Nestled in the heart of downtown New Brunswick, NJ, Monument Square Park is a vibrant public space that serves as a historical landmark and a communal gathering spot.

Since 1894, a small triangular plot of land in the City Center has been home to a monument honoring the thousands of lives lost in the American Civil War. Located at the heart of New Brunswick's Theater District, Monument Square serves as a centerpiece for the City Center, beautifully framed by the Heldrich Hotel, theaters, and popular restaurants.

New Brunswick's Holiday Tree Lighting, New Year's Eve Fireworks, and the Central Jersey Jazz Festival are just a few of the popular community events held at Monument Square.

I would suggest reading what the board says, it describes the history and is it fascinating. It mentions, that the 3rd public reading of Independence took place by Col Nelson.

Pretty awesome! A bit windy today, but the sun was warm making it an ideal quick visit. Hard time finding parking, but it’s Sunday and people were going to church. Will visit again in the Spring.

Along with the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University, the Zimmerli Art Museum, and the historic Johnson and Johnson building, this is one and site that is likely to appear on a visitor’s checklist. It’s a tiny triangular piece of park in front of the Heldrich Hotel, and you can probably see the whole thing is a couple of quick glances. But it deserves a wider inspection, and even if you are not interested in its monument and statue, its a pleasant spot to just sit awhile (even though there are no shade trees if you’re visiting in the height of summer).

Since 1894, this small triangular plot of land has been home to a monument honouring the thousands of lives lost in the American Civil War - the ‘War of the Rebellion’ as is stated on the monument. It’s the centrepiece of this little park. At the entrance to the park where George Street meets Livingston Avenue, there’s a statue of Colonel John Neilson (1745 -1833). He commanded the New Jersey militia in the northern part of the state during the American Revolution, and was one of the earliest trustees of Rutgers University. He was born at Rarity Landing, a historical community that was located just across the Rarity River from New Brunswick,

There’s also a curious signpost indicating mileage and directions to a number of places, such as Debrecen in Hungary, Tsuruoka and Fukui in Japan, and Limerick County in Ireland. These are the designated ‘sister cities’ of New Brunswick. There’s also a plaque indicating the location of a time capsule which was placed there in 1982, to be opened in 2082 when the city celebrates its 400th birthday. On a rock you'll also find a plaque which indicates the former location of some historic buildings associated with Rutgers University.

For the most part, its just a pleasant spot to sit awhile and take a break. It’s at the junction of George Street and Livingston Avenue, close to the city’s theatre district, and a very short walk from the shops and cafes on George Street. Just head for the Heldrich Hotel (you can’t miss it), and you’re there.

This is a great small park. While there is not much here, its still safe to walk around. There is a hotel and restaurant there only, but its still good for a bite to eat or to stay over. Most people stay at the Heildrich Hotel, and the restaurant in the hotel Christopher's is also there. I have heard negative things about that restaurant. If you want something more of an expansion, try George St., which is next door, and Easton Ave.

A monument and fountain located in front of the Heldrich hotel in the theater district, soon to house the George Street Playhouse and the Crossroads theater in a brand new building, is a nice area to visit and take in the surroundings which will be much improved and quieter when the theater building is completed. The monument was erected in 1893 and dedicated to the people who fought in the Revolutionary War.

Хорошо можно погулять в этом парке. Большой и интересный сквер в окружении старинных зданий. Берите детей и кушайте на траве.

Hard to think of this area as a park but it is a very nice spot in the center of the noisy city, a bit of an escape I guess.....

Not a real park but kind of the center of town: 3 theaters right next to it (State Theater, George Street Theater, and Crossroads Theater), 2 restaurants at the square, and going West we have George Street with many more different restaurants, all within walking distance. Parking is nearby, so on New Street. The Heldrich Hotel faces the square.
