An amazing place to enjoy nature's beauty and experience the work of a man dedicated to his faith. The grottos are all outdoors and do require walking and climbing stairs. The shrine is interesting, and a very small museum is available to learn more about how the land was used in the past. The gift shop was not open and there wasn't anyone available to talk to during our visit. I hope someday soon there is a renewed interest in saving this one-of-a-kind relic!

I have been coming here ever since 1960! This beautiful location inspired one of the Franciscan brothers to build these shrines by himself. Many visitors left their jewelry and semi-precious stones to decorate the shrines. But in recent years, some vandals have chiseled the more valuable stones out of their settings. Even so, you can appreciate the devotion of the Franciscan brother and the visitors.

I am not a very religious person but there is something so moving about the beauty of religion when it’s done right. We were met by 2 people when we got out of the car at the chapel. So friendly and welcoming. It’s a short walk around to the various grottos. A nice descriptive pamphlet is available at the chapel and also signposts along the way. A beautiful little spot just S of St Louis. If you’re in the area I do recommend this little detour off the interstate.

Absolutely beautiful. Open air chapel with statues. You can buy a candle for $4 to light. Cute little gift shop. Many statues. Stairs to many of the statues. Easy to get lost keep going straight right off St. Joseph Hills Rd.

The Black Madonna Shrine and Grottos is a beautifully serene destination. It is a wonderful place to spend time meditating and praying. A winding path takes you through several grottos dedicated to Saints. The path culiminates with scenes from the Crucifixion of Christ. The Stations of the Cross circle the outdoor chapel. Catholic Mass is offered on Sunday mornings, but you should check before going. While the Shrine is built and preserved as a Catholic site, it is enjoyable for anyone who is a Christian. The amount of love and care that went into the grottos is amazing. The site is free, but donations are appreciated.

Over 90 years ago, a Franciscan Missionary, Brother Bronislaus Luszcz began the construction of these shrines out of the surronding tiff. He did it to honor the mother of Christ, the Virgin Mary. I remember my father conversing with the good Brother upon a visit during the 60's. We return periodically to visit and even today, it holds a special place in my heart.

There is an interesting history attached to this peaceful shrine that was built single-handed lay by one monk many years ago. It is a short walk from the outdoor chapel to visit each of the shrines dedicated to several saints. In another area nearby are the Stations of the Cross. A small gift shop at the rear of the chapel was of particular interest to the Catholics in our group. Some bought candles to light at the altar. If you’re looking for peace and tranquility, this is a good place to go. It is supported solely by donations.

We were so glad we took the time to find this gem in rural Missouri. The Franciscan brothers have preserved this labor of love by a monk who singlehandedly formed the prayerful grottoes depicting scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary. Their Polish roots brought devotion to the Black Madonna of Czestochowa to this remote corner of Missouri, The caretaker on site was generous with his time and information.

The sheer dedication of the people who put these shrines/grottoes together is amazing. Whether you come here to pray or simply out of curiosity it is worth a stop. We were the only ones there the morning we went. That allowed us time to really look at all of the rocks, shells, pieces of glass and everything else that went into creating these displays. We were awed imagining the amount of time and dedication necessary to build these.
