When passing through this very remote area, it's a good place for a stop. The exposed shale is completely picked over, so you may want a rock bar or something to get at fresh shale. There's very little shade, so it's pretty brutal in the summer. There are some attractive joshua trees--this is as far north as they get. We didn't find anything with our rock hammer, but I would return with heavier tools.

This is a BLM spot about a dozen miles south of Caliente on highway 93 - easy to find, there is a prominent road sign. The road to the dig site is sand and gravel, but easy to travel with a standard vehicle. Take water and snacks - there are no facilities here, just a parking area. If you plan to actively look for fossils, take along proper tools. You will see plenty of evidence of previous digs, but with a little effort and proper tools you can uncover slabs of shale and you may find some instance trilobites. I just found broken pieces, but thoroughly enjoyed the visit. I took along a camera and got quite a few pictures of desert wildlife. Best to go in the Spring or Fall when it is not too hot, and certainly wear comfortable hiking shoes, The dig area is about a quarter of a mile from the parking area. You are not out in the middle of nowhere - it is less than a mile off of Highway 93. It obviously gets visitors from all of the evidence of previous digs, but I saw no one there when I went. Unless you take digging tools and gloves with you, it is unlikely you are going to find any quality fossils just lying around. Enjoy!

We stumbled across this little BLM park a couple of years ago and wandered around, not knowing anything about what we were looking at or looking for.
This time we came back with the specific intention of spending some time here with a couple of rock hammers (a flat heat screwdriver would have been handy) to search for
TRILOBITES.
We stayed in Caliente and ventured out west 12miles to the park. short drive off of the main road and a short walk to the shale.
One of the reviews here felt that it didn't meet her expectations. Well, that's what happens when you don't read the readerboard at the trailhead. This is little stuff - maybe bits and pieces of 500 million year old life. You have to get down on your hands and knees and have good side-lighting to have the story unfold. A lot of people seem to dig and pry loose chunks of shale (and seemingly they didn't bring the tools to split them apart - a REALLY easy process). Even without a tool, you can find lots of heads, and thoraxes, and sometimes a full trilobite - though it will be encased in stone. You have to look. They may only be a half inch across and a half inch long. They are lying on the ground in the rocks that others have thrown away.
Your kids may be bored out of their minds but the thrill of opening up a piece of shale that was laid down 500 million years ago is just amazing. Look at the pictures i've attached. I could spend days here and i'm not a rock hound.

I had a friend tell me about this place and decided to give this try. It's about 12 miles outside of Caliente, NV on the RHS of the road. Well marked and can't miss it. Down a dirt road for a 1/4 of a mile and into a parking area. You take the dirt path for about a 1/2 mile and you come to the trilobite area. Trilobites were formed when the ocean floor dried up - the mud turned to shale and captured the trilobites. The area is pretty well pick over - you probably won't fine anything lying around. You need to have a mason's hammer with a sharp end on it. You find a piece of shale and use the hammer to split the shale. It splits pretty easily - this was my first time. A dirt road winds many, many shale deposits . You have to find which shale you like and start splitting.
I was there and found two fossils - one partial trilobite and one perfect plant.
Warning - going in the morning or early evening - it can get really hot here. And wear gloves; the shale can be sharp.

We spent a couple of hours. Even with the proper tools, we found very little. Just small traces and not even one full fossil. Don't go with high hopes. We did and left with disappointment.

We were just driving by and noticed the sign. We didn't have any tools but we used the rocks around us. We found a couple pieces. It was a lot of fun. I think kids would really enjoy it too.

The area is located 13 miles west of Caliente, there is a sign so you won't miss it. The parking area is large, no restrooms or water, but has 2 picnic tables. It was very hot, 100 degrees! We didn't stay very long. We found some broken trilobites and a few small whole ones. I am glad for this site which gave us a look into the ancient past geology of the area, 500 millions years worth when this area was a sea. Bring water, hat, screwdriver or chisel pick, and a bag for your treasures.

11 miles west on US 93 with a sign to mark the dirt road turnoff - ok for autos. A shale area where known discoveries of fossils has occurred. This is do-it-yourself treasure hunting for which rock hammers or hand sledges are very useful. Break shale or rock and look for fossils! It is encouraged to take them with you if you are lucky enough. Just searching without breaking can work, but probably a better chance to split the shale pieces. It is marked but there are no facilities except parking.
