2 loose German shepherds attacked my dog
They are in a local jeep group and frequent the area.
Watch out so many people don't leash their dogs .
These people never put the dogs on a leash after the attack. There are dangerous people in these woods

It is a great destination for people who like to walk. We enjoyed countless hikes here through the years. The trail network is quite good, well marked and interesting. The camping conditions are simple and they could use some upgrades. Day-trippers find the Batsto Village parking lot and the visiting center the most convenient starting point. Those who walk the locally famous 50+ mile long Batona trail usually just transit through Batsto.
During the blueberry season entire trails are lined with high and low blueberry bushes heavy with delicious bluberries. I call them "the antioxidant trails" .

When I drove down to Wharton from Central New Jersey it felt like I entered a completely different state. It’s worth checking out, and I see why this park would be a hot spot for ATV riding. Unpaved sand roads are a plenty. Be careful if you try taking your vehicle on a sand road, I tried it once and almost got stuck in a small but deep pond. Fun place worth a visit.

The state forest is of a good size with lake and hiking trails around a lake. It is good for a leisure afternoon walk.

Whether you are exploring Batsto village or out on the water with canoes, kayaks or tubes, this area of NJ is a welcome relief from suburbia and crowded beaches. There are countless access areas along the rivers to customize your river journey as you like. Or you can sign up with any of the many outfitters in the area and they will take care of everything for you.

If you enjoy "primitive" camp, this is thee spot!!! No one around,no one on top of your area, peaceful, quiet. If you are a "Glamper",stay away! No flushing toilets,no stores to run to if you forgot siracha sauce, and No outlets for your IPhones. This is a gorgeous area for the true outdoors person. It is a good area for large groups but please,Let's Not Forget to LEAVE NO TRACE so we can continue to enjoy nature . Bodine Camp is awesome. Get out,Get dirty, clean your soul!

I haven't seen a review since 2017 and that should have been my first clue. Let me start by saying the check in area was nearly 12 miles away from the site. At the site there were no bathrooms. One outhouse which smelled like death for the entire camp site. I would say there had to be about 60 people using one outhouse NO FLUSHING! Ewwwwwwwwwwwww
Camp sites were one on top of the other. There were no clearly marked roads and several cars got stuck in the sand area, one car even drove through our site during the night. Luckily we werent run over.
There were no picnic tables either. If you didnt have a table and/or chair you stood all weekend.
The road leading to the actual site was full of twists and turns and we nearly smashed into a tree coming out of a turn doing about 20 mph.
The police patrolled at 730 pm, 930 and then 1130.
THERE WAS NO INTERNET, CELLULAR SERVICE.
That didnt bother me but the fact that if there was an emergency there was no way to contact police was pretty alarming.
I honestly didnt think the mosquitos or bug situation was bad. There was a questionable tick but didnt see much more than spiders and ants.
The lake/beach area also 12 miles away was really nice. You could rent a paddle board, canoe or kayak for a reasonable fee.
We will not be back because of the unkempt roads, no running water. (Hey if you want only port a potties ok but put enough to be sanitary for the 60 or so people you jam in on top of each other.) and no way to reach the outside world in an emergency.

We stopped at the Visitors Center prior to touring nearby Batsto Village. This is where you should stop if you are looking for information on canoeing, hiking trails, mountain biking and camping. Take the time to visit the displays in the museum to learn about the nearby Batsto Village’s history. Exhibits show the growth of the village and surrounding natural resources. I learned the quilt on display dates back to 1865. The library has a collection of books relative to south Jersey history iron making, glass production and Pine Barrens known got its sandy and nutrient-lacking soil. There is a gift shop for those looking for souvenirs. Pick up a brochure here prior to visiting the village. Those who choose to camp in the area may pick up registration forms. Clean restrooms are available too. The center is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm daily.

I never had such nice experience with police like in the Wharton state forest with park police. Very professional people were friendly and helpful when I and my friend lost in the Wharton and had no idea where is our vehicle. Two officers came to help us and did it fast and easy, as a result of the training they had before. Thank you, guys.

The trip was great honestly. Beautiful, secluded, minimalistic grounds deep in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. I say minimalistic to set the expectation that if you're expecting a place with running water, showers, or anything outside of a potable water well, you're going to be displeased.
Awesome hiking trails, swimming lake, everything you would expect from your typical camping site. Also having campgrounds specific to groups, singles, children-centric was huge for us. The one issue that we did have, if you look closely, the ground is littered with extremely old screws and nails in a dog-friendly area (legitimately in the hundreds in a 5ft x 5ft area). As we went through the rest of the park, we realized it wasn't specific only to our lot. Although they were old and nobody really had any issue, they still were covered in rust and potentially could be a very dangerous hazard, especially for children and dogs.
Outside of that, great trip and would still recommend. Just something they need to focus on to improve the safety of their guests.

Hi I have two older hounds who love to walk is it ok to have them off leash? Most parks are so strict about this and I rent a car, drive a distance just to have them on a leash as I could at home. It's sad that there are nearly no state parks allowing dogs to walk at their own pace (which is never as slowly as human pace!) Is this park worth a try?

Yes, I mean Mullica River Trail, sorry about that! Thanks so much! It looks like I would be able to get to Atsion ranger station/recreation area easily from the main road (206). Is that easy, paved road? We are fine with trails that are not well blazed as long as markers are easy to track. I've never been here before, and I don't know anyone who has, so I want to be prepared. We were hoping to be at a campsite that isn't really crowded, which is partially why we decided on the Mullica River trail/campsite. It looks like you can pick it up from either Atsion or Batona, but I worry about driving my car on anything that might be an issue as I have a very small, light car. Is either starting point fine or would you recommend one over another? And with the campsites being "primitive" does that mean there is not a fire ring? Also, I'm glad about the possibility of swimming in the river! Sounds fun! Thank you so much for all of your help!

The Atsion ranger station is on the highway. You pull in the driveway right from 206. It's a dirt parking lot but any car would be able to pull in.

Your comment has been really helpful! My best friend and I are going to hike in and camp over the summer. We wanted to hike the Mullica Hill trail, but it seems there are two different places one could park and begin hiking from. Which parking place would you recommend? Also, what level hike would you say the trail is? Should we be expecting a paved road or more back woods hiking? Do you also know if we would be able to swim in the water at the Mullica Hill campsite?

I'm not familiar with the Mullica Hill trail- I've ben on the Mullica River trail, perhaps you mean that? Either way, none of the trails in Wharton are paved, I would expect it is sand, most likely occasionally it'll actually meet up with a sandroad and you'll walk on that for a bit. None of the trails in Wharton that I've been on are super well blazed, so keep that in mind, but they are usually still easy to follow. The terrain in Wharton is very very mild so I would expect a pretty easy hike- but expect to travel a bit slower than usual since you'll probably be walking on sand. Since I'm not sure what trail you mean, I cannot recommend a starting point.
I've only camped at Godfrey and Batona, so not sure what Mullica River campground would be like (I assume you mean Mullica River campground because as far as I can tell there is no Mullica Hill campground besides a Quaker Friends School summer camp). If it's like the rest of Wharton you should be able to swim in the river. I would recommend researching the route in to the campground for your car ahead of time if you only have 2 wheel drive. Frequently to get to the campgrounds in Wharton you'll have to drive down sandroads that are sometimes soft and deep. I do it in rental cars, usually without problem.
