Stopped here on our way along I25 to stretch our legs last May. Was pleasantly surprised. There's a visitor center but it was closed. Several dirt roads to follow. At least one area has primitive campsites, there's enough room to turn a rig around--we had a truck and 24 ft bumper pull. Level campsites with picnic tables and there were a few trees for shade but otherwise windy since there's nothing to block the wind. Lots of wildlife--we saw birds, pronghorn, and prairie dogs. Free to visit. Free to camp. Nobody else around. Stopped again for the night on the next road trip. Will probably stop again.

A beautiful refuge in the middle of nowhere, full of birds, lakes and trees. Note that it's mostly country roads, but still worth the drive.

There are a number of fishing areas in Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge. There are some snakes in the refuge. I don't know what types of snakes.
But even with the snakes people regularly fish and swim in the ponds. It's a beautiful and extensive park.

THE refuge for bird watching! So many different species of birds! Glad I thought to bring my binoculars on my trip, you should too because you’ll need them. They’re are Rattlesnakes, Bullsnakes, ands Prairie Dogs but I saw none.
The highlight was watch a family of Ravens (settled in trees by restroom at camp site entrance) because mom has just recently given birth. Babies are in the nest and she’s constantly attending to them while dad sits sentry two trees away. To hear her coo while feeding them was priceless!
The area is large but due to my car (low clearance) and the conditions of the road I didn’t go to two of the viewing areas.
The campsites are primitive with 2 pit toilets at entrance. It can easily fit a large RV (room for 2-4 depending on size). Campsite sits on shore of Lake 13. Usual stay 3 days.
The visitors center has a nice (interactive) display of animals of in the refuge. Very kid friendly. The ranger Chris is wonderful! Very knowledgeable and super nice!

Very disappointed. The only thing here are country roads to drive down, the main center was closed, mid summer, morning around 10:30. We drove around the one lake you could get close too. No walking paths, no one around to help, not much to see or do here....very sad!

This is, after all, a refuge for the birds - it is not a zoo. So one should not be surprised that the birds are quite far from the road and paths. We did see hundreds of sandhill cranes on Oct 19, 2017. We spoke to a couple who had camped next to Lake 13 - they caught several large rainbow trout. Remember to bring your telephoto lens!

Visited in Sept to see what birds were there. Many wading water birds in the pounds. The ranger told us to look for the burrowing owls on one of the roads. We saw several. On the way out we also saw a golden eagle. So all in all a very fine bird watching day.

I did see a large group of deer. The reservoir had some common water birds in mid-November. There were a few other people there. This is really out in the middle of nowhere. A nice place for a walk.

This is a pretty good place for bird watching. There is a prairie dog colony with Burrowing Owls, and a few Grasshopper Sparrows along one of the roads.

We wanted pictures of local wildlife and had read great reviews about Maxwell NWR. When we got there, though, it's completely fenced in with barbed wire and surrounded on all sides by pasture land How is wildlife supposed to graze through with barbed wire fences? All of the internal roads are lined with barbed wire too so there is no way to explore the area on foot. We did manage to get a decent pictures of a bald eagle and several golden eagles, but we'd planned to spend a day and only spent about an hour or so. Quite a disappointment.
