Living near St. Louis, we usually visit the Zoo, Grant's Farm, or Purina Farms for our animal fix. We found Critter Lane a nice change of pace. You'll get to view and feed lots of animals and, in the barn, hold several critters, as well.

Admission is very reasonable, with small additional charges for cups of feed and animal rides.

There are a few small buildings housing critters and several large outdoor enclosures. There are also a few picnic tables, a bouncy house, and a small playground. Critter Lane is very rural so be sure to bring snacks/lunch, water, and anything else you might need.

Check their website for closures and other pertinent information!

Went here on a field trip and was highly disappointed. The animals are not well taken care of. They were VERY hungry like they hadn't eaten in days and some of the enclosures were downright disgusting. It broke my heart walking around there. The "playground" is dirty and unsafe. The seesaw had a broken part - leaving sharp pieces of wood exposed. The metal tractor had sharp pieces of metal sticking up everywhere - one boy actually cut his finer. It was tetanus waiting to happen. We paid a head of time per child for the field trip, but then when we got there, were expected to pay extra everything else - bird feeding sticks, tractor ride, the questionable swing ride. What about the kiddos that didn't have parents there? That should have been included in the fee we already paid or don't offer the extras. I will not be back and plan on contacting someone regarding the living conditions of those poor animals.

This place is the best for little kids. Very reasonably priced to get in, the animals are all great with the kids. The rides are great for kids that are preschool age and the staff is very friendly.

The staff is super friendly and informative and my 2 year old loves it here! Such a great place to come to just to get out of the house with her for a little bit, and only $6 plus $3 for a good size cup of food is really reasonable considering how many animals they have that she gets to see. She has fun every time we go. I love coming just as much as she does.

This place is a "hidden gem". I live in the area, but I didn't know about this zoo until last week. It's only 3 or 4 miles off U.S. 67, so it is easy to reach. Call and get directions, and you will be just fine.
The interactions with the animals are fun and educational. The critters are very friendly. If you want, you can let the animals eat out of your hand. If you are hesitant to do that, don't worry; you can enjoy watching the animals eat out of your neighbor's hand. Take the time to stroll the trail marked "the long way"; it's not long since you can see the whole loop.
Our favorite animals were the parakeets, the iguana, the camels, the kangaroos, the rheas, and many more. We particularly enjoyed the okapi (part horse, part giraffe, part zebra).

you get to feed, see, and or pet such a variety of critters! Great fun. You buy a cup of feed and make your way around the park. They are in large fenced enclosures not cages. If you take feed into the goat area be prepared to be very popular! They have a bouncy house, swings, and you can ride a donkey or a camel.

My kids love to come here! Although this is the second time we've been here, the amenities still needs improvement. But kids just love the idea of them petting the animals. More variety / choices in choices would need to be upgraded. Summer is the best time to come over and see the animals.

The place isn't the epitome of perfection. Looking at the currents reviews I can tell people skip out on the ethical angle of "petting zoos". And that is fine, but I personally do.

Critter Lane is not perfect. I noticed several questionable situations which kind of made me a bit concerned. The lack of staff in entrenched among the visitors (outside of the barn) feels like a bad idea. I noticed people inside the petting enclosure messing with the animals a bit roughly. Pushing, smacking away and allowing their kids to pull on and grab at them (which were not being attended to). I didn't notice anyone around keeping an eye on things which would've been a good idea. That way they could've dished out a few "reminders" to guests.

I also noticed one of the goats getting its head stuck through the feeding hole. Luckily another person helped it back out. As well as a goat stuck inside the feeder rack (I didn't see any staff to even notify) and one under part of the fence.

There are three barns with animals inside to see, one reptile house and another "random" animal exhibit. The reptile house was vacant for the most part (again no staff) but luckily everything inside was enclosed. A few other places I had been to have staff on hand to answer questions about the animals, which would've been nice.

The second barn was stuffed full of bunnies, ferrets, birds etc. And actually staff, one of the girls was carrying around a baby kangaroo which was neat. That barn was pretty cool, however (and this is something small) my kids noted the deer head on the wall over looking the animals. And my youngest mentioned it was to scare them all from trying to escape. Again that's not a big deal but was kind of off putting as the place had a ton of deer, including some we fed inside the petting enclosure.

The third barn was full of parakeets, you could walk in and have them fly around you, but we didn't go inside.

There are two small walking areas, one that takes you around a longer way which obviously takes you near more animals (including rams and sheep). I felt a bit bad for the sheep as it's coat was getting matted and it wanted scratched instead of food.

Each enclosure like many places is a wasteland. All dirt, rocks and a few small shelters. That is normal even at large Zoos though, however some effort could be made to make it look a bit more welcoming. The largest center area for instance lacked trees, it was pretty much an acre sized dirt parking lot. The Ram area father down was almost all shade trees. I get deer can destroy them but barriers could've been put around them. It would help a lot, and provide more shade in the summer.

There also is a gift shop, it's small but most things inside weren't overly expensive. And a set of bathrooms accessible by the picnic tables. Which were actually very clean, a surprise for these kind of places. Various hand sanitizing stations were setup around also (which is great).

Side Note: Feed is an additional cost outside of admission. Which wasn't much and you got a big enough cup of food to feed a ton of animals. Refills were cheap as well. I am not sure if you can keep the cup, we didn't but you might want to ask (it has a logo on it).

Overall if your into petting zoo's its not a bad one and if your in the area worth a stop in. I am not an "animal activist" but I still feel petting zoo's in general can be a bit dis-concerning to some.

But I also wouldn't say it garners a perfect score, it does need a bit more staff and some extra TLC on the open area's.

I was there today with my 3 year old great grand daughter and daughter and son-in-law and we had a good time. She got to ride the camel. It's still a neat place. I hadn't been there since my grand kids were kids so that's been about ten years. I like it that kids get to interact with animals without having to go all the way up to St. Louis to the zoo. It's all walking but they have wagons you can use to pull your kids. They do have a "train" ride that is just carts pulled by a tractor. They also have a bouncy house and a swing ride. The camels and kangaroos were the neat animals. They also have lambs, cows, goats, donkeys, a pony, chickens, lizards, snake, and birds. A few other smaller exotic animals.
