Wasn’t sure how interesting this place would be, as we chose it as a stop off on route to somewhere else. Was very pleasantly surprised at how remarkable the interiors of the house are and the history of the place.
Be sure to pop across to the ruin next door!

Well because it was the lovely Bank Holiday for Easter, as a Family we used our national trusty passes and decided to visit Hardwick Hall, all except my eldest who had to pay, a shocking £19,
Shocked at the price to visit we plodded on through the mud,
The cafe was our fist stop, and not busy was amazing!
After spending a whopping £48 on some light refreshments
We all got instant dissatisfaction!
1. A sausage roll comes with coleslaw and side garnish? On the receipt you are charged extra £1.75 for this? Unwanted extras!!
2. Mozzarella and sun blushed pesto is: exactly packet sliced mozzarella and tomato pesto spread on a stale rock hard sour doe cob that cannot be eaten!
3. A sausage cob is basic ( no frills) sausages, with extra sides of a dirty plate!

We were utterly gobsmacked at being shafted in the first 30 minutes,
Oh and young waitress wasn’t interested when I questioned the extra cost of side salad with sausage roll,

Looking to escape our negativity we wandered towards the House!

The architecture was a beautiful feature but the lack of interaction with staff, ( except to check you’ve paid)
We soon noticed staff (volunteers) only give out information if you approach them and ask!
So we soon found it a little boring! Gloomy,

They’ve done away with the interactive video ( we could sit and watch)

And I’ve forgotten what it’s all about,
Wandering around from room to room,
But Big shout out to the Volunteer man in the last bedroom!
He gladly gave out information for free!
He chatted in an interesting way and had a group of followers all happy to listen
The Blue bed I think he talked about,

Happy to see the kitchen and the exit,
we made our exit for fresh air,

Oh couldn’t wait to see the car, what a wet bank holiday it was,
Cheers for reminding me to visit elsewhere next time, and I recommend taking a supply of food and drink if you visit and have good taste like me 😊

I brought my mam for her Mother's Day present Afternoon Tea.
The staff were so friendly and helpful.
The Afternoon Tea was the best one we have ever had. The sandwiches were delicious, we had two scones which were perfect and the cakes were mini trifle, lemon, chocolate eclair and fruit merigan. I chose here for the choice and we were not disappointed.
Will definitely be back. Thank you

Incredible exterior architecture but inside was a little disappointing. Yes the tapestries are amazing but I found the place rather gloomy. Undoubtedly a great insight into the lives of the super wealthy Elizabethan style. I didn’t connect with Hardwick in the way I had hoped.

We visit National Trust residences and Historic Houses regularly.
I've never been to Hardwick Hall before and was disappointed that the house has very little information available about it's history and contents as you tour each room.
The room volunteers have red information folders that contain some fascinating details but that relies on you asking a volunteer, them telling you , them being free to speak to you or them second guessing what you might find interesting.
Eg the fossilised elk skull - i had to google it when we left to find out more about it ( there isnt even a sign in the room saying what it is).
Other NT properties have leaflets/ room cards/ notices but not Hardwick Hall for some reason - the large cards in some rooms were pretty limited and not much use tbh.
I managed to skim read a folder that was unattended and it was full of interesting information about the furniture, ornaments, structure of the building etc

Written information enables you to pick out exactly what you want.

Not sure we'd revisit tbh.

Profoundly disappointing. For a start only part of the hall was open: and the rest was in Stygian gloom because of a rather twee attempt to recreate the atmosphere of a Tudor Christmas. That meant that the history, the tapestries and (especially) the wonderful dark oak furniture were almost impossible to appreciate. I could understand it if one room were to be specially styled for the season: but to wreck the whole visitor experience of the hall in the service of an ill-conceived “installation” is not easily forgiven, especially at NT prices.

The structure itself is stunning, a beautiful piece of history. The grounds make for a lovely walk and the experience of holding a lantern to view the artworks, rooms and tapestries.

The tapestries are amazing, so intricate and there is a great recreation in the long gallery which shows what they looked like when first made, their colour rich and vibrant.

When we visited, the wonderful Nathan answered our questions and provided us a brilliant insight. With his help, we analysed paintings, learned History and Latin and felt connected with the people whose portraits lined the walls. It was the highlight of the trip and he really made the History come alive. I learned so much and felt for Arabella, that I purchased a book on her straight after. (Thank you Nathan!!!)

In all, it's a great place to visit, learn about the history and enjoy a day out. Cannot recommend it enough.

After 20 years of fantastic Christmas visits to Hardwick this years was a total disappointment. I can't even describe how bad it was. They were supposed to be offering up an Elizabethan Christmas so there are no Christmas trees or anything else we'd associate with a post Dickensian Christmas. As a lover of Elizabethan history I'm good with that. Great to see how different eras celebrated Christmas. But it wasn't even that.... The house in darkness and lanterns were a nice touch but that's where it ended. There were strange things like a letter writing theme which didn't seem to bear any relation to Christmas.
The big focus for Elizabethans was the 12 days of Christmas with food, decorations, sports, dancing, mayhem and games. None of that was even mentioned. We had the Lord of Misrule writing poems to us but no explanation of who the he was. And in the long gallery there was piano music. The piano wasn't invented until the 18th century! Where was the authentic Elizabethan dancing music?
So National Trust please do go for an authentic Elizabethan Christmas at this great Elizabethan house but please tell and show us how they celebrated.

Also why do the National Trust hate the word Christmas? The Elizabethan's used the word. Wintertide meant winter generally and wasn't used to refer to Christmas.

Had a lovely trip to hardwick hall. It showed how the victorians did Christmas, dimmed lighting, you could walk around with a lantern, which gave it a lovely atmospheric feel.
