Visited all 3 Mora Valley mills (La Cueva, St. Vrain and Cleveland) during the Places with a Past tour hosted by the Las Vegas, NM's LVCCHP.
While several historic locations were open for tours on this particular day, my friend and I were excited to see New Mexico's flour mills, built between 1850 to 1873. Fantastic pieces of history being lovingly preserved and restored by local volunteers who are delighted to share their family histories and personal experiences around these mills. The Cleveland Roller Mill was our last stop (and longest stop) on our way back over the Sangre de Christos mountains and back toward home.
Taking in the lush green valley contrasted against the backdrop of the fire damaged pine forests of the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak fires (2022 - largest wild fire in NM history) the area is both breathtaking and bittersweet. The residents and volunteers definitely were most awe-inspiring part of this tour, however. The folks we met are deeply rooted, caring and resilient. In the poorest town, in the poorest county in one of the poorest states in the US, these people shared their passion for their history, culture and their land.
The Cleveland Roller Mill is currently the only operational mill of the 3 but due to the heavily silted runoff (another result of the wildfire) that is foundering the mill race, it was not running during our visit. While seeing the mill in action would have been terrific, talking to the people who are instrumental in the restorations and operations of these big, beautiful giant buildings more than made up for it.
Come to the Mora Valley. Eat authentic northern New Mexican cuisine at Teresa's Tamales, stop by the Mora Valley Ranch & Grocery and do not miss the Cleveland Roller Mill!

Excellent experience. Incredible engineering for the 1870s. Of the 3 mills left in the valley, this is the only one with all the equipment inside, and the only one regularly open to visitors. Very well-informed and pleasant docents. Good selection of pertinent greeting cards. There were portable toilets outside and a food truck. There is a green and shady picnic area beside the mill where you can relax listening to the water in the millrace. Limited hours, but well worth researching their schedule.

30 years ago I had the good fortune to be given a small private tour of the mill before it was restored. I totally enjoyed seeing and hearing (I had been told it was surprisingly quiet and it is! I'm not sure 19 modern machines would run as smoothly) the mill in action. We also loved the arts and crafts fair where we enjoyed meeting and talking to many of the artists.

We drove 25 miles to visit the museum based on the information here on TripAdvisor only to find the place is closed for the season. It’s only open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and then only by appointment, per a notice nailed to the entrance door. We were able to walk around the outside, but with no information about the place, it was just a pretty photo opp. Also, the website link on this listing goes to some Chinese website. Please update the information on this listing so that it’s accurate!!

Met friends from Austin, TX at Millfest, Labor Day week end which is on the grounds of the Museum. The mill is open to the public for self guided tours, but I recommend the guided tour($6.00 fee).
Donna, our guide was a past employee of the mill and provided a very entertaining history of the mill, its owners and the region. Along with farming and nutritional information about wheat (and the by-products used to make animal feed) which fed the soldiers and livestock at the US Army forts that provided protection for the Santa Fe Trail travelers and early residents. Millfest itself is rather small, but with live entertainment, vendor food and local artisan and business selling locally made and grown items.

This little gem of a museum is right off route 518 between the two small historic towns of Cleveland and Mora, NM. Back in the 1800’s the Mora Valley was the “breadbasket” of New Mexico, growing lots of wheat and corn. The Cleveland Roller Mill was one of the few commercial-scale mills in the region. It has been lovingly restored — both the old adobe building and all the original machinery & water wheel — to its original working condition. They actually run the mill once a year in their annual festival! Even better, the Museum features a extensive exhibition of old photographs, historic descriptions, and a video describing the rich history of the Mora Valley. It’s the only place where you can see this history collected & curated in such depth — I learned a lot about the region’s history in just one short visit. Outside there is a lush green park and picnic area, under shady trees, perfect for taking a break from traveling. The woman working at the museum was very friendly, welcoming and full of information — she offered to give me a tour for as long or short a time as I wanted. All this for a $3 entrance fee — well worth a visit!!

I would have never thought that such a small New Mexico town as Cleveland would have such an interesting Museum. In the latter part of the 19th century, the Mora Valley was a big wheat growing region. This Roller Mill was built to process the wheat. What makes this mill interesting is that it has been restored to working order. The river turns the old wooden paddle wheel which provides the energy for the many wooden gears, pulleys, conveyors and belts which drive all the grinders, sifters, elevators, packers, etc. Watching the operation is like watching a symphony of motion. The owner of the Cleveland Roller Mill Museum is a descendant of the Irish immigrant who purchased the Mill in 1913. This is a must visit in Northern New Mexico.

Went for the Labor Day Cleveland Roller Mill Millfest and it was such a great festival! I had randomly seen it on tripadvisor while going to Taos the back way and have to say for a Labor Day family idea this was ideal! The local businesses had great items to sell the food was beyond delicious and there was music the entire time making it a family friendly outing!

This part of northern New Mexico once grew huge amounts of wheat to feed Fort Union and supply the Santa Fe Trail. Mills sprung up throughout the mountains to make flour. This large roller mill with a water wheel on the Mora River has been restored to working order, and they run it during the annual festival on the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Fascinating story, and a great photo op. Plus music, food, and a crafts fair.

I have been to this mill on a couple of occasions. I am not sure if it is open full time but I know that once a year in the fall the mill is open and is running. They sell flour in their little store, and outside they have a festival with live music, foods and craft booths. Plan your trip for this fall event.
