If you are near Sedona or Flagstaff, the drive is worth the time. We came northbound from Phoenix, and stopped first at the ranger station visitors center. The views there are great and good for pictures. We stopped in the late afternoon, and the rocks were even more red in the setting sun. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is another good view for pictures. Advice-go to top of hill at the chapel. There is a ramp up to the chapel.

This is a must do if you are in the Sedona area. The drive is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever done. If you get a chance, drive it both ways as the views are so different. There are viewpoints along the way and worth a stop. Nature at its most impressive!

Loved Sedona. (Also -very vegetarian/vegan/gluten free friendly. But also friendly to meat eaters. See recommendations below)
Totally amazing. The town itself is crowded, but plenty of places to go that are peaceful. Recommend:1) Verde Valley Railroad train ride in Clarkdale ( 20 min from Sedona). It’s pricey but we felt fun, worthwhile and better scenery than shown in the website.
2) Red Rock Guest House on AirBnB. Perfect for a couple or two adults okay with one ( king size) bed. Good value, many amenities. Bathroom ( and shower) are small, but space is well utilized. The host, Judith, is very nice.
3) restaurants: Wildflower,an upscale Panera’s is very good; Picazzo’s- excellent pizza ( and more) indoor and outdoor dining (great margaritas), Open Range: full wall windows to red rocks. A bit pricey I would say limited menu. But I just got an appetizer and my husband a hot dog and they were fine with it. Great margaritas
4) Jordan Homestead museum. ( Not the exact name. ) $10 pp. very interesting.
5) DO NOT bother with going to town of Jerome.
6) chapel of the Holy Cross is stunning.
7) definitely do Rte 179 scenic highway at least once AND stop at all scenic turnoffs.

What a great drive! The views are great and the road is fun, especially when you have no one in front of you. Not so much when those in front are scared or looking around too much. I just pulled off a couple of times to get out of those packs. Lots of twists, tight turns, steep hills and valleys to make this a blast.
There's lots of turn outs too with hiking trails are great photo ops. Highly recommend.

Well worth the drive! I drove most of the byway on my drive into Sedona from Phoenix. It's like entering another world. The scenery is other-worldly and has a number of stops for viewing and hiking. I drove sections of it a number of times on my stay in Sedona. Don't miss it!

Spectacular place is Oak Creek. Best for convince to trails and restaurants. Bell Rock Inn is perfect place to stay-reasonable and nice accommodations.

Very nice drive to view the sites around Sedona. The brush is growing up and detracts seeing some of the beautiful rock formations, but I’m assuming they are just keeping the area natural. Also, it’s frustrating how some people use a scenic drive as a cut through and want ride on your rear trying to push you above the speed limit, but it’s nice that they have places to pull off and park and take photographs. Definitely something you need to do with a couple hours of your time while in Sedona.

Sedona has really degraded. Millions of people drive on this road and up Oak Creek Canyon as a pass through detour to Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon and elsewhere. So a single lane byway through the red rocks is jam packaged with looky loos and tourists behind what the road can handle.

From Flagstaff you head south on Rt 89A. The byway starts on Rt 179 after passing through the town of Sedona. From Phoenix you take Exit 298 off I-17 and head north on Rt 179. Basically all of Rt 179 is the Scenic Byway.

Hi! My husband & I, & our 6 year old twins will be driving in from Los Angeles to Sedona on a Wednesday. And then to Scottsdale to see some family sometime on Friday for the weekend.
What is the best way to get the most out of the drive and see the best views and any landmarks? As a reference, We were thinking of taking kids fishing Rainbow Trout Farm.....and
Horseback riding with Trail Horse Adventures (only place I've seen that is open and allows kids this age).
Also, Out of Africa. Is it worth going?
Just so confused as to whats near what and how to plan all this to get the most of the few days we have and see the Red Rocks and all in between if we can on the way to fishing maybe or on the way back.
I really appreciate any suggestions from those who have been or live around the area.

I’ve never been to Sedona, so this will be our first time. Im a little confused with the lay out of some of the attractions. We’d like to stop by bell rock, then cathedral rock, then red rock scenic drive byway and lastly, Amitābha Stupa Peace Park. We are not planning to hike since we have only one full day in Sedona. I guess my question is which one should be stop first, and what happen at the end of the scenic drive? Do you make u-turn or can can you exit the drive and continue to next location?
I appreciate any feedbacks and advises.

In The center of Sedona is a Y intersection of 89A and 179. What helped us the most was a $4 placemat/mao we bought at the Coffee Pot restaurant. Its easy to read and has pictures of all the main sites. Great souvenir too!

You don't have to wait until sunset to enjoy the views, but it is very pretty around sunset. It is a tranquil drive no matter the time of day. If youre staying in the area for an overnight, and your schedule allows, drive it both early in day and sunset.

we went to M Diamond Ranch. they have horseback riding and a cookout. We did both and loved it. The horseback ride was fantastic, it takes you through a real working ranch with beautiful views. It is south of Sedona about 15 minutes.

My favorite place in Sedona is on Airport road, Sky Ranch Lodge.
drive north on I-17 Get off on route 179 exit 298 follow into downtown Sedona and turn left on 89A and follow to Airport Road on the left. Take airport road to the top of the hill and the lodge is on the right.
