Really a 3.5 (good), but I'll help the average. Not probably what you'd expect in Billings - it's basically a contemporary art museum with a bit of social commentary and several interesting pieces. Not the best use of space - lots closed off and empty, a large underutilized interior courtyard, side gallery dedicated to school kid projects and some uninspired photography. That said, there are some interesting pieces, there was a pianist noodling around with original composition (I enjoyed some of his stuff) and I suspect displays rotate, so this is the kind of place you may find surprises. It's a change of pace and on a 5 day trip hitting all sorts of sites, it made a decent end of day stop (extended hours)

This museum is a beautiful space, with interesting and nicely displayed art exhibits. It also has a cute cafe and a nice little museum store. Highly recommend a visit!

Excellent small museum. Great collection of local Montana artists and a showcase for young up and coming artists. Great special exit galleries. Be sure to catch the Barbara Van Cleve photography exhibit, simply marvelous. Small cafe on site and a small museum store.

There was very little in this museum to keep me interested. There was nothing to do with historical art, or even Native American art.

It’s a beautiful building. A cute cafe inside with decent food.
Having said that it’s a puzzle why this huge building appears to be empty of art, especially Montana art. Have not seen in three visits a Charlie Russel painting, a Mark Ogle painting, Joe Abbrescia, Thomas Moran, to name just a few. Haven’t seen a print of any Montana greats let alone originals. It’s a puzzle in such a large museum, it appears empty of serious art. Would think they could borrow art if they don’t have a large cash budget.

Definitely worth a stop when you're in Billings. It's downtown on the main street leading to and from the airport, so very easy to access. A wide range of art from traditional western to some wonderfully innovative modern art and installations that are wide open to interpretation. We enjoyed our visit.

I'm not typically much into art museums even though I've been to more than a few major ones. So I was hesitant but it was a rainy day so we drifted in. And I have to say that I loved the exhibits! I believe it was the work of Sean Chandler and Jesse Albrect but it was engaging and thought provoking. It was a memorable afternoon well worth the small entrance fee and time.

I enjoy the photography exhibits on Montana history and the cowboy (Western) Art exhibits, especially of Montana artists. All the other "modern" art isn't to my taste. Nice people though. I'm glad for the opportunity.

Easy parking & friendly staff. They were setting up new displays upstairs the day we visited. Meaning we only visited the lower level. Which had fabulous art in my opinion.
There is a local artists work gift shop with some very exciting pieces displayed and reasonably priced!
Go, you won't be disappointed even if you can only see 1/2 of it.
