Excellent walking park where you have to take into account some considerable climbing.
So bring sturdy shoes and sometimes you will walk on narrow paths and climb over tree stumps. To get there you can park at a hotel and then walk a bit along the road. At the hotel you can get directions about the precise location of the entrance.

We initially signed up for a 5 day trail but upon getting there, realised we could do it in 3 days.
The whole three days was quite difficult and worth our while.
The only dissapointment was De Hoek hut - which was said to have hot water, but didn't. Also it was filthy.
The Dokolelwa Hut - beautiful scenery and stream; but we found it to be extremely filthy too, worse than De Hoek even.
Other than that, the trail was properly marked and we enjoyed breathtaking sceneries and forestry!

We visited in April 2021. Despite having booked and received a permit from SAFCOL, when we arrived we were told that the hike is completely overgrown and impassable. We were unable to hike and had to abandon our trip. On top of that, we stayed at De Hoek hut for one night - it is a total mess. Filthy, dirty, water leaking from a broken geyser everywhere and bed bug ridden mattresses. An embarrassment to SAFCOL and the hiking community.

There are a view trails in Magoebaskloof. We did the Dokolewa waterfall trail and slept over in the hut (16 bunk beds) close to the Debegeni waterfall. No accessed by cars. This is so beautiful here with the stream in front of the hut. Loved the Seepsteen Stables as well. Beautiful view from the top. I think to do these trails - winter is better but in summer which is very humid, you can cool down in the streams and that is awesome.

Idyllic surroundings. Well maintained and safe trails. Variety of fauna and flora. Don't miss out on this extreme tourist attraction.

Since my student years this Hiking Trail was on my to-do list and now about 30 years later I had the chance and it was even better than expected. Walking for hours through hundreds years old indigenous forest with old Yellow Wood trees were exceptional. I have walked in forests in Equador, Peru and Malaysia and this hike is still at the top of beauty. Me and my son started at De Hoek and slept the first night at Woodbush hut. The whole day just pure beauty. The second day had some forestry areas and areas where trees were harvested but the beauty of Waterfall Hut, where we had lunch, made up. We slept the second night at Broederstroom Hut. The third day continued to reach De Hoek again and this was by far the most rewarding day.
The Facilities was very clean and more than enough for a hike in nature. This hike and indigenous forests should be declared a World Heretage Site to preserve a place so old and beautiful.

Summary:
1. The Magoebaskloof Trail truly is in paradise – incredibly beautiful streams, indigenous forests, mist, waterfalls, plantations, hut locations, butterflies, ferns, flowers...
2. The level of hiking difficulty can however be tough, and is largely determined by the weather and length of day due to season. In or after rain, significant challenges can be presented by mud, steep gradients and slippery bridges over streams. Humidity in the area can also be high, and if combined with hot weather this can increase the difficulty of the sections not under forest cover. I’ve seen references to some days of this hike being “family-friendly”, which I don’t agree with – unless you have perfect weather and unusually dry ground, I would not apply this label except for keen, able hikers aged > 12yrs.
3. The map we were given at time of reservation (which is apparently the most recent map), and the narrative descriptions of each route, are unfortunately no longer accurate. I suggest reference to the map, but definitely not reliance on it; neither the cross sections, nor the mileages or actual trail markings are up to date. The white footprints on the physical trail are however very good if you follow the trail in the correct direction (and accept that a double footprint doesn’t necessarily mean a change in direction).

General:
1. There are 4 “routes” on this trail (indicated by the 4 numbers in white circles on the map). 1 of these routes is common to both the “3 day” trail and the “2 day” trail. Thus, if you wish to hike for 5 days, you will need to do 1 of the routes twice.
2. We hiked all 4 routes on this trail, over 5 days.
3. All 4 routes are beautiful and varied, yet all are challenging in their own way.
4. We slept at all huts except Broederstroom. We did however walk up to Broederstroom to take a look.

Huts as at April 2018:
1. De Hoek has electricity and hot water.
2. Broederstroom appeared to have electricity (as it had lights) although I can’t confirm regarding hot water.
3. None of the other huts had electricity or hot water.
4. All huts have undercover fireplaces outside, and we arrived to chopped firewood at each hut.
5. All huts have showers, running water and flushing toilets.

Recommendations:
1. Be prepared for rain.
2. Gaters or waterproof pants are worth it for this trail.
3. Be prepared for slippery surfaces – hiking poles and shoes with good grip are invaluable.
4. Follow the trail in the “correct” directions as there are no markings in the opposite directions.
5. Don’t underestimate each day’s mileage – speed on this hike is slower than most hikes due to challenging sections, and due to the incredible beauty that one keeps pausing to appreciate.

This is one of the most beautiful parts of our country, about 4,5 to 5hrs drive from Johannesburg. A group of 12 did the hike, with varying degrees of experience and fitness levels. Two people had never hiked before, one person is a highly experienced multi-day hiker and one person had reached the base camp of Everest. We did the 2 day circular hike from De Hoek Hut to Dokolewa Pools Hut to Seepsteen Mule Stables Hut and back to De Hoek Hut. We arrived on the Friday evening, parked our cars at De Hoek Hut and hiked the 1,5km in the dark to Dokolewa Hut. It was an easy walk. Dokolewa Hut has 2 bedrooms with 4 bunk beds in each bedroom, sleeping 16 people in total. There is a common area with 2 tables and benches. The hut does not have warm water or electricity. There is an undercover braai area with wood provided. Seepsteen Mule Stables Hut also does not have electricity and hot water. There was no running water when we arrived. There was also no wood when we arrived. This arrived much later in the evening. This hut also has 4 bunk beds sleeping 16 people in total. It also has a big common area with 2 tables and benches, as well as an undercover braai area. The hike itself is very beautiful, through indigenous forests and plantations. On the first day there are many stream and river crossings, some with sturdy and safe makeshift wooden bridges and others with precariously slippery makeshift wooden bridges. On Day 1 there is a steady uphill climb which a few of us found extremely challenging and exhausting. A couple of people fell along the way, but no serious injuries. This made it difficult sometimes to enjoy the surroundings. On day 2 we woke up to thick must and light rain. It made for an extremely difficult hike with most of it involving slipsliding in mud and many of the group falling multiple times. In a couple of places we had to wade through the water to cross to the other side, since there weren't any bridges. Much of the hike was downhill which was not easy under these conditions. You should wear good waterproof hiking boots on this hike.
