Expert Level Hike, not for the faint of heart
2021年10月 • 夫妻情侣
This is by NO means a “moderate hike.” It took more than 3 hours of grueling uphill climb to reach the top, many section at more than a 45 degree angle straight up, having to latch onto small trees as the only way to pull yourself up. The entire hike “trail” is covered in sharp rocks that you have to balance on as you ascend, some spots it seems that it really is not even a trail but rather you are just crawling up needing to use your hands to grab on in some steep sections as well. The view is amazing and if you are able to survive this Mt. Everest esque so called “moderate hike” you can really be proud of yourself. The way down gets no better, as it is so steep you are basically slipping and sliding the whole way down grabbing onto any tree or often having to slide down some steep sections on your behind to prevent yourself from barreling down the mountain. Unless your are an Olympic gold medalist athlete, expertly trained hiker, with a full array of hiking shoes and other equipment, save your body the grueling agony of this hike and go take a leisurely walk around the Lake George village instead. I hope I can save someone from the experience my girlfriend and I had here.

The View from the Summit
2021年6月
We ascended Buck Mountain from the Shelving Rock Road trail head. The summit is 2.5 miles from the parking lot. We arrived at 7:30am on a Saturday and 4 of the 8 parking spots were taken. It took us about 4 hours total to complete the hike, including a 20-minute snack and rest break at the summit.

I am by no means an athlete. I am 38, about 20 lbs overweight, but I go to the gym 3 times a week and take 3-mile walks with my dogs all the time. I found this hike to be moderate difficulty. My super physically fit husband agrees that it is a moderate to intermediate hike, and not good for beginners.

Most of the hike is through the forest, so it is nice and shady. We crossed at least 5 streams – all with steppingstones so your feet don’t get wet. There are parts that are muddy and parts that are quite steep. We wore our high-top hiking boots and brought our trekking poles and daypacks loaded with water, first aid kit, and snacks. The trekking poles were a lifesaver for me! I would have struggled much more up the steep parts of the trail without them. There were also some slippery parts of the trail. My husband and I slipped and fell once each while walking on the wet boulders that are part of the trail. I would have fallen more often without my poles. I haven’t seen my husband fall on a hike in the 16 years we’ve been together!

For bug control, we did a natural spray on our faces and arms and deep woods Off on our shoes and clothing. No ticks were found at the end of the hike and all the other bugs were repelled until the end of the hike, when we had sweated our bug spray off.

Our 2 young border collies did fine on the hike. They had a blast! They were absolutely exhausted the whole rest of the day. However, if your dog is not good off the leash, I don’t recommend this hike. Your leashed dog could pull you right off some parts of the trail, especially on the slippery boulders.

The foliage and scenery were absolutely stunning! This was a truly beautiful trail. No bears or deer were spotted, but I did see toads and chipmunks. The air was fresh, and the birds were singing. Just wait until you see the view from the summit! It’s a jaw-dropper.

Fun and rewarding hike!

My husband and I were in Lake George for a mini honeymoon during COVID, and decided to tackle Buck Mountain. We started on Monday in September at around 10 am and were pleasantly surprised that we barely saw any other people for the whole hike! There are two different routes up the mountain, and we opted for the route starting from Shelving Rock Road, which was 2.5 miles to the summit and then you go back down. The designated parking area was very small (maybe 4 cars) so get there early. We found it by entering “Shelving Rock Rd to Buck Mountain Trail” in Google Maps and downloading an offline map as there is no service as you go down the dirt road. The trail is well marked and easy for the first half, to the point that we weren’t sure we were on the correct trail since we had read this was a moderately tough hike! After crossing the “stream” (in quotes bc it was basically dried up when we went in Sept), the trail definitely gets more steep and rocky and I was happy to have my hiking boots for traction (one middle-aged woman I saw with sneakers was struggling a bit). The second half was a steady incline up to the top and we worked up a sweat. We are a relatively fit couple in early 30s who like an occasional day hike when traveling, but are definitely not experienced avid hikers and I would say the trail is moderate (we had great weather in 60s and sunny, definitely could see this being more difficult in high heat or with precipitation or more slippery conditions). It took us exactly 1 hr 20 min to go to the summit, spent about 20 min on summit to enjoy the view, have a granola bar and rest, and then 1 hr and 10 min back to the car. We then went on to drive to Shelving Rock falls and Shelving rock mountain trails further down the road before heading back into town which made for a delightful day of hiking!

