This workshop/studio is a wonderful example of both community outreach and amazingly creative art using recycled tea-bags, tags, boxes and even the tea. It was a thriving establishment that was devastated by Covid. All the artisans were laid off as the founder was unable to sustain the business. When we stopped by there today (first time visit), three artists had been hired back as of October 1. It is apparently in a much smaller space than before and shares the building with other art exhibitors. I agree that it is impossible to leave without purchasing something in your price range. Beautiful coasters, tea trays, drinking glasses and gift bags to name just a few of the items in the store. Definitely a must visit to support the incredible work being done here and enable more artisans to be re-employed. When you go, take your used teabags and tags, preferably dried out. I was told that they accept and welcome teabags from all over the world and I will be sure to remember that when I return to Cape Town next time. Don't miss this place.

We stopped here by accident, but we were thrilled once we saw this establishment. Amazing to see what the talented women can create out of used tea bags. You will not walk out empty handed, and you'll have a big smile on your face. Fantastic.

Wow! What a special place to visit and to buy unique souvenirs if you like. I was on a bus trip and needed to stretch my legs so I got off of my sightseeing bus near Imizamo Yethu township- when I got off the city bus a local escorted me to the Original T Bag Design showroom. When I arrived I was asked if I wanted to watch the video on the shop and it’s origins and I was also offered a cup of tea/ coffee. The video explained the project well and really left me with a good feeling about how these artisans were learning new skills and earning money to better their lives. I also met the founder Jill Heyes in store and she showed me around the studio, then to the workshop and answered all of my questions about the products, how people get involved and their projects, the designs and the skills learned. The work these artisans do is special sustainable- turning your everyday tea bag or tea labels into amazing art. The work you will see in store ranges in price, but there is something for everyone. I could have bought most things in the store. If you are on the City Sightseeing bus and need a break or want to seek Original T Bag Designs out- get off at stop 23.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post about your trip to Original T-Bag Designs. Thank you for deciding to get off the bus and delighted that you were inspired by what we are doing in hopefully changing lives through sustainable jobs and empowerment. Hoping more visitors on the open top bus will get off and walk the short distance down the road to our production site and visitors center. We pay the town ship guides to bring you...so all very easy!

My wife and I visited for the third time recently. We first came here about 10 years ago.Jill does the most incredible work here to create something sustainable that gives local township people opportunity and work and recycles a product that would otherwise be disposed of without a second thought. The products that are made are of the highest quality and all are relevant and useful in daily life. A trip here is an absolute must for any traveller wanting to support this incredible country.

We took the Hop on, Hop off bus to this wonderful place which was just a short walk up the street from the bus stop. They welcomed us so graciously and showed us a brief video to explain their work. With a cup of tea, of course! Then we had 2 different women give us a tour and answer questions. So very engaging! We were excited to buy a number of souvenirs at the gift shop - cards and pictures and wall hangings. We loved it. Highly recommended!

Eindrucksvoll, wie es die Britin Jill Heyes geschafft hat, mit leeren Teebeuteln 20 Frauen aus dem nahen Township eine berufliche Perspektive zu ermöglichen. Unbedingt vorbeischauen und einkaufen!

This place is inspiring and amazing.
You will be able to get the most unique and beautiful gift from here, something meaningful that tells a story.
The art crafts are beautiful, hand made one by one from the capable hands of the women from Imizamu Yethu township.
This is not the usual gift shop, by stop by and explore and take home a piece, you will be part of a beautiful story that talk about how women from a township work hard to create a better future for themselves and them kids, story of inspiring women that create and support this idea day by day.
We use them crafts for our wedding gifts and now a tea bag is in the house of every one we love, because this project is amazing and worthy.

What an amazing place and a MUST go to .
We were offered tea or coffee whilst we watched a 9 minute video which explains how it all started and how it works . We were then taken on a tour to watch how everything was made and were introduced to all the staff who couldn’t have been more delightful.
Finally we made quite a lot of purchases in the shop as they have some amazing products .

Well worth a stop. There's a short video explaining the history, we met people working there and Gill kindly spent some time giving us a tour. A grass roots business working to empower local people (and achieving this), building and using their skills to make lovely products out of old tea bags...yes tea bags! They were very friendly to our toddler and made us feel extremely welcome.

We were met at the bus stop by an engaging young man employed by the initiative who lives in the township. He chatted easily to us as he lead us the few 100 metres up the road to the Original T-Bag designs workshop. He made us a lovely cup of tea (coffee was also offered) which we enjoyed whilst watching a short video on how this initiative came about. All the 'artists' were so friendly and pleased to share their work and designs with us. Each piece is unique. I landed up buying far too much but it was all stuff that I would use as gifts or take great pleasure in using or admiring myself. Well worth a visit and well worth supporting.
