There wasn't a lot there. Took about 5 minutes to walk through. The lady insisted on taking our pictures, which made my teen aged kid feel uncomfortable.

This was a must visit in Hannibal. We learned so much about this other side of Hannibal's history and the enslaved of the town. The building is not big but we spent about 90 minutes here. Faye was a wealth of knowledge and very welcoming. Well worth our time.

This is a must see for your stop in Hannibal. My son and I have been visiting all of the tourist attractions in town in the past month and this was one place we would highly recommend. Mrs. Dant was kind enough to set up a tour during the off season and was very informative. The museum shares the history of Daniel Quarles, as well as slavery in our region, as well as the history of triumphs of the African American community despite the obstacles they faced. Don't miss it!

Off the main part of town, but still nearby, is a small stone building with a large sign out front denoting "Jim's Journey." It tells the story of Jim, a character in Huck Finn, by Mark Twain, based upon a real person, a black slave at the time he wrote the book.
The building is a small one room place filled with stories, photos, and artifacts relating to the slavery at the time, and the real people it involved. It is self guided. There wasn't even someone there other than myself when I visited.
The story is well told, well laid out. You feel the pain, the frustration, the reality of slavery. I highly recommend stopping here if you are in Hannibal, and just for the record, I am an old white guy, so my perspective is not one viewing it as one who this is all too familiar to. It's important to hear other peoples' histories and stories.

Daniel Quarles, the real-life model for Jim in Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, has a small but detailed museum that tells the African American story in Missouri. Lots of little-known history here.

Faye Dant, the executive director graciously made herself available so that we wouldn't miss the opportunity to tour this important museum. We learned about a part of Hannibal history that isn't fully covered in any of the other historic sites in the town. Jim's Journey is a vital and necessary part of any visit to Hannibal. Without it, you won't have the full history of the town. Twain, himself, would recommend it, I'm sure.

This is an excellent museum that tells the story of the Black American who inspired the escaped slave, Jim, from Mark Twain's classic Huckleberry Finn. You need to call ahead and set up a viewing, because the museum is run by a retired corporate executive. Faye provides fascinating history, which is part of her own personal history, as she is a descendant of some of the American captives who built Hannibal and many other places in America, including the White House. I am grateful to her for filling in the blanks in this much-needed history.

It seemed like it would be a great place to visit and learn the history about Jim. We went by the location and it was closed. The website doesn't say anything about when it is open and no signs saying when it is open. It almost looks like it is closed permanently. Not sure what is going on with this.

Looking at some of the bad reviews, it seems like they're almost all people who wanted to see this place, but weren't able to. YES, it's small. And I guess they have limited hours. I went with a group, and the organizer called ahead and arranged for it to be open for us, and for a docent to give a talk. This little place is PACKED with a lot of history that you won't hear about at the regular stops. I believe it's only been open for 10 years, but they've put together a fantastic museum, with SO MANY stories about each and every item. A must see! Entry fee is by donation.

We love museums and Jim's Journey did not disappoint! We were greeted by a wonderful woman, Faye. She gave us a short history and explained how the museum came to be. So much family history from the people of Hannibal! Kids will enjoy it! Please don't leave Hannibal without visiting Jim's Journey!!