Gorgeous views, worth the climb!
2020年9月
This is a moderately tough hike, there are some locations where it is quite steep and not easy without a hiking pole or shoes. I would recommend bringing snacks, lunch and water for the views up to. You can hang out at the summit, there are plenty of spaces on the rocks to eat lunch and take in the views. We had a little one with us so the total hike up and down took us about 4.5 hours. There are loads of small pebbles and rocks, not the best for a hike in the rain or if it's too wet. Be careful and enjoy your hike!

Nice moderate Hike
2020年8月
The day we were there there were a couple of muddy spots but easy to navigate. Also, a little challenging crossing a stream over rocks but at ages 67 and 70 we did fine. Nice shade, fun hike.

Buck Mtn with a side of rain.
2020年6月
My wife and I 50'ish years old in relatively good shape, I play rec league hockey my wife regularly works out we both walk about 3 miles a day. I have to say this trail is a bit more difficult than moderate. The top is very steep. We had some bad luck with rain right when we got to the summit, which made things fairly slippery. The decent was very difficult, we both took a few slip and falls, nothing serious but could have been worse, we consider ourselves lucky. The rock faces looked more slippery than they were and were actually less slippery that the dirt/mud leaf covered areas for foot placement. Do not go up without some food and water. That was the tough part of the review. The good part is it was incredibly beautiful all the way up, the view of the top even with rolling rain clouds was spectacular, the picture don't due it justice. Thoroughly exhausted by the end. But happy we braved the rain at the top. A great feeling. Did I say bring bug spray, bring bug spray. Also, bring bug spray. The full trip took 5 hours round trip. I highly recommend poles or find the readily available walking sticks along the way, you may feel like you don't need them on the way up but they are a life saver on the way down especially when the trail is wet.

Buck mountain Hiking from Shelving Rock Road.
2019年8月 • 夫妻情侣
Hike preparation: hiking/tracking poles, water, good hiking shoes, energy bar, light snacks, trail map, download offline maps of the area, camera/phone..all basic stuffs

Hike type-Moderate

Distance: almost 5.5miles round trip

Experience: It's really necessary to Download offline maps inorder to reach parking area of Buck mountain summit from Shelving Rock Road as network is really weak. Last few miles of this road is Rocky and bumpy so don't get confused. On the way you get parking area for"Hogtown trailhead To sleeping beauty" from where take left(don't stop here , this is not parking area for Buck mountain summit) and drive for 0.5miles ahead and on your left side you can see small parking lot for Buck mountain summit(mentioned clearly but in a small note, so please observe it). Around 10 cars can be parked here at Max. So be prepared to reach bit early.
Hike is moderate and marking is very clear.
Our day started with having light breakfast (as we are breakfast ppl and our day doesn't start without it) and we reached spot around 8.45. we took our hiking bag and started our hike at 9am. When we started from parking lot ours was the only car there. Beginning of the hike is easy for 30 mins. Then path gets little steep here and there but manageable. It was a foggy day (August Mid)and sun light barely entered the forest, we really started worrying about the summit view.path started getting Rocky and steepy but it is manageable. We took small breaks around 3-4 times(Max 5mins) took some pics/videos on the way.We kept on looking at distance covered (using Apps) as we did not know how much more we need to hike. Finally we could see lil sun light entering n forest started opening up (on the way it was kind of foggy and was kind of covered), so we knew we were almost near the summit. When we reached the summit there was so much happiness but it ended immediately when we couldn't see any views due to fog. However Within few mins slowly fogs started to go away and view became clear. That view made our day. We had almost taken 90 mins to reach top. We spent almost an hour or so on summit..and started our journey back. Descending was very easy (except for first 15 mins) we took exactly 1 hour and we didn't take any break.
Overall if you are experienced in hiking then this hike is not very difficult.I will not suggest if you are beginner unless you have stamina or confidence.
Marking is very very clear both the ways. So no way to get miss.Dogs are allowed. Bug spray is must.enjoy your hike.

We Didn't Make It To The Top
2019年7月 • 夫妻情侣
I don't know who decides what "moderate" is, but I don't know if we agree with that classification for this hike. We parked, got our hiking sticks and began our ascent. About 45 minutes in we were polling those coming down and they told us we were maybe a third of the way up and that it would become really steep at the end. We had already experienced some points where we felt it was really steep. It was Summer so it was too hot and we did not prepare well in terms of bringing sufficient hydration. Another thirty minutes in and other hikers all told magnificent stories of the view from the summit, but also provided the sad news that we were only about half way there and that it would get "really steep" towards the end. We surrendered and vowed to come back in the Autumn and attempt this with more moderate temperatures. Be prepared for a HIKE!
