This part of the Minnewaska State Park has 2 easy trails. Not so tiring for beginners. The views are awesome. Worth the trip. Parking is only $10 but should come early (before noon). Parking becomes full in the afternoon.

This is one of the best parks in upstate NY. There are plenty of stand out sights like the ice caves, Mountain View’s and the waterfall. However it is the variety of terrain and trails that make this place so special. If you are getting there early consider taking the red train counter clockwise. Fewer climbs in the way and you save the waterfall for the hike out.

we hit this place by chance when our GPS led us here instead of minnewaska lake area, but in the end it was great as there is some construction going on there now and this was not crowded and has amazing views from sams point, you can continue on a loop trail around the lake there which is not strenuous at all. 1.5 hour walk all together.

We did the Sams point lookout with my two children ages 8+10. It was about an hour total -up and back (.6 mile), and manageable for that age. Would recommend for a great outdoor activity!

Such a fun and multi-faceted hike. We did the ice caves and also the falls (though it was August and the water was very light).
The ice caves are just a lot of fun. Never seen caves like these. we were thrilled to travel throughout the park.
It was wonderful and I'd go back in a minute.

We went here the last weekend in October. The weather was supposed to be meh but it turned out quite nice and Sam's Point was pretty crowded. The park opens at 9, but you need to get here not much later than 9:45 a.m. or you will not get a parking space ($10), and they don't allow shoulder parking on the access road. Trailhead has three toilets and there is always a line. There is a water bottle fill station and a visitor's center that offers a pretty useless map. It's okay because the trails are well marked.
The morning started out cold but warmed up. Dress in layers and bring a hat and sunglasses because the trail to Verkeerder Kill Falls is along an exposed ridgeline and you'll get lots of sun along with great views of the valley. We did Sam's Point and the Verkeerder Kill Falls trail (in and out-did not do Ice Caves or High Point). It took us about 4 hours round trip, including a rest and a snack at the falls. We are kind of slow. This is a carry-in-carry-out park. There are no restroom facilities once you get on the trails. The park closes at 6.
The Verkeerder Kill Falls trail has nice variety; there are some very rocky sections but you also walk through an oak grove and the view at the falls themselves is wonderful. I brought poles and found them helpful. Hiking boots (not sneakers) are a must because of the rocks. In late Oct. we had no problem with bugs. It's about 600 ft. elevation variatons to the falls and back up again. The walk up to Sam's Point itself is a paved access road and it's kind of boring. The fun starts when you get on the Verkeerder Kill Falls trail.

We had a group of friends headed out to spend an afternoon hiking. I had zeroed in on Minnewaska State Park and thought that the Sam's Point Area held a lot of promise. I was a bit concerned about the repeated warnings about a lack of parking, but on a Thursday in September it seemed worth the chance. The lot isn't huge, but there was plenty of parking when we arrived. You pay the $10/car fee at a station outside the visitor center and place the ticket on your dash.
Originally, I had planned to take the hike to Verkeerder Kill Falls, but the Ranger in the visitor center helpfully pointed out that the falls were barely flowing after the long stretch of no rain. She suggested that we hike the loop around Lake Maratanza (one of the park's "Sky Lakes", and do the Ice Caves Loop. What a fantastic suggestion it was. The Ice Caves trail is not an easy one, lots of steps up and down, some tight spots, and a couple ladders...but it was spectacular. The rest of the hike; the Sam's Point Overlook, the sky lake, the Huckleberry Pickers shacks was top notch. As a geologist, I was looking for the glacial features but couldn't pick out much. I'd hoped to get back to the visitors center before it closed, but we were enjoying the hike to much!
Overall, I think our hike was ~4.5 miles, a good amount for an afternoon hike. The visitor center is quite nice and the bathrooms and water fountains were clean and looked new. HIGHLY recommend you visit if you are in the area.

Participated in a hands-on mushroom workshop here. Park staff who taught the workshop was knowledge, enthusiastic, and patient! The preserve offers unparalleled views, for all levels of hikers and those just wanting a walk in the woods.
Bonus points for the surrounding area, including Cragsmoor Library.

We hike July 4, started the ice cave loop which was amazing, short and cool inside, a good start before doing the 8.5 miles loop of Veerkerd kill falls.
Than we walked the Aqua signs to reach the beautiful waterfall , than left to to the Red signs to climb the Ridge , climbing in ricks was amazing, than reaching High point left again following Blue signs back on open road back about 3 miles.
Take lot of water it’s all in the open.
Use tick repellent cause they have Lyme Tick. I found one on me and if you go with a dog after the Hike search yourself and your dog For Ticks.
Don’t forget sun lotion and a Hat

We went to Sams point over the COVID summer- great views! Limited parking in the weekends, arrive early before they close the lot. There is the Yellow/Red hiking trail maybe 15 min away. Kelder Farm. Horseback riding and vineyards have outside tastings- we went to Christopher Jacobs vineyard.

I know the visitors center opens at 9:00, but I want to know if you can park there earlier. I’d like to start my hike up to the falls early morning before it gets too hot. Can you only get into the lot when they are charging the fee?

I've been to the caves a few times, but never this late in the season. I see you went around this time last year. Were the ice caves icy when you went?

Not too bad this time a year. Some days a little slippery but not thick ice yet
Is there a fee for the ice caves?

Are the falls open this year as they were closed off last year to let the regrowth from the fire progress?

For us (two adults, 30+, activity level at 2+ miles of walking daily) it was maybe 30-40 minutes to the Ice Caves after first going by Sam's Point (which you'll probably want to do first anyway.) The Ice Cave route itself took at least 2 hours - the path was fairly narrow, rocky and slippery at parts. So you'll want to factor that in as well.
I live in midtown is there a bus service that takes me out to the hiking site since I don't drive?

Are the caves open currently and is this an ok hike to do now in the late winter?
