A walk through this building is a walk back in time. The staff who greeted us were enthusiastic and knowledgable about the history of the house and it's periodic restoration. There are fastinating artifacts and literature helping us understand life in the 1600's.

The stone buildings on historic four corners in Kingston are an unrivaled opportunity to step back in time (a snowstorm, a dark night, a reenactment) where you can actually picture yourself in the late 17th, early 18th century. No admission fee, largely self guided, with an amazing county owned museum building spanning four centuries on one corner, a converted academy, now books and beer on another and two privately owned but very accessible buildings on the other corners - in fact there are original stone buildings scattered within easy walking distance of the corners. Tales of native American raids and stockade walls and British soldiers burning the town down after the NYS Constitution was adopted here and the first government was elected here. The uptown section of Kingston qualifies as a living history experience and it has been open for business for well over 350 years and most of it is entirely free of admission charges. You can stay in a boutique hotel, dine in a fine restaurant and explore the history of New York's First Capital.

One of the oldest building in Kingston, it's been gutted b/c of previous damage and its underlying structure left exposed for historic interpretation. A few of the 20K archaeological artifacts are on display. Why make the building well worth a close look are the excellent interpretative posters that explain each of the house's 5 phases. Free admission. The docent when we visited was friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic.

The Four Corners (at the intersection on John and Crown Streets in Uptown Kingston) is billed as the "only intersection in the United States where 1700s stone houses stand on all our corners." The most famous of the four buildings is the Matthewis Persen House which dates to 1661. It is now a museum but is only open seasonally. Worth a quick detour if you're walking around the area.

We almost didn't go to this attraction because the reviews weren't great and we had a hard time finding info on the hours and what it was about. In the end we found it and it was open. The displays are great! Lots of interesting information to browse and good explanations of the evolution of the building. Really enjoyed such a unique approach to presenting the history of such an old building and the people who lived there.

The house has lots of bare walls and roof space. You can see the history of the place stripped back so you get a true sense of what the living space was like. There were display cases of items that were found in the house when work was being carried out. A true piece of Kingston history.

We found this to be quite interesting. We are into the architecture and the building techniques used--how they built houses 250 years ago. They also go into the restoration of the building which was almost falling down not too long ago.

Actually I was disappointed. This is a archeological site. Not much to do here. Stopped by the Senate house and Johnston home and Old Dutch Church all in the same day. Expected much more than there was.

This house is currently an archaeological dig site. There are display cases of items found so far, but no furniture and the rooms are not set up in any way. You can see what is believed to be 2 different areas of burn marks from the native americans burning and then the English burning of Kingston. It is a quick visit, but interesting.

The Matthewis Person House standing alone is representative of houses of a particular period. That it survived the British burning of Kingston adds to its value. The exposed walls and ceilings illuminate the building techniques of a simpler time. The collected artifacts in the first floor display are alone worth the visit. The young man who gave us the tour was friendly and knowledgeable.
