Interesting section of Newark with several fantastic Portuguese restaurants and bakeries. We loved the people we met - it was like being in Portugal.

Ironbound is amazing. The place has this cool, cozy feel with brick walls and all. The food? Seriously good. They've got everything from killer steaks to tasty veggie stuff. Plus, the staff is super chill. It's become my go-to spot for a laid-back, delicious meal. Check it out!

I went to the neighborhood on Fillmore Street that my mother grew up on. I was surprised that I wanted to visit this area because I barely remember it. I was drawn back there for some reason that I still haven’t quite figured out. My friend and I walked up and down the street and I found Mother’s old home, the neighborhood isn’t the best but it’s definitely not the worst and it looks like people coexist quite well. Afterwords we went to River front and riverbank park on the Passaic River . There was a nice playground for children with lots of playground equipment plus soccer field ,basketball, and tennis courts. You can walk along the bank and look across to the Red Bull Arena.
We finished the day with a trip to the Coimbra restaurant. I have never had Portuguese food, so it was a learning experience for me. Everything we had was delicious and the service was impeccable. We had tuna belly, oxtails, and we took home several more dishes for our family. I don’t have any other Portuguese restaurants to compare this to, but I really liked it and they were quite helpful in selecting some dishes that would give us a taste for different aspects of Portuguese cuisine.

What I love about the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ is exploring the neighborhood for restaurants and bakeries that line Ferry Street and the surrounding streets. There is always something to see and do in the neighborhood and a bevy of interesting cafes and bakeries to try.
The only bad part is the parking can be difficult on a nice day. The whole area can be a mob scene.

After we had a meal nearby we decided to walk along Ferry street and realized there are many good restaurants and shops here. We spent a good 30 minutes walking around and think we should come back here to experience different kinds of food here.

There aren’t a lot of English speaking people here but the restaurants and delis are good. You can find Portuguese pastries and unique foods. It’s not as comfortable to walk at night.

This is the place to experience either Portuguese Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese life in America. There are tons of mom and pop shops and ethnic Portuguese Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese restaurants, bakeries, and all the other amenities of being Portuguese in America. This is a very unique and special place. Crime is almost non-existent in this neighborhood. Everybody knows everybody in this neighborhood. You will not have a problem here. Instead, you will have a really good time in a very unique place not ten minutes drive after getting off I-85. Have fun!

There's a lot of good Portuguese and Brazilian food here along Ferry St. and the side streets. It's a walk around in neighborhood. Lots of good shops for clothing. A few very nice houseware stores and gift shops. Lots of mobile phone stores. Very close to Penn Station. The only thing I noticed way more than once is if your not Brazilian or Portuguese you are kinda treated differently. My boyfriend is PuertoRican and I am Caucasian and we go out to eat here often and we are very friendly to people. We say hello to folks that pass us while we are walking around Ironbound and a lot of the time people say nothing and look the other way. Some of the restaurants we get treated like we don't really belong there. The supermarkets they basically ignore us in the deli or butcher section because they start speaking to the people that speak portuguese instead. Of course not everyone is like this but when you feel it most places you visit-it makes us not really want to visit again. And we love Portuguese and Brazilian food. We are very clean cut people and dress really nice when we go out so its not that. I wish everyone would be as nice to others as they are their own.

In the past, we have eaten in a number of great places here. It is the best Portuguese food west of Portugal! We did not eat this time, but any place that is still in business here is going to be good. Look for one that has a "full house" and make a reservation!

Have 4 hours to kill between flights (allowing time to get to gates, etc.) at EWR. Is there a quick & easy way to get to Ironbound neighborhood?

Well it depends the time of your arrival and departure if it is day or night and if you are really have four hours to spare.To get to Ironbound with taxi round trip is about 1/2 an hour and will cost you about $50.00.So maybe you got about 2 hours to spend there but you have to know in advance where you want to go so the driver can bring you direct to your place that you want to go for food or whatever you want to see.Good luck and i hope i gave you some input on your question.

I had it once and I thought it tasted like brandy.
Would you know, or know someone who might know where to buy it?

The national drink of Brazil is the Caipirnha which contains Cachaca. It's a clear liquor and strong. The drink is very good.
