Are there any places to lock up bikes if we want to stop and go in a building?
It seems to me that there are racks at certain locations but certainly there are many, many oramental fences and light poles at any of the attractions. There are hundreds of bikes in the park everyday. You also have the option of renting bikes in the park. Have fun!

What are the hours and days of operation of the trolley at Forest Park? Do you pay $2.00 each time you get off and on or is that an all day pass?
Starts at 10??and believe the bus ends at 7pm but that may change for special events and/or seasons or when zoo closes ( go to the zoo!!) . Price ( exact cash only) is for full day. You ll pay when getting on bus and a tix ( which our driver never bothered to punch for day/month) was given to us. That meant we could just use it another time as well but we didn’t, it’s certainly inexpensive enough. Pay once for full day in/off as much as you want. Grab a map at the welcome center, see where u want to go and the stops. Much to see and most FREE, enjoy!

How do you avoid incredible traffic jam leading into only entrance converging from the expressway? Drove there yesterday noonish but had to give up and turn right instead of left at entrance, where traffic was moving - so saw the golf course, big lake, etc and left.

Clearly you got caught in zoo traffic coming in off on Hampton. The better options, even if you are going to the zoo is too get off at either end of the park (McClausand or Kingshighway). We were at the park yesterday and saw the traffic at the zoo - we were walking.
Google Forest Park and study a map to figure out where you want to go. Traffic is very manageable unless you are near the zoo.

Thank you you, folks, for the answer. I don't now. I wasn't driving and am so new to St Louis.

Planning our first trip to the Friday 'balloon glow' this year, any tips ? According to the website, 'Because of the enormous crowd turnout, the vehicle entrances to Forest Park are usually closed by 3pm', what time would you suggest we arrive ? What are some suggested activities before the glow starts ?

Forest park has the zoo, art museum, history museum, parks and more. They are all free but not very close to each other.
There is parking along streets but you want to get their early. You can also park in the zoo parking lot for a fee. To me it's worth it.
The botanical gardens has a free parking lot and I have never had a problem finding a place to park unless it happens to be a special event when all of St. Louis is there. If you go, be sure to pay extra to go through the climitran. It is amazing. And if you have kids, go to the childrens garden. You can walk through the gardens or pay for a tram ride to take you through.
The Arch has it's own parking lot and you do have to pay a small fee but parking is usually plentiful.
City Museum also has it's own parking lot that you will have to pay to park in but I've never had any trouble finding a space.
You didn't mention the Science Center but it also has it's own lot you have to pay for but like the rest, there should be no issue finding a space.
As for hotels, I like The Parkway which is pretty close to the Botanical Gardens, Science Center and Forest Park. They also offer a free shuttle.
