It was a nice evening for a walk up the hill to see this beautiful cathedral.
A very nice lady let me go in even though the sign showed only open to 5 pm on Monday. I got there at 6 pm

This is a work of art; as cathedrals go. It is a very valid cathedral; big vaulted ceiling, large stained glass windows, great organ. It's next to a large beautiful park with cherry blossoms that equal Washington dc.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Basilica is a magnificent church built in a splendid French Gothic style. The striking interior is filled with beautiful sculptures, carvings, mosaics, and stained glass, including three gorgeous rose windows.
It's one of the largest cathedrals in the country, and you immediately feel a sense of awe when you walk in. Outside of mass, you can visit the basilica by checking in at the rectory (89 Ridge Street). The staff is very welcoming. Definitely worth a visit!

it is one of the nicest Catholic diocesan cathedrals that I have ever been to, and I have been to several Catholic diocesan cathedrals here in the US. Massive and absolutely beautiful.

One of the bigger churches in the east. Nice windows. If it is cherry blossom time, drive through the park next to the church.

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.My husband and I went for a church visit on Good Friday .We were still wary about crowds so we went before the scheduled services.Parking was not an issue.Entry was thru a side door.The interior was gorgeous but subdued .Whether you are religious or not,you will appreciate this stunning Gothic French architectural gem in North America.

Wow, that is all I can say. Absolutely beautiful and so huge!!!! Reminders me of the Cathedrals that you see in Europe. Unfortunately when I was there you could not enter.

Each time you enter this cathedral feels like the first. It's stunning and beautiful and mystical. You can wander around and discover the huge interior and let your soul ascend. Yet going there for mass or just to sit also feels warm and intimate. Its friendly and everyone feels at their best. The purpose of a cathedral is to soar and let in the light and be a total experience of soul and church and christ consciousness. We love visiting the cathedral and surroundings. It's inspiring and all about community..

This building is the fifth largest cathedral in North America, roughly the size of Westminster Abbey, stunningly beautiful, inside and out.
It is 365 feet long and 161 feet wide. The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. It is located at 89 Ridge Street in the Lower Broadway neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey. We were there on a silent quiet day, got the street side parking. We had recently come from the Europe trip and after seeing this, we are like " this church can compete with any famous church in Europe" and it was in the backyard of our county and we were not aware of this.
The cavernous interior is very well maintained and is spotlessly clean. The architecture, the carved wood, the Chandeliers, the stained glass windows, the marble Carvings, the Statues, ornate Doors, and the 14 Mosaics depicting the Stations of the Cross, were all so magnificent that it made our jaws drop. The Altar made of Italian Marble is stunning. It has the largest Pipe Organ which includes 9000 pipes, 54 stops, and is playable from two consoles.
Perfect and exact example of French Gothic architecture in the Western Hemisphere. The Cathedral Basilica is well worth a visit.

Can we go inside on a Sunday afternoon? We tried to do this a few months ago and at 3PM every entrance was locked!

have only gone for an event or concerts. I'm sure for security it's not open all the time. They have tours...call the office at 973-484-4600 to schedule or check their website for concert schedule and information.

Is there a Newark transit bus one could take from Newark Airport to the
Basilica or is a taxi the only way to reach the Basilica ?

NJ Transit reports that the GO28 bus, which leaves from all the terminals at Newark Liberty Airport, goes within 3 blocks of the Basilica, but you'd have to walk from the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Clifton Street along Clifton to reach the Basilica. If you're not comfortable walking around a strange area, then call Lyft or Uber. It's worth your time to visit this wonderful place, however.

What are the days / hours open ? Can you walk in like St. Patrick's Cathedral or do you have to buy tickets ?

You don't have to buy ticket...but normally I always donate a few dollars into the donation box right next to the secretary's window. As for visiting hours...this is the best part...you can visit it any time even when there is no service. A true house of God will never deny anybody from entering...believers or not. But the trick is you must enter from the side street small door entrance. When you get inside where the secretary can see you thru the glass door, ring the door bell she will buzz you in. Once inside, say out loudly "Thank you!"
Then turn right thru the hallway until you turn left then right again to the main Church. If
the lights are not on...you can still see the magnificent church. By the way before you walk around notice the red triangle umbrella with a seat under it? That shows the Pope was there. If you remember your bible, you can recognize a lot of the events such as the camel's head trying to go through the needle? which is on top of one of the entrances in front of the main hall. Good luck? The pillars at the back of the altar were so big it takes three persons to wrap around it with their arms fully stretched! You'll never forget such a beautiful church.
