I went to the Whippany Railway Museum which is a tiny museum off the highway that is dedicated to the history of the NJ Rail system and was totally blown away by the professionalism of the staff and volunteers. These men and women really are dedicated in the visitors learning about how railroad cars operated and their purpose in the golden age of traveling by train.
The museum itself is full of memorabilia dedicated to the rail system from lamps, tickets, posters, station master items, dinnerware from dining on the cars and advertising. All of it was so nicely displayed and organized.
The rail yard is loaded with different types of train cars that you can visit and the day that I was there for the "Pathways to History" event for Morris County, the volunteers who renovate and fix these cars were all outside explaining how they were used.
I took an hour tour with a volunteer named Mike, who was dressed like a conductor and was blown away during the tour with the detail of how these cars were used, how they were fixed and decorated and the time and care that went into the research of each donated rail car. The tour was so professional and detailed that it was one of the better ones of the event.
If you have a real interest in the history of the rail system and the progression of how it developed, this is the museum for you. Try to get on one of the tours if it is offered as it will give you the whole story of the NJ Rail System and who were the people who helped create it.
I ended up spending three hours here fascinated by the cars. Kudos to Mike and the other volunteers who are so dedicated to this museum!

We went for the Fall Harvest Festival and were so excited but once we arrived it was all very underwhelming. If you have a small child gaga for trains I would go once but with low expectations. The fall festival was pretty non existent and the model trains weren’t working. I was expecting more food options and things for kids to do. My least favorite part was the surly conductors that were smoking right in front of the train. We had to endure cigarette smoke with small children and you couldn’t get away from the smell. Also, the train whistles are very loud! Bring headphones for sensitive ears.

We took our young grandson, visiting from out of state, to this museum today, promising him a great time. Alas, the museum was not open although we were there at 1:30 on a Sunday afternoon. A big disappointment for him. I know it is volunteer run and staffed and it is very hard to find people who are willing to take on this type of responsibility so I don't want to judge harshly. There are plenty of old trains to see and we did walk around and view them, so I can't say it was not worth our time to go there. I wish the museum group success and hope they find enough help in the future to open their museum at the scheduled times.

We took our 4 year old for a train ride and experience other activities and he absolutely loved it. The volunteer staff are so helpful, kind and understanding. We will surely be back and it was worth every cent we paid for our visit.

Nettes Museum mit teils skurilen Exponaten. das Gelände ist überschaubar. Der alte Bahnhof sehenswert.

When my kid was young, we went to these tracks often. Just pass by today and bring back tons of fond memory.

We have been here a few times, most recently for the fall festival. There are local vendors and the fall is a lovely time of year to get some homemade craft items.The model trains are fun and my son had a good time. We did not take the train ride, though it looked like a lot of fun.

fun times with the kids. the museum is small but cute. not bad for close to home. The train ride was short but the scenery was nice.

This has always been a favorite with our family and friends. We started coming here for the Santa Train. We'd visit the museum, look at the displays, history and running train sets. Then we'd ride in the caboose (our favorite part of the train) and wait for Santa to come by. Then the Easter Bunny Train was added and we found ourselves adding that to holiday traditions as well. More rides were added over the years, so it rounded out the fun.
SO, be prepared to have thrilled children and happy adults while enjoying a nostalgic train ride and exhibits.

Does the caboose have windows? Taking my 2 yr old on Halloween Express ... Caboose seems like it would be roomier but I want her to be able to see outside ..couldn't tell from the pictures online...Thanks!

The train rides' schedule is posted on the website. It's usually on certain Sundays during the summer season although they do have a few rides during Halloween & Christmas times.

Is there a difference between single car level and double deck car. Which would you prefer?

The Whippany Railway Museum dosn't offer double decker cars on any of its excursions. We do offer a first class accommodation on our vintage parlor car. We do recommend that you purchase tickets well in advance if you would like to experience this unique opportunity
