What I like about this museum is that it is so welcoming to fellow fire fighters. The guys that man the museum are retired Kingston NY fire fighters and have a lot of good stories to tell.
They have all sorts of interesting equipment including vintage trucks and show pieces that were used at the turn of the last century. Upstairs there is a complete office and a living quarters with a fireplace that was decorated for Christmas.
During the open house they had for the Kingston Snowflake Festival, the whole place was decorated for Christmas. It was an interesting tour.

One man curated the Kingston Volunteer Fireman's museum. And he loves to share his finds and his knowledge with people.
The museum is open to the public, with donations accepted but not mandatory. I got the feeling that the leader just loved everything associated with firefighting, and made it his life's passion to share that love. He has sought out local and state records and archives to learn as much as he can about the Kingston volunteer fire company. Although some tiems are old, yellowed, and hard to read, the overall impact is to give you a sense of the dedication of these volunteer organizations from an earlier era. And, although he sensibly asks people not to sit on the furniture or touch most artifacts, he does allow kids and families to sit in the old firetruck, a good photo op and great excitement for the young (and not so young).
You can spend an hour or more just absorbing the history here -- an hour well spent.

The building itself, authentic, maintained and staff by volunteers is worth a visit - but the collection, the collection is noteworthy as well. Mission furniture in the meeting room is easily over a hundred years old, records of service, awards, sleeping quarters intact, the pole still in place - it's as if the firefighters of 1900 just left the building to answer a call and will be back in a few minutes. One of the few intact firehouse museums anywhere.

I highly recommend a visit to the Volunteer Firemen's Museum in Kingston. I know nothing about firefighting and probably wouldn't have ventured in---except a kind, welcoming volunteer saw us taking pictures of the old firehouse and encouraged us to come for a tour---even though they were busy decorating the trucks and the firehouse for Halloween. They have a collection of great old engines, and I learned so much about pumps, call boxes, and how the old system used to work. For anyone interested in local history, the Volunteer Firemen's Museum is a gold mine. Many old portraits of local firemen grace the walls of the upstairs meeting room. Best were the stories about how local artifacts found their way back into the collection. The guide's passion for his subject---and the objects---was infectious. Thank you so much, Mark, for a fun learning experience!

I have to say that I have been to many Firemen's Museums but this one is very impressive. The old trucks, the antique equipment and decorations and especially the the parade vehicle are in great shape and I have never seen this type of equipment before and in great condition. All around the old firehouse there are old pictures, fire apparatus and decorations.
Upstairs there is more equipment, furniture and places where the firemen used to live and run the calls. The Kingston Fire Department has done a good job preserving their history and it shows with the items here. You will really understand the history of firefighting by visiting here.
Don't miss the display of parade equipment and all the antique furniture upstairs. The firemen who volunteer here are really nice and very informative.

This was a great stop in Kingston. The Museum is on a beautiful village street. There is no fee, but a donation, and "friend" sign up is encouraged. There is plenty to see and read about. I loved seeing the ancient fire grenades used to put out fires. What an ingenious idea. So many news articles and historical writings about New your firemen.

In fact, my Uncle helped run and found this museum. My aunt was the First Volunteer Woman Firefighter in Kingston's history. My dad was a volunteer fireman in his youth in the area, and when I moved upstate to the Utica area at one time, I was a volunteer fireman as well. In the past, I have contributed to this museum a number of Fire Patches (if you see the Bermuda (island) or Yorkville, NY Patch, yup, me) that I received while traveling, as well as the local department that I once Volunteered for. I recommend folks stop by the museum and enjoy its history and make a small donation to keep this very important ideal of volunteerism alive. Or, better yet, if you can, Volunteer at your local department.

Interesting collection of Ulster County fire departments and fire equipment - well documented and displayed. Also have a wall honoring deceased volunteer firefighters with their names on plaques!
