I brought a group of 94 traveling senior citizens here and they loved the venue. There is a lot to see so plan time accordingly and be sure to include the planetarium show!

I’m not that big of an aviation fan, so I found this museum kind of boring, but it has so much history about planes and tons of models. Some of which you can go inside! There are many interactive parts of the museum and the museum is great for all ages. Overall, I highly recommend for aviation and plane lovers.

My key reason for visiting the museum was to see the Lunar Exploration Module that they have on display but there was so much else about the history of the development of manned flight from the first balloon flights, through the rapid advances in powered flight at the beginning of the twentieth century, to the present day and the development of drone flights.
The volunteer guides were really engaging and we were fortunate enough to have the benefit of a guide who had actually worked on the Apollo program.
I have had an interest in aviation all my life and was 20 years old when Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon. I found it a really enthralling exhibition to visit.
It's really straightforward to visit if you are staying in New York - you just take the LIRR Babylon Branch train from Penn Station to Freeport and then catch the N43 bus towards Roosevelt Field, getting off at the Student Union/ NCC bus stop. Then it's just a 400yd walk to the museum. The return bus stop is on the Opposite side of the road to the arrival stop and the elapsed journey time was just under 1.5 hours (on a Sunday ) . The Nassau County buses accept Metrocard but not OMNY credit card payments. A single journey is $2.75 cash or you can buy the tickets with an App on your phone.
Don't be put off by the distance this museum is from Manhattan. If you are interested in the history of aviation and space travel then it's worth the journey.
It was the highlight of my visit to New York

As a huge aviation buff, I've been to a lot of air museums. This one is perfectly fine, but I'll admit leaving a bit disappointed. The only reason I went was for the Pan Am exhibit. I'm a regular listener of the Pan Am Podcast, and they're always promoting and talking up this museum. Because of that, I expected so much more on the historic airline. The Pan Am section occupies the 3rd floor, which is more akin to a mezzanine. There are some nice artifacts and displays explaining various aspects of Pan Am. They were good, but my expectations were clearly skewed. I thought much more of the museum would be dedicated to Pan Am, so in the end that affected my enjoyment of everything else.

A visit to the Cradle of Aviation Museum is very worthwhile for those interested in the history of aviation on Long Island, New York. I particularly enjoyed the comprehensive exhibit on the history of Pan Am located on the top floor of the exhibit. I do not recommend eating at the cafeteria. The exhibit map should be improved.

For anyone interested in aviation this is an excellent half day excursion out of New York City. I was visiting NYC for work and had the weekend free. I got the train from Penn Station to Carle Place and it was short Uber ride.
It was well worth the visit with the rich history of aviation in Long Island on display - from the exploits of an early female aviatrix - Harriet Quimby - to an original example of the Lunar Excursion Module - built nearby. There was something from every era of aviation - its a very special collection.
I am normally most interested in modern aircraft, but the display of the stripped down Curtiss Jenny was one of the best presentations of a pre-war aircraft that I have seen anywhere in the world. But the selection of spacecraft and especially the LEM was also very special.
The museum also has some unique protoypes, from a pre-production Tomcat to an A-6F Intruder and a Burt Rutan design for a USAF trainer. There are things hung from the ceiling (including a hypersonic test vehicle that is easy to overlook) and cockpits to sit in (open to both young and old) - including the Gemini spacecraft. The staff are also really keen to share their knowledge and experience.
The other pleasant surprise was the imax cinema 'planetarium' experience. My return trains meant that I had time to watch the 'Mars Landing' film - it was much better than I expected - definitely worthwhile doing.
If you love aviation - this is a real gem that is very much worth surpporting by visiting if you have the chance.

Its dome theater is a new experience for me. The exhibits are eye-openers. New York’s Long Island - Mineola, Hempstead, Belmont - and Queens - Astoria, Long Island City, College Point - were hubs for aviation.

Two grandparents and grandchildren.
We tracked the history of flight from the time of the Wright Brothers through the space shuttle. The planetarium show went further forward - to a landing on Mars
Plenty of hands on activities. Flying drones on simulators, landing on an aircraft carrier, wind teaching the principles of flight, and sitting in space capsules, and on and on.
Enjoyable and educational

What's the most practical way to travel to the museum from Manhattan please? (i.e. not too expensive!)
Thanks.

You can take public transportation: walk to Penn Station ( @34th street and 7th Ave), descend the stairs to take the Long Island Railroad to the Garden City Station, (cost approximately $15 per person one way) then take a taxi or Uber to the museum.
Does this IMAX theater still show select blockbuster movies such as star wars etc?.
It used to, but now seems to only list "made for imax" things like "journey under the sea" or "history in the skies"...
This is pretty lame😒

Cradle of Aviation Museum, planetarium and Dome Theater are open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5 PM. You might also be interested in the American Airpower Museum which has a collection of World War II aircraft among it's exhibits. It's located in Farmingdale at Republic Airport. A new Museum of American Armor has opened at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration in Old Bethpage. You can cover both the Museum and Village in one day. Enjoy
