We hiked the Cat Mountain trail one day and the Thomas Mountain trail the next. The Cat trail was tougher, but much more enjoyable hike and a much better view. The Thomas trail was too man-made and boring, while the Cat red trail was more natural and challenging.

This trail from edgecomb pond parking lot was 2.4 up and down. Beautiful views up top. The hike itself is not easy. There are some vertical climbs that I would not recommend to those that are not physically active or with joint problems or injuries.
Bring lots of water and a snack with you. About 1 hour up and 1 hour down. I downloaded their map from their website to my phone which helped out.

My husband and I are not experienced hikers but do exercise on a regular basis so we are in good shape for 50. Today we hiked Thomas Mountain from Valley View Road. It is .7 up the blue trail which is well marked and an easy climb. We then hiked .7 up the yellow trail which is well marked but an assent of 509 feet. It was a good hike for us. It was challenging but doable. We really enjoyed the view.

We enjoyed the hike to Cat Mtn today. We parked at Edgecomb Pond and were delighted to take photos of fall foliage reflected in the water. We started our hike at 8 a.m. and were the only ones until we met a couple coming down just shy of the summit. We took red trail around pond, then jumped on blue trail for rest of way up. Trail is very well marked. Nothing much to oooh and aaah over on trail (one brook) but summit views are quite spectacular. Around 4+ mi RT. If we flat-lander Floridians can do it, anyone can!

These peaks can be approached singly or jointly, and the way you can approach them is variable. My husband and I recently hiked this trail, hiking first up Thomas Mountain then hiking over to Cat, and then back down. It is at least a 4-hour commitment, but I advise leaving plenty of time to take in the view at the top of Cat.
The hike up Thomas mountain is not terribly exciting, as other reviewers have commented. It is essentially straight uphill the entire way, and thus the peak can be reached relatively quickly. At the top of Thomas you can see Lake George and the Adirondacks. There is a cabin there that hikers can use on a first-come-first-served basis, with a fire pit and latrine.
From Thomas over to Cat is about 2.25 miles. This hike is much more interesting with a wide variety in terrain from walking thru fields of pine trees to a lot of up and down and rock scrambling. There aren't too many views during this part of the hike, but there is one lookout that the trail will direct you to.
Cat Mountain provides gorgeous sweeping views of Lake George and the Adirondacks. Bring a lunch and water and sit and take it in. You won't want to come down.
(Note: There are two other ways to get to Cat Mountain, one from the trailhead parking lot and also a much steeper trail (marked by red blazes). We hiked down the trail directly to the parking lot, which was fine, but I cannot comment about the steep trail.)

We hiked up Thomas mountain with our 3 kids age 5, 8 and 11. The 5 year old had a little bit of difficulty with loose rocks on an incline but it wasn't terrible. The hike up the mountain is a loose gravel path and is fairly boring but the views from the top are stunning and worth the hike up. We did not have a lot of trouble with bugs but we were generous with bug spray before we started.

My husband and I climbed Thomas Mountain in October (taking the easy trail). The views at the end are amazing! However, we found that most of the hike is in the woods where you don't really have any views on the lake or mountains and it is pretty much uphill all the way (so downhill all the way on the way back), which is not extremely rewarding. The next day we went to Up Yonda farm and took a very easy hike where in just 10 minutes you get amazing views - so much easier and so much more rewarding!

As others have said there are two options for getting tp the top of Thomas mountain which us where I stopped. You can then go on to Cat if you choose. I used the more challenging blue Two Brothers trail. It was quite rough terrain. Lots of rocks to climb over. I chose to take this trail up and down as there are less bugs once your in the trees. I took the gravel trail last year and the bugs are relentless. USE bug spray no matter what trail you choose. You'll thank me later! The views at the top are awesome and I live a challenging trail and it was perfect. There is also a Geocache on the blue trail:-)

My friend and I climbed Thomas Mountain. There are two paths, one is a mostly wide and gentle path that takes you to the summit and back. There is also the "two brothers" trail that takes you to another summit on Thomas, this trail is more challenging (think moderate with more strenuous points). We took the Two Brothers trail up and the easy trail down. It was a challenging hike up, a bit buggy, but the views were worth it. Definitely bring your own water, TP and bug spray. Trails were marked very well.

This is a preserve in the Lake George basin. You will find a nice parking area off Valley View Road. There are two separate hills, connected by 2 trails. An old carriage trail leads south to a clearing where you may turn right for one mountain, or continue straight ahead for the other. There is also a trail from one peak to the other. This is a very nice, relatively short hike for a morning or afternoon excursion in the Lake George Basin. Trail is steep in sections but if you use the carriage trails, it is wide and flat- you will not be tripping over roots and rocks as is so often the case in the Adirondacks. The trail which connects the two hills is rougher. Views from the the top are outstanding. There is a nice, but primitive cabin at the top of the first hill which is available for overnight stays.
