Beautiful, well flowing falls tower above the road. There is a maintained stepped path to the top wit two viewing areas . A hidden gem.

Buttermilk Falls, at over 80 feet, is one of the highest waterfalls in New Jersey. In the past, you could drive right to the waterfall, but Mountain Road is currently closed and the parking area and trail are under construction. To visit when Mountain Road is closed (normally closed in winter), park near the Walpack Cemetery and hike about 2 miles down gated Mountain Road. Although a little long, its an easy hike on a gravel road. The waterfall is beautiful but try to visit after a heavy rain so it will look its best. Definitely worth a visit if in the area.

Drove there to find out the road is closed to the falls. So disappointed. You can walk in though. Bring seniors we couldn’t do the long walk.

These falls are right off the road and beautiful. Definitely a must see if your are in the area. The stream is beautiful to walk around.

It is worth the trip through the pitted and pot-holed road to see one of the tallest waterfalls in New Jersey. The parking lot is across from the waterfalls. There are steps that lead to the top of the falls (over 140 steps).
I decided to hike uphill along the Buttermilk Falls Trail (blue blazes) to where it connects with part of the Appalachian Trail. Just be careful as there are rocks and boulders near the top of the Trail and depend on weather can be slippery.
Happy trails and enjoy the beauty of nature if you do go see Buttermilk Falls.

Off the road, back on a dirt gravel road with some potholes. No special vehicle required, just take your time. We had a rental car, not a jeep! Beautiful falls right of the parking area, has steep stairs that take you up to the top for more viewing. Give yourself about an hour. Nice stop, beautiful slender falls.

We went to the falls in 2018, for the first time since I was a boy. The falls themselves were as nice as I remembered, however NJ does NOT take decent care of their roads in the"State Forest". If the would just ran a road grader through there once in awhile you wouldn't jar your kidneys to death; or knock you vehicle out of alignment! Note It was in August of 2018, not 2019.

We asked some local people what we shouldn't miss while visiting this area and they highly recommended Buttermilk Falls. We went there after a dry spell and the unpaved dirt road was so bumpy and filled with large, deep holes, that we almost turned back. When we got to the parking lot at the bottom of the Falls, we were surprised to see so many people there. They told us that due to a long lack of rain, the Falls weren't quite as impressive as they usually are, but that they are still worth going to see. We heard that it is a great place to hike up to the top of the Falls, or you can even drive further down the road to another road that led up to the top where there was another parking lot. We didn't bother doing this since the road wasn't in very good shape. However, we did return to the Buttermilk Falls one more time to show our friends, but they also didn't think it was worth the bumpy ride to go any further then the first parking lot. The locals seem to love going there, so maybe we should have gone up to the top to see the view instead of just writing it off. Heavy rain may make the Falls more spectacular, but it will also hide the big holes in the road and make the road a sea of mud!

DO NOT GO UNLESS YOU DRIVE AN AWD/4WD VEHICLE WITH CLEARANCE! HORRIBLE DEEP POTHOLES ON MOUNTAIN ROAD (BOTH SIDES)! Shocking that the park service has let the road deteriorate to such a DANGEROUS CONDITION! Who is running this place?! It would be easy to fill in these dangerous holes! Thought we were on the surface of the moon- car bottomed out. Also, there is virtually NO SIGNAGE, and your GPS may not work! Yes, the falls are gorgeous, but NOT worth going through this. You're better off crossing the Delaware and going to Dingmans Falls, Raymondskill Falls and/or Bushkill Falls.
