I had always meant to go to these markets and finally got there. You don’t go to these markets for the prettiness or the boutique feta cheese – you go there to buy bargains - fruit, veg, flowers and seafood - often in bulk. Like everyone else has said, be prepared and take with you cash and a bit of attitude. You’ll be hustling and bustling with hundreds and thousands of people all hellbent on getting that box of tomatoes. Watch out for grannies bearing down on you with killer trolleys like some crazy dodgem ride. It was all great fun and just a sample of what we bought - two bunches of flowers for two dollars each (one celosia and another proteas). One bunch of purple irises for $5. 2kg of plums for $4. 700g of medium cooked tiger prawns for $14. Four avocados for two dollars a kilo. 1 kg of sugar bananas (that is the small ones, not cavendish) for $4. A whole cauliflower for $3. We didn’t even buy whole boxes but if you want to buy in bulk, you can save heaps. Tomatoes, plums, lemons, passionfruit, you name it, they will sell it to you. Contrary to what other people said, things were priced and prices were displayed (mostly). However this is still a cash economy so bring all that cash you want to get rid of. Be prepared to go with the flow of humanity and do a little bit of crowd weaving/slight barging, or go later when the bargains start closer to closing time on Saturday.
But go a bit earlier if you want flowers because it was starting to close down about 10:30am on Saturday.
Fun food frenzy!

If you can't handle crowds then this market is not for you! We got there early as my aim was to get flowers and it was already packed. The parking is a bit of a nightmare but having a car does make it easier to get your purchases home if you buy bulky items. Produce market was good but ridiculously busy (not sure if that is typical as it was coming up to Christmas). Lots of food is sold in bulk so good for businesses however might not be helpful if you only want a few items. If you want a trolley you need to pay a deposit.

We have been coming to the Sydney Markets on a regular weekly basis and generally we are quite happy with the produce. The prices are cheaper than your local Veg Market. However there are some variations. Lately we have noticed much higher prices and deteriorating quality. Perhaps the weather may have something to do with it, as well as the recent catastrophic events with the bushfires and the subsequent flooding. We can still find lower prices on similar goods but some items are priced the same or in some instance more than local shops! We have compared prices! So you need to be extra careful.... Still you are bound to save quite a bit when shopping, particularly in bulk. We found that coming at around 1.00 pm is a very good time regarding parking, better prices and fewer shoppers.

The Sydney Markets are not only an amazing experience but a place for some fantastic bargains. Easy to get to by car or public transport (Flemington railway station). If you are going on a weekend for fruit and vegetable shopping take plenty of cash in small notes or coins and get there early to park close and to bet the best bargains and the freshest produce.

The Sydney Market is a huge Godown with a stall concept. One can take a train to Flemington Station (and walk another 500 m) or drive to Sydney market. Do bring along a trolley (or hire one for $2) to cart the goodies that you buy. The retail section is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. There are more stalls on Saturdays than on Sundays.
Right from fresh fish, a range of seasonal vegetable, flowers and fruits are sold by boxes or by the kilo. The catch from the sea is fresh and ample to chose from. The fruits and vegetables are definitely cheaper than what you may pay at the supermarkets. However, you need to be careful when buying items by boxes. Some of them may lack the expected quality control.
The place can be crowded depending on the time of your visit. Do walk around the whole market once before deciding to buy. Once you buy an item, you may find the same item at a cheaper price at a neighbouring stall. At times the cheaper ones may not be of the same quality. Hence pick quality produce and decide to pay if you are happy with the price.
If you are a tourist and happen to be nearby, a visit to the market is an experience.

Exceptional well laid with a wide variety of goods and itmes for sale. Prices are competitive and bartering is quite acceptable. Plenty of parking and highly recommended.

If you can put up with pushy and extremely rude people then this is a worthwhile trip. Lots of variety and prices. Can really save on your fruit and vegetables. Come prepared with a shopping trolley or hire a supermarket sized one around about $5,00.
I would advise that you investigate all stalls before purchasing as the prices vary quite a bit. Personally I don't think it is a suitable place for wheelchairs or mobility scooters and I recommend comfortable walking shoes as the floor is usually littered with fruit peelings.

We happened to be staying in the hotel next door to the markets.

There is so much fresh produce to choose from at very good prices. It is obviously popular as there were a lot of people buying their vegetables there. You can buy fruit and veggies in boxes (bulk) or separately.

There is also a huge seafood section as well.

If I lived in the area, I would definitely be buying my fresh veggies here.

This market is pretty good for fresh food and vege. There are a few stalls with nick nacks but it's all cheap stuff.
