enjoyed ourselves. We probably walked 1.5 miles and visited the cemetery, observation tower, and multiple sites where confederate soldiers defended the area during the Vicksburg campaign. The park also has a first rate museum along with several antique buildings near the museum. The camping ares are very nice with full hook up, 30 & 50 amp for $25/night. The lower campground looked more appealing to us. The park is several miles outside of Port Gibson,MS. Bring everything you need. I look forward to returning

My friends and I stopped here on our way back from Vicksburg Military Park, and it was well with the visit. The museum had a great array of artifacts from the Civil War and a display of old wagons that date back to the nineteenth cemetery. If you are a Civil War buff or a student of history, then you should visit Grand Gulf Military Park.

The Grand Gulf Military Park is a hidden gem located between Vicksburg and Natchez, Mississippi. The amount of history packed into this small(ish) park is amazing. The trail / road is about a mile and half long and is walkable, but be prepared for a workout. The road around the park takes back in time to the 1800’s. There is an old church that is open for touring, an old two story log home that is also open. The open home and church are self guided, and you will need to watch your step. These structures were built in the 1800’s and restoration is not complete.
About half way around the loop there is an old cemetery with graves dating back to the early 1800’s. The grounds are well kept and inviting to walk through. We found the cemetery to quite awe inspiring and somewhat humbling to walk through.
Across from the cemetery there is an observation tower that provides a spectacular view of the terrain and what was once a fierce battle ground during the civil war. The tower is an easy climb, if you are not afraid of heights.
The park also boasts a campground with full hook-ups and very reasonable rates.
There is a museum with tons of artifacts from the civil war, and even prehistoric times. The staff are incredibly friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have. There is an outdoor section to the museum that has old carriages, fire trucks and even the city’s old jail.
This is a place that you should visit if you are into the history around the civil war, or even if you are a nature buff.

Grand Gulf Military Park is a hidden treasure, a historic monument off Route 61 between Vicksburg and Natchez, a few miles from Port Gibson. My wife and I have visited the location three times and we never are disappointed by what we see. The first thing I remember about Grand Gulf is the entrance, where a sign marks a 29-foot-high point where the water crested in 1927, capping the worst flood in the history of the United States. Historically, there are the earthworks of two Confederate fortifications that attempted to prevent Union gunboats from approaching Vicksburg. There is a museum. campsites, picnic grounds, a Confederate Memorial Chapel that was built in 1868, the Grand Gulf cemetery, hiking trails and an observation tower that offers a spectacular view of the Mississippi River and the surrounding area. Located eight miles northwest of Port Gibson, near a Nuclear plant, Grand Gulf Military Park is a 400-acre Mississippi landmark that was opened in 1962 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It preserves the memory of the 1963 battle that was fought here and the town of Grand Gulf, which was originally a busy port on the Mississippi River but after being burned in the Civil War and a shift in the flow of the river, it became a ghost town with only a few restored buildings dating back to Grand Gulf's heyday. Oh, be wary of the geese that inhabit the grounds surrounding the chapel. They can get downright angry at times.

If you want tv (unless you have satellite, which we don't ), wifi (unless you have a personal hotspot and even then it's VERY sketchy) and phone service (unless you're willing to travel 5 miles into town), this is not the place for you. if you enjoy peace and quiet, you'll like this campground. We were there in January and everything was brown and stickly. There's an upper and a lower campground. Upper has fire pits, lower has better water pressure per desk clerk. The road into the campground is narrow with low lying branches, not class A friendly. Was farther than expected from Vicksburg which was our priority. Staff was friendly but don't lose the gate code after closing as it's nearly impossible to find someone to help you get in. The normal road from Route 61 is closed for repairs and the detour was long, winding, and again, in spots, not Class A friendly. Nice park for some but not for us. We wished they had disclosed many things on their website or on the phone before we booked there.

Can you make reservations for a full hookup site? I've tried calling several times and no one answers.

I have no idea. When we were there, there was a woman in the museum who was a full-time employee and seemed to be very involved with the camping area. Also when we were there, the Mississippi River had been over one of the roads to the park. It was just beyond the turn-in when we were there and the employee said she expected it would be back at the entrance in a day or so. If so, she was not expected to come to work. That was about May 10. With all the rain, I wouldn't be surprised if the road was under water again. I'd try emailing if that is an option. It seems like someone would be answering emails. Good luck!

Several people showed up in RV's when we were there. There's a very small parking lot when you first turn in, but the staff was very friendly and came out to direct people on where they SHOULD park if in an RV...
