This was a very good insight into the world and era of TWA travel. We had a detailed tour given by a retired TWA employee and were able to see and explore an old plane, sections of various Boeing planes, TWA training facilities and displays of TWA uniforms and dresses. Overall a very good tour in a well laid out museum.

What a Wonderful Experience!! Had been wanting to visit and this historical museum did not disappoint. Was warmly greeted by Dianne a former TWA Flight Attendant. "Woody" was our personal guide and there's so much rich aviation history that one visit just isn't enough.
This hidden gem in Kansas City is worth a visit! Enjoy!
There's also a great gift shop too with lots of TWA and Ozark Airline items.

Situated at the city airport, this is not a usual tourist stop. This museum is a gem if you are interested in airlines, especially TWA. Tours are given by former employees. Our guide John was wonderful with his stories of being an engineer and then a pilot for TWA. They have an older plane, training plane cockpits, model planes, and lots of paraphernalia from the airline’s history. Everyone is welcoming and the gift shop has some amazing pieces to purchase from the airline’s history. It is a bit difficult to locate (with construction there), though worth the effort.

I found the TWA museum on TripAdvisor.com when I was looking for things to do in Kansas City (apart from the National WW1 Museum) … I’m very interested in military and/or aviation history! The TWA Museum is a gem, very unique, certainly one-of-a-kind and located in TWA’s original hangar/building. It has a wide range of TWA memorabilia (e.g., aircraft models, uniforms, simulators, and a Electra 12A aircraft, etc.) and tells the story of this airline from its inception as Transcontinental and Western Air in 1930 until being acquired by American Airlines in 2001. The volunteers were very welcoming and my guide, Jay S., in particular, was amazing, full of stories/insights into TWA, its history and key personalities. If you’re interested in commercial aviation, this is a must-see museum.

Our AirBNB was close to this museum. Roadways are a little confusing, but be determined to get to this museum, it is worth the effort.

We did not fully know what to expect at this museum. The volunteers are all former TWA employees which adds to the experience of this museum. We first thought that we were going to be leading ourselves through the museum, but they asked if we wanted a docent to lead us through. We had the docent and in certain areas of the museum, former flight attendants talked about uniforms and first class china and other flight amenities.

We could have done a portion without a docent, but we would never been able to as much as we did. You will need a docent to take you out to the hanger and other areas outside of the main portion of the museum.

We enjoyed ourselves immensely.

Worth the time to visit.

This museum was worth a visit for airplane buffs and others alike. I was there as the non-engineer with two engineers. They found all the details about the airplanes and the simulator fascinating, but there were also things to look at and learn besides just all the dials and switches. It was interesting to learn that TWA was responsible for pilots having to file flight plans, for instance, or that flight attendants wore “paper” dresses at one point and carried around tape for hasty dress repairs mid-flight. I could go on with more details of the interesting things we saw and learned, but you should just go there and see for yourself.

The museum is set up so that you have a guided tour through all the museum, including the hangar rooms, but then you can stay in the main three rooms for as long as you want. Note that all the rooms outside the main 3 you cannot return to at a later time, so if you want more time there, you should ask while you are in those rooms. We didn’t ask, but I suspect they would accommodate such a request. Our guide was quite knowledgeable (TWA retiree himself) and also personable. We had a tour to ourselves, but I’m not sure if that is customary or just that there were very few people there at the day/time we went (the day before a holiday).

I would NOT suggest this museum for any children under about 10 years old. There’s a lot of reading, and it is primarily standing around looking at things and listening to someone else talk about them. Aside from one video about how plane engines work, there is nothing multimedia (which is great, in my opinion) and there are no interactive exhibits. It’s a very “adult” museum.

Sometimes you visit a museum and you can really tell it was put together (and staffed!) by people who are passionate about the subject -- the TWA Museum is definitely one of those. A wonderful collection of items, including some really cool planes, old flight simulators and models, that deserves more recognition and funding.

This is a museum that is anchored in the passion of its volunteers. It is quaint and specialized and thoroughly enjoyable. I gather the tour guides are retired TWA people and I expect no two tours are the same. Also, the tour process is informal - you show up and someone will step up to show you around. Our tour guide, Judith, a one time stewardess, was very knowledgeable about the breadth of exhibits but, as my husband commented that evening, he never expected to learn so much about their outfits. I expect other tour guides have different areas of expertise to share. This museum is still growing, some exhibits are still under construction but the “joy” in this museum is real. Again, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Hard to find but worth it. Lot of construction around the site. Previous headquarters of TWA . Volunteers, who are former employees escort you through the different rooms, exhibits and planes. Didn't know Howard Hughes owned the airline and Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart flew for them. Should easily be in the top ten sites to see in KC.

An incredible bargain considering the wealth of items on display, not to mention the knowledge and professionalism of the employees. A must for aviation fans.
