If you go to the sterling hill mining museum, this museum won’t have a ton to add, but it’s very cheap and old school and has a lot of cool minerals. They also have their own fluorescent minerals room.
To see the museum at sterling hill, you have to take the two hour mine tour, so this spot is an option if you want to see some glowing rocks in less time.
They have a replica mine you can see, but it’s nowhere near as impressive the actual sterling hill mine. They have exhibits on local rocks, indigenous artifacts, and fossils.
You can pay an additional fee if you’d like to search for rocks out back in their rock field.
Worth at least a short stop whether you are sterling hill or not, depending on your agenda and how much time you have.

We visited Franklin because Sterling doesn’t permit rock collecting for anyone under 18 years. This is a shame because my 11 year old and I have been collecting for the last 5 years.
Had a great time looking at the exhibits and found some neat minerals in the dump. My child could have spent all day in the dump, but we settled for an hour due to the heat. Fortunately there was a shaded shelter with a table where we left our personal items. In the short time we searched we made incredibly cool finds and would love to go back. They gave me a flyer for night collecting, so be sure to ask if they have anything special going on.
Volunteers were also wonderful.

This is a great place to visit. You MUST join the tour to see the mine and the exhibits museum, otherwise you're limited to the gift shop. The tour is wonderful.
The public tour is at 1pm (if I recall correctly).
When I first looked at this on line, the sparkly phosphorescent rocks kind of turned me off. I thought it would be a hokey display of silly bright colours, with little information to be had. I WAS WRONG.
The tour takes you into the mine, and through a museum of mining technology and geology. It's fascinating. I was there with my wife and father-in-law (95 years old), the terrain is not hard to manage at all. Also there, a tour of, maybe, 5th graders. The kids were loving it, and my F-I-L loved it too. As I did.
Really great facility, and wonderful tour guide. MUST SEE if you're in the area, and even if you have to travel a bit.

The Franklin Mineral Museum is an interesting small museum dealing with the New Jersey Mining industry. The museum I have to admit is stuck in a time warp where I swear it is 1975 there. The signs are still typed with a typewriter.
What is lacks in aesthetics, it makes up in interest in the rock field, history of fossils and Native American art. There are three main galleries, one dedicated to minerals, rocks and gems, the next on fossils of both New Jersey and elsewhere and the next on American Indian art with arrowheads and equipment and then off to the is the Fluorescent room that when they turn off the lights off and turn the infrared lights on it is quite the lightshow.
Near the entrance you can explore the simulated mine shaft where you can crawl and then walk through. It gives you an idea of how the old mine was mined and how the job worked. It is really interesting.
In the back, you can pay to explore for rocks to take home, I walked in the quarry and looked for samples and in the end found three red fluorescent rocks and I thought that was pretty cool. The whole museum including exploring the quarry for stones is about two hours.
You will not be bored here. It really does capture attention.

When a friend suggested a rock museum I was thought ok, it's a way to get out of the heat and learn about the area. I didn't realise that the rocks are naturally fluorescent! It was fascinating to see the displays and fun to then fo and collect some. It's a really simple, basic set up and looks like every other old historic museum run by volunteers but it was great. These 3 adults had a fun time.

Somewhat hard to find, this store and mineral yard is great for kids and adults alike. Their storefront/museum has a lot a go1rgeous stones and gems while out in the back is a huge yard where you can use the pick and bucket they provide to "prospect" your own unique stones and gems. Very relaxed and unusual experience.

You will see a vast array of rocks and minerals found in the North Jersey area, some of which are not found anywhere else. Museum has florescent minerals and you can dig your own collection in the mineral dump out back. A great destination for anyone interested in geology.

My husband and I were in the area for a wedding and had some time to explore. This little museum is chock full of information and specimens. The fluorescent room is super cool! Everyone was SO friendly and helpful! We even got to hold dinosaur poop!

The tour guide was amazing and pointed out the most awesome looking rocks. He gave great information about the mining process. Florescent room is out of this world.
