Trail Series, Part 29
Recommended to us by @xjoey74 (Henry’s Take Senior Field Correspondent), the “Cold Spring Harbor Trail” can be found on Long Island (about an hour outside of Manhattan). While that location may seem a little remote for some travelers, we found the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to be incredibly convenient out of Penn Station in Manhattan.
This is an out and back trail covering approximately 2 1/4 miles and features a rolling terrain that earns its reputation as being moderate in difficulty. While accomplished mountain bikers might be able to navigate its challenges, this trail is best enjoyed by hikers and runners. We’d recommend that those with mobility issues set their sights on a different adventure.
The thick canopy of trees provides outstanding shade throughout and a variety of birds provide a cacophony of sounds to serenade you during your journey.
There is additional wildlife to enjoy in the form of (seemingly) floating worms descending upon their silk threads to hunt 😳 (uh, I mean greet) you. Also (and we couldn’t be certain because the photo was a little blurry), but we may have just captured the most recent sighting of big foot! 👣
You should be sure to inspect yourself (and those in your group) for ticks at the conclusion of your adventure to ensure that you aren’t packing them out with you as souvenirs (fact).
BTW. Does anyone out there know if Sophie said yes to her prom invite? 🤷♂️
And that’s…Henry’s Take.

Best and most exhilarating hike with my dog and husband. We also met some great and friendly people along the way! Highly recommend.

Cannot believe the 4 and 5 star reviews. The trails are jam packed with hundreds of people at all hours of the day starting at sunrise. The amount of people having loud conversations on speakerphone is mind boggling. The parking lot is a dustbowl on a nasty curve and it's anarchy trying to get a parking spot. Accidents on 25A at both entrances are daily. Horn blowing and cursing at people slow to leave or move is commonplace. The general attitude of people that frequent this park is lacking at best. Good luck!

We saw the steep, seemingly-endless stairs at the entrance and immediately turned around. My dog is old and her knees would not have held up...

Although this is a relatively short hike, it is very challenging and poses a great cardio work-out. be sure to wear hiking shoes, as the terrain can be steep and difficult in some areas; also muddy after the rain. Beautiful views of the harbor can be seen from the top. Many families as well as dogs enjoy this hiking course.

About 1.1 miles (1.8 km) from parking lot to road. Beautiful trail even in winter when the trees are bare. Trail goes up and down at time quit steep, yet it is not too challenging. Not accessible to strollers. Trail continues further after the road a bit more but be ware as the road can be busy and cars come around a blind spot.

Rather short, (little over a mile) hilly trail in Cold Spring. Parking is right off Harbor road..look for the signs. Dirt parking lot is often crowded. Not sure if you're allowed to park at the library although the State Park trail map indicates parking and restrooms there. The trails are well traveled with wide paths. Lots of tree roots and groomed wood steps. We did see lots of small children walking this, strollers are a no. We saw lots of people who ran it making this short trail a good quick work out. We walked to the end and continued across rte 108 into Trail View State Park which was a little less hilly and a lot less crowded. I liked this part better. Both trails were very wooded, not too much to see as far as views. Winter may be different in Cold Spring Park where you may see the water on it's highest hills. My huge pet peeve was the dog poop, in bags that were left all over the park. This is why dogs aren't allowed in many state parks. Its not the dogs...it's the owners. PICK UP AFTER YOUR ANIMALS PEOPLE! AND TAKE IT WITH YOU!!

For what was supposed to be a biologic preserve, the park is now so crowded that the trails have been worn bare. the parking is limited. There should be a rest room in the parking lot, but there is not. Go early because the trails get crowded. The trails are well marked and numbered thanks to the volunteers , so that when people get injured they can at least be located and extracted.
Thanks to the CSHFD who do a great job helping those in need.

Lived on island 50+ yrs, never knew this was so close. We have done Bear Mountain, Breakneck Ridge, Shenandoah, this trail is similar to those. Full trail out and back, 5.7 miles, 81 floors according to phone. There is some elevation changes. No real scenery. Very shaded in summer.
The one issue : needs trail maintenance. Some of the steps are rotted or worn away, and the steel spikes are protruding and a possible hazard.
I hear if you continue past end at Stillwell lane, it continues to Stillwell Park preserve, an easy hike.
We have been going every weekend now for a few weeks- great 3 hour workout.

The park contains a hilly and wooded trail that rises up from cold Spring Harbor it is very well utilized so it’s not necessarily a place for solitude and there are limited views at least in the summer. It is s bit strenuous but all and all a really nice place to get some outdoor exercise

Hi, does this trail end at Bethpage? If so where does it link to and where exactly does it end? I noticed today after my two years total it suffers from erosion and roots.

It does link from cold Spring Harbor to Bethpage. Via syosset. From Bethpage you have to travel along a road and you can link to a paved path that will go down to massapequa.
