Stopped into the TWA museum which is located at a real working private airport. Greeted right away by two friendly front desk people that explained the layout of the museum, took our money, and got a guy from the back for a personal tour through training rooms with simulators, a full size hanger with planes inside.
Then we worked back to the rather small museum, but had so much to look at. Very small gift shop. Friendly place, lots of parking. Would definitely refer people to this tour.

We spent more than 2 hours here as we were provided with a tour guide (as part of the $10 entrance fee), who explained in great detail about the planes, uniforms, routes, and more. I’m not a fanatical airplane guy, yet I enjoyed the many details about how the airline industry changed so much since TWA’s early days to its buyout by American Airlines.

Great museum! It was a walk (flight) down memory lane. My wife and I got our own tour. A former TWA flight attendant (stewardess then) took us around the first room where we got a good history lesson, to include aircraft, routes, fashion, and the evolution of passenger amenities. She flew international routes, so we got some great background information. We were then handed off to a past mechanical engineer who completed the tour. I was able to sit in a flight simulator and we toured a hanger where my wife climbed aboard a Transcontinental prop research plane. There was a room to remember TWA’s flight 800, which exploded after taking off from JFK in 1996 with 230 people on board. Also remembered was the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 in 1985 from Beirut to Algiers. Both our docents were terrific and took pride in their past with TWA. We walked away with mixed emotions, as I had great memories flying with TWA, but it was sad that such a great major United States airline no loner flies.

Former TWA employees created and run this museum and their enthusiasm has resulted in a first rate experience for visitors. I thought 1 hour would suffice but we were there for over 2 and if we had not somewhere else to visit we could have stayed longer. Everything was donated by someone who recognized the historical value of the memorabilia and made an effort to protect it. Things representing every aspect of airline travel during TWA's heyday All of the staff were charming people with entertaining stories to share. They continue to be very proud of the work they did and of TWA's successful run. GPS made it easy to find and parking is convenient and free.

I never knew that an airline attempted for a few months themed trips that served up international-like foods with stewardesses dressed in attire--all of which today would be deemed inappropriate--must have been deemed wrong or at least financially unsuccessful for the 1960s, too.
I also never knew that stewardesses were dismissed for being 30, or being married, or being a mother.
I also never knew that Pope John Paul II flew once flew TWA, had some good wine, with a multi-course dinner that included caviar.
There's a lot of information tucked away in this little museum. Wonderful guides. Some really cool artifacts. And of course, there's a take-off and landing simulator.
My only wish if for them to attempt to replicate the administrative area, including Howard Hughes' office, and add that to the tour.
However, this is a hidden gem for a lover of history within Kansas City!

My husband and I lucked into our own personal tour of this amazing museum. We’re we’re greeted by Gary who said he’d give us the one hour tour and proceeded to tell us the story of TWA. He guided us around the exhibits and was emotionally attached to the entire museum through his personal experience with everything in this museum. He left no room out and gave us the inside scoop of all the exhibits. When he finished two and a half hours later, we felt like we had known him for years. We would recommend this Museum to any aviation buff.

I spent 2.5 hours but could have spent half a day at least. Lots of history, excellent guides and staff. Many of the staff are retired TWA employees. My guide was a former accountant in the TWA business office. The nice lady in gift shop was a former flight attendant. Loved the old pics lining the entrance hall. Howard Hughes had an office overlooking the maintenance hanger. Nice gift shop.

The history of TWA is presented in so many different photographs, displays, and memorabilia. I remembered a lot from my days in Kansas City, but I learned more about how TWA was such a huge part of Kansas City. The guides were excellent and the gift shop has some really cool TWA items! The museum is located in the old Kansas City Municipal Airport terminal.

If you lived in or grew up around the Kansas City area in the decades of the late 20th Century, then you know TWA was our city's airline. This museum is a lovely tribute to TWA, which was a cornerstone of Kansas City life. The number of artifacts on display is fantastic . . . which is kind of surprising when you realize the museum isn't really that big. But there are all kinds of exhibits about planes, personnel, transitions from props to the jet age, and displays explaining TWA's training programs for all kinds of positions. There's even a memorial to TWA employees lost in the line of duty, including many who were aboard Flight 800 in 1996. The volunteers are very kind and informative. Be sure to have them take you out into the hangar so you can see additional exhibits. Whether you're a Kansas City native or just an airline enthusiast, you'll enjoy time spent exploring this gem of a museum.
