This is an excellent museum that traces the history of aviation on Long Island.
You will see all sorts of planes and space craft that had its origins on Long Island.
Great displays and interesting information is presented in a very easy to understand manner. Plan to spend a few hours here. It's well worth the time.

We anticipated a self-guided tour of a small, local aviation museum. What we found instead was a personally guided tour of an impressive collection of aviation artifacts. Steve greeted us in the first exhibit and, at our request, guided us through the entire museum. He was incredibly knowledgeable and an engaging storyteller. Even the less air museum inclined in our party thoroughly enjoyed the tour. If you’re on Long Island this is absolutely worth a stop.

Doggone nice place to come and visit if you like aviation history. There's a space wing, there's also a progressing history of aircraft with heavy emphasis on Grumman as Grumman built their aircraft close by. You can also sit inside an A-6 cockpit and look inside a F-14 cockpit, a 707 and more. Very nice place, I just wish I had more time to visit and take better photos.
Finally I also recommend buying tickets online. Much easier experience that way.

Spent a rainy lunchtime here. Good on history of aviation and Long Island companies role in advancing design and manufacture of aircraft. They had some decent pain stakingly restored examples of historic airplanes. It was a good way to spend an hour or two.

Smithsonian quality museum on Long Island
You and your family must go.
The History of aviation is presented with wonderful exhibits that are inviting, informing and entertaining. I couldn't believe how many incredible aircraft they had on display, from the earliest models of The Wright Bros to an incredible exhibit of 2 actual lunar modules. The displays of WWI, WWII and commercial models and the 50 ' enlargement photo of A clipper landing on the harbor in Port Washington are some of the other highlights. Honestly, I could keep going on but in closing let me add that there are hands on exhibits for the kids. unfortunately, because of covid those were unavailable. Hopefully that will change soon
Lastly, the volunteer docents are extremely knowledgeable and will make the visit even more worthwhile. Try to connect with one when you go. Ed took me around. He was terrific.

This is a museum that adults and children can enjoy. The Planetarium shows are geared for different ages.
They have family nights with films and crafts. There is show much to do in this beautiful place.

Exceeded expectations. I decided to stop in on New Years Day, since I had stayed nearby and the museum was open. I was pleasantly surprised at how much they had in the relatively small place (compared with some other aviation museums I have been to). The exhibitions were very well done and it was impressive to see how involved Long Island has been in the history of aviation. It also happened that they had an exhibition of the Long Island Garden Railroad in the main lobby, which was pretty impressive. The museum has exhibitions, reproductions and restored aircraft ranging from the balloon days of the turn of the century through to space exploration. Admission was $16 for adults. They also have a theater, but I did not attend any showings during my visit. Parking was free. They have a cafe onsite but I did not try it, so can’t comment on the food.

Prepare to spend all day here, especially if you want to catch all the blink-and-you'll-miss-them artefacts and details: a plaque that went to the moon and back on Apollo 11, the only remaining piece of the Apollo 13 Lunar Module, a life-size replica of Sputnik donated by the Soviet Union itself, and so much more. If you can, have a docent show you around the exhibit area - every one we encountered was passionate and knowledgeable, and shared many fun and interesting stories we would never have learned otherwise.
Each area of the exhibit has interactive and hands-on activities that would pique the interest of any child (or any adult interested in feeling how cramped an Apollo command module is!) but also more than enough historical detail to ensure anyone of any age would learn something new everywhere you turn. We are a family of four, all adults, and we spent all day reading everything we could, while several groups of children celebrating birthdays ran around in awe of the massive planes and even a real lunar module that was scheduled to be used in the Apollo 19 mission!
We entered this museum thinking it would be a small, quaint aviation museum, and were blown away by everything they have to offer. Don't miss it! You won't regret visiting.

Great place to visit on a weekend. Alot of planes and local aviation history. Most original but some a replicas. Located on museum row. It would take about 4 hours to see everything and the short film in the planetarium.

It’s a charitable event. That being said it’s only good for very young children. Couples or teenagers will not find it worth the time

What's the most practical way to travel to the museum from Manhattan please? (i.e. not too expensive!)
Thanks.

You can take public transportation: walk to Penn Station ( @34th street and 7th Ave), descend the stairs to take the Long Island Railroad to the Garden City Station, (cost approximately $15 per person one way) then take a taxi or Uber to the museum.
Does this IMAX theater still show select blockbuster movies such as star wars etc?.
It used to, but now seems to only list "made for imax" things like "journey under the sea" or "history in the skies"...
This is pretty lame😒

Cradle of Aviation Museum, planetarium and Dome Theater are open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM to 5 PM. You might also be interested in the American Airpower Museum which has a collection of World War II aircraft among it's exhibits. It's located in Farmingdale at Republic Airport. A new Museum of American Armor has opened at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration in Old Bethpage. You can cover both the Museum and Village in one day. Enjoy
