What a unique, beautiful park! We did some of the hikes in the hot hot heat. Make sure to bring plenty of water, especially in the summer! Some of the shorter hikes are still kind of hard. The terrain is rugged, but the park is gorgeous.

For some reason, Tripadvisor does not list Glendisaurus as something to see and do! So I will attach photos below - cutest dinosaur ever!!!! Ask for directions outside of town to Hollecker Lake and s/he is right there waiting to greet you - Google maps took us downtown and the sculpture is not there. Makoshika State Park was beautiful - you can drive through it and see a lot or get out and do short walks and hikes if it is too hot to do a long hike. The young people working there were kind and told us about several short hikes we could take our dog on!

The Center staff had not hiked the trails and sent us onward showing us a map and telling us a trail was short and easy when almost 2 hours later it was most certainly difficult!
This was our last day outing of a 9 day trip and we wanted to make the most of our limited time. We received bad advice. We did create a family memory, but we would have liked to enjoy our hike.
The Park is beautiful.

Its well worth having a look around Makoshika state park. Its Montana's mini badlands. $8 for the car is good value, stop and pay at the visitor centre. The scenic road will give you some fab views. Lots of walks to but take water as it gets very hot. What is also lovely is there are no huge crowds.

This is a beautiful state park with some fun trails. I drove over from North Dakota while on a trip to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and it was worth the drive. Some of the trails do need more maintenance. The biggest challenge was that the road to the best trails was closed (I have no idea why - maybe they close it seasonally? Road was dry and in good shape with no construction) which meant I had to hike the steep mile up the road before I could really start hiking. I can only do so many miles in a day, and only had so much time before dark, so the hike up and then back down (came down the switchback trail) plus in between trails really interfered with my plans. However, I still enjoyed my visit and got to see really neat things.

On our whirlwind MT Dinosaur Trail, we only had time to stop for a visit at the Welcome Center. The center was great with a lot more exhibits than we expected. Friendly park staff; clean bathroom. Would love to go back some day!

Wonderful State Park ! Boondocking campsites, but nicely spaced apart for privacy. Lots of hiking trails — but take a map or use a downloaded app to stay on them. Not well marked. Nice Scenic Drive up to the top elevation of the park. Nice visitor center and a tough - looking disc golf course. Loved our time here, nice restaurants in town, friendly people!

This at one time was considered for a national park. Beautiful scenery. Not much in the way of crowd. Wonderful hikes. But just doing the short drive through the park is worth it. The museum isn’t much but the scenery is worth the time.

Get ready to spend the day walking various trails and taking in incredible views. What a treasure this place is in the state of Montana.

I have witnessed small, lap dogs in the Interpretive center. But they were being held by their owners. I doubt a large dog would be very welcomed in the interpretive center among all the nice displays. Here in Montana though, the outdoors are a pets paradise. But yes, you will have to be concerned about our prickly pear cactus, ticks, and large predators on the west side of the state as previously mentioned. The ticks and the cactus are probably your biggest worry in eastern Montana. Come and enjoy!

The lat. long. for the aforementioned ATV riding area is 46.993996, -104.742112 There are literally a 100 different trails to ride some technical and some not so technical. Great views of the Yellowstone River and its badlands. Enjoy!!!

Hiking and driving: The park can generally be visited with a vehicle. Upon entering from Glendive, the road is paved, and as you drive up into the hills, the road becomes gravel, and, finally, a dirt road, which can frequently be closed due to rain. Hiking on the road is what most campers do, with the hills being steep but the roads and trails are well-maintained.
The "badlands" views from the road are great. Be aware that off-road and trails may have rattlesnakes, and it is sunny, so stay covered. If you go, be sure to make it to the amphitheater.... a great place to observe the park.... and a starting point for a serious hike into a strange part of our planet.
